A very efficient RCS data compression and reconstruction technique, volume 4
A very efficient compression and reconstruction scheme for RCS measurement data was developed. The compression is done by isolating the scattering mechanisms on the target and recording their individual responses in the frequency and azimuth scans, respectively. The reconstruction, which is an inverse process of the compression, is granted by the sampling theorem. Two sets of data, the corner reflectors and the F-117 fighter model, were processed and the results were shown to be convincing. The compression ratio can be as large as several hundred, depending on the target's geometry and scattering characteristics
Microstructure of the juvenile sheep aortic valve hinge region and the trilamellar sliding hypothesis.
Background: The aortic valve mechanism performs extremely sophisticated functions which depend on the microstructure of its component parts. The hinge mechanism of the aortic leaflets plays a crucial part in the overall function. However, the detailed microstructure and its relation to function has not been adequately studied. Methods: The aortic roots of juvenile sheep were fixed under physiologic pressure. Sections through all three sinuses were then performed to illustrate the microstructure of the hinge mechanism in different regions of the aortic root. Results: The hinge region in the different sinuses showed unique microstructure with a trilamellar topology with a dominant core consisting of glycosaminoglycans. The exact arrangement of the trilamellar structures varies around the aortic sinuses, which could have functional implications. These features allow the hinge to perform its complex functions through what we have described as "the trilamellar sliding hypothesis". Conclusion: The microstructure of the hinge mechanism is unique and enables it to perform it sophisticated functions
NbSe3: Effect of Uniaxial Stress on the Threshold Field and Fermiology
We have measured the effect of uniaxial stress on the threshold field ET for
the motion of the upper CDW in NbSe3. ET exhibits a critical behavior, ET ~ (1
- e/ec)^g, wher e is the strain, and ec is about 2.6% and g ~ 1.2. This
ecpression remains valid over more than two decades of ET, up to the highest
fields of about 1.5keV/m. Neither g nor ec is very sensitive to the impurity
concentraction. The CDW transition temperature Tp decreases linearly with e at
a rate dTp/de = -10K/%, and it does not show any anomaly near ec. Shubnikov
de-Haas measurements show that the extremal area of the Fermi surface decreases
with increasing strain. The results suggest that there is an intimate
relationship between pinning of the upper CDW and the Fermiology of NbSe3.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
SZ and CMB reconstruction using Generalized Morphological Component Analysis
In the last decade, the study of cosmic microwave background (CMB) data has
become one of the most powerful tools to study and understand the Universe.
More precisely, measuring the CMB power spectrum leads to the estimation of
most cosmological parameters. Nevertheless, accessing such precious physical
information requires extracting several different astrophysical components from
the data. Recovering those astrophysical sources (CMB, Sunyaev-Zel'dovich
clusters, galactic dust) thus amounts to a component separation problem which
has already led to an intense activity in the field of CMB studies. In this
paper, we introduce a new sparsity-based component separation method coined
Generalized Morphological Component Analysis (GMCA). The GMCA approach is
formulated in a Bayesian maximum a posteriori (MAP) framework. Numerical
results show that this new source recovery technique performs well compared to

Biocompatibility and application of carbon fibres in heart valve tissue engineering
The success of tissue engineered heart valves relies on a balance between polymer degradation, appropriate cell repopulation and ECM deposition, in order for the valves to continue their vital function. However, the process of remodelling is highly dynamic and species dependent. Carbon fibres have been well used in the construction industry for their high tensile strength and flexibility, and therefore might be relevant to support tissue engineered hearts valve during this transition in the mechanically demanding environment of the circulation. The aim of this study was to assess the suitability of carbon fibres to be incorporated into tissue engineered heart valves, with respect to optimising their cellular interaction and mechanical flexibility during valve opening and closure. The morphology and surface oxidation of the carbon fibres was characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Their ability to interact with human adipose derived stem cells (hADSCs) was assessed with respect to cell attachment and phenotypic changes. hADSCs attached and maintained their expression of stem cell markers with negligible differentiation to other lineages. Incorporation of carbon fibres into a stand-alone tissue engineered aortic root, comprised of jet-sprayed poly-caprolactone aligned fibres had no negative effects on the opening and closure characteristics of the valve when simulated in a pulsatile bioreactor. In conclusion, carbon fibres were found to be conducive to hADSC attachment and maintaining their phenotype. Carbon fibres were sufficiently flexible for full motion of valvular opening and closure. This study provides a proof of concept for the incorporation of carbon fibres into tissue engineered heart valves to continue their vital function during scaffold degradation
Complete genome sequence of lignin-degrading streptomyces sp. S6 isolated from oil palm plantation in Malaysia
Streptomyces spp. are bacteria that are responsible for the degradation of aromatic compounds and produce secondary metabolites. Here, we present a complete genome sequence of Streptomyces sp. strain S6, which was isolated from an oil palm plantation, with a 7.8-Mbp liner chromosome, a GC content of 72%, and 4,266 coding sequences
The Learning from the Large Scale Lotung Soil-Structure Interaction Experiments
Blind prediction analyses and subsequent correlation studies of a 1/4-scale reinforced concrete containment model constructed at Lotung, Taiwan subject to forced vibration tests and actual earthquakes are evaluated with the objective of validating soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis methodologies commonly used in U.S. practice. The SSI methods used range from simple soil-spring representation to more complex finite-element methods and sub structuring techniques. Both forced vibration test (FVT) data and actual earthquake induced response data have been obtained for use in validating selected SSI analysis methodologies. Considering that for forced vibration tests only the stiffness and damping characteristics of the foundation are required (complexities of site response, wave scattering and stiffness degradation of soils are absent), the FVT evaluation shows that acceptable frequency predictions can be obtained by most of the methods; however, soil damping as obtained from geophysical methods does not seem to account for the total energy dissipation during SSI. A number of insights have been obtained with respect to the validity of SSI analysis methodologies for earthquake response. Among these are the following: vertical wave propagation assumption in performing SSI is adequate to describe the wave field; equivalent linear analysis of soil response for SSI analysis, such as performed by the SHAKE code, provides acceptable results; a significant but non-permanent degradation of soil modulus occurs during earthquakes; the development of soil stiffness degradation and damping curves as a function of strain, based on geophysical and laboratory tests, requires improvement to reduce variability and uncertainty; backfill stiffness plays an important role in determining impedance functions and possibly input motions; scattering of ground motion due to embedment is an important element in performing SSI analysis; more than the calculational techniques, the differences in response predictions are due to the modeling of the soil-structure system
Determining the representative factors affecting warning message dissemination in VANETs
In this paper, we present a statistical analysis based on the 2k factorial methodology
to determine the representative factors affecting traffic safety applications in Vehicular
ad hoc networks (VANETs). Our purpose is to determine what are the key factors affecting
Warning Message Dissemination (WMD) in order to concentrate on such parameters,
thus reducing the amount of required simulation time when evaluating VANETs. Simulation
results show that the key factors affecting warning messages delivery are: (i) the transmission
range, (ii) the radio propagation model used, and (iii) the density of vehicles. Based on this
statistical analysis, we evaluate a compound key factor: neighbor density. This factor combines
the above-mentioned factors into a single entity, reducing the number of factors that
