    The maximization of submodular functions : old and new proofs for the correctness of the dichotomy algorithm

    The first purpose of this paper is to make an old (Russian) theoretical results about the structure of local and global maxima of submodular functions, Cherenin’s excluding rules and his Dichotomy Algorithm more accessible for Western community. The second purpose of this paper is to present our main result which can be stated as follows. For any pair of embedded subsets, the difference of their function values is a lower bound for the difference between the unknown(!) optimal values of the corresponding partition defined by these subsets. A simple justification of Cherenin’s rules, the Dichotomy Algorithmand its generalization with the new branching rules from our main result are presented. The usefulness of our new branching rules is illustrated by means of a numerical example.

    Coulomb Drag Between Parallel Ballistic Quantum Wires

    The Coulomb drag between parallel, {\it ballistic} quantum wires is studied theoretically in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field B. The transresistance R_D shows peaks as a function of the Fermi level and splitting energy between the 1D subbands of the wires. The sharpest peaks appear when the Fermi level crosses the subband extrema so that the Fermi momenta are small. Two other kinds of peaks appear when either {\it intra}- or {\it inter}-subband transitions of electrons have maximum probability; the {\it intra}-subband transitions correspond to a small splitting energy. R_D depends on the field B in a nonmonotonic fashion: it decreases with B, as a result of the suppression of backscattering, and increases sharply when the Fermi level approaches the subband bottoms and the suppression is outbalanced by the increase of the Coulomb matrix elements and of the density of states.Comment: Text 14 pages in Latex/Revtex format, 4 Postscript figures.     Negative Electron-electron Drag Between Narrow Quantum Hall Channels

    Momentum transfer due to Coulomb interaction between two parallel, two-dimensional, narrow, and spatially separated layers, when a current I_{drive} is driven through one layer, is studied in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field B. The current induced in the drag layer, I_{drag}, is evaluated self-consistently with I_{drive} as a parameter. I_{drag} can be positive or negative depending on the value of the filling factor \nu of the highest occupied bulk Landau level (LL). For a fully occupied LL, I_{drag} is negative, i.e., it flows opposite to I_{drive}, whereas it is positive for a half-filled LL. When the circuit is opened in the drag layer, a voltage \Delta V_{drag} develops in it; it is negative for a half-filled LL and positive for a fully occupied LL. This positive \Delta V_{drag}, expressing a negative Coulomb drag, results from energetically favored near-edge inter-LL transitions that occur when the highest occupied bulk LL and the LL just above it become degenerate.Comment: Text file in Latex/Revtex/preprint format, 7 separate PS figures, Physical Review B, in pres

    Metabolomic profiling can be used to study disease-induced changes in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The aim of this study was to investigate the difference in the metabolomic profile of males and females as they developed IBD. Using the IL-10 gene-deficient mouse model of IBD and wild-type mice, urine at age 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, and 20 weeks was collected and analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Multivariate data analysis was employed to assess differences in metabolomic profiles that occurred as a consequence of IBD development and severity (at week 20). These changes were contrasted to those that occurred as a consequence of gender. Our results demonstrate that both IL-10 gene-deficient and wild-type mice exhibit gender-related changes in urinary metabolomic profile over time. Some male-female separating metabolites are common to both IL-10 gene-deficient and control wild-type mice and, therefore, appear to be related predominantly to gender maturation. In addition, we were able to identify gender-separating metabolites that are unique for IL-10 gene-deficient and wild-type mice and, therefore, may be indicative of a gender-specific involvement in the development and severity of the intestinal inflammation. The comparison of the gender-separating metabolomic profile from IL-10 gene-deficient mice and wild-type mice during the development of IBD allowed us to identify changes in profile patterns that appear to be imperative in the development of intestinal inflammation, but yet central to gender-related differences in IBD development. The knowledge of metabolomic profile differences by gender and by disease severity has potential clinical implications in the design of both biomarkers of disease as well as the development of optimal therapies

    The use of multiple versions of a computer program, independently designed from a common specification, to reduce the effects of an error is discussed. If these versions are designed by independent programming teams, it is expected that a fault in one version will not have the same behavior as any fault in the other versions. Since the errors in the output of the versions are different and uncorrelated, it is possible to run the versions concurrently, cross-check their results at prespecified points, and mask errors. A DEsign DIversity eXperiments (DEDIX) testbed was implemented to study the influence of common mode errors which can result in a failure of the entire system.     Latency-aware joint virtual machine and policy consolidation for mobile edge computing

    To guarantee an efficient and high-performance environment for mobile devices to perform offloading with low end-to-end delay, it is important to ensure no network policies are violated. In this paper, we explore the simultaneous, dynamic virtual machine (VM) and policy consolidation, and formulate the Policy-VM Latency-aware Consolidation problem for Mobile Edge Computing, which is shown to be NP-Hard. We propose the PL-Edge, an efficient scheme to jointly consolidate network policies and virtual machines for mobile edge computing to reduce communication end-to-end delays among devices and virtual machines. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PL-Edge can significantly reduces policy-flows end-to-end delay by nearly 45% while adhering strictly to the requirements of network policies

    Prophylactic thyroidectomy in ethnic Chinese patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A syndrome after the introduction of genetic testing

    Objective: To evaluate the impact of genetic testing in the management of familial multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A patients. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: University teaching hospital, Hong Kong. Patients: Twenty-two patients from eight multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A families underwent prophylactic total thyroidectomy based on a positive RET mutation genetic testing. All mutations were located at codon 634 of exon 11. Nineteen patients had preoperative basal serum calcitonin measured, and the 12 with normal levels had pentagastrin stimulation tests. Preoperative thyroid ultrasound examination was performed for 17 patients. Results: There were 13 females and 9 males with a median age of 25.1 (range, 6.1-71.9) years. Histopathology revealed medullary thyroid carcinoma in 17 (77%), C-cell hyperplasia in four (18%), and normal pathology in one (5%) of the patients. Five patients with either C-cell hyperplasia or normal pathology were among the youngest (age range, 6-9 years). The youngest patient with medullary thyroid carcinoma was nearly 9 years old. The median size of medullary thyroid carcinomas was 8.3 (range, 0.1-18) mm, but there were no lymph node metastases. Of 15 patients with normal basal calcitonin levels, 10 had medullary thyroid carcinoma, though two tested negative with the pentagastrinstimulated calcitonin assay. Five of six patients with normal preoperative ultrasonographic examinations had medullary thyroid carcinoma. Three (14%) of the patients were prescribed long-term calcium and vitamin D supplementation. After a median follow-up of 49 (range, 13-128) months, no patient had recurrence of medullary thyroid carcinoma. Conclusions: Genetic testing has replaced conventional biochemical and radiological modalities to identifying multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A carriers, in order to offer them prophylactic thyroidectomy. Chinese multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A patients with codon 634 mutation seem to have less aggressive forms of medullary thyroid carcinoma, for whom prophylactic thyroidectomy can be considered at the age of 8 years.published_or_final_versio

    We study a (k,m)-threshold controlling scheme for controlled quantum teleportation. A standard polynomial coding over GF(p) with prime p > m-1 needs to distribute a d-dimensional qudit with d >= p to each controller for this purpose.     Serum fibroblast growth factor 21 is a superior biomarker to other adipokines in predicting incident diabetes

    OBJECTIVE: Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) improves glucose and lipid metabolism, but high circulating levels are found in type 2 diabetes, suggesting FGF21 resistance. Serum FGF21 predicts incident diabetes, but its performance compared to established and emerging predictors is not known. We aimed to study the performance of FGF21 in diabetes prediction, relative to other adipokines and established risk factors including 2-h plasma glucose (2hG) during the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). DESIGN/PARTICIPANTS/MEASUREMENTS: We studied 1380 nondiabetic subjects from the Hong Kong Cardiovascular Risk Factor Prevalence Study using the second visit (2000-2004) as baseline when serum levels of FGF21 and other adipokines were measured. Glycaemic status was assessed by OGTT. Incident diabetes was defined as fasting glucose level (FG) ≥ 7 mmol/l or 2hG ≥ 11·1 mmol/l or use of antidiabetic agents, at subsequent visits. RESULTS: A total of 123 participants developed diabetes over 9·0 years (median). On multivariable logistic regression analysis, FGF21 (P = 0·003), adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (P = 0·003) and adiponectin (P = 0·035) were independent predictors of incident diabetes. FGF21 had the best change in log likelihood when added to a diabetes prediction model (DP) based on age, family history, smoking, hypertension, BMI, dyslipidaemia and FG. It also improved the area under ROC curve (AUROC) of diabetes prediction (DP) from 0·797 to 0·819 (P = 0·0072), rendering its performance comparable to the 'DP + 2hG' model (AUROC=0·838, P = 0·19). CONCLUSIONS: As a biomarker for diabetes prediction, serum FGF21 appeared to be superior to other adipokines and, on its own, could be considered as an alternative to the OGTT. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.postprin
