Novel pyrrolizidine alkaloid
The present invention involves a purified bioactive compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are H or an acyl having less than about five carbon atoms. More specifically the preferred purified bioactive compound is (1R, 1R, 3R, 7S, 7aR)-3-hydroxymethyl-1,2,7-trihydroxypyrrolizidine.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste
Sinusoidal-gust generation with a pitching and plunging airfoil
The generation of uniform, periodic gust disturbances in an experimental
context is demonstrated using a single oscillating airfoil. A pitching and
heaving symmetric airfoil is suggested as a simpler alternative to existing
gust-generation methods. The Theodorsen theory of unsteady aerodynamics is used
as an analytical tool to dictate the kinematics necessary to produce
well-defined sinusoidal gusts downstream of the airfoil. These analytic
predictions improve the symmetry of fluctuations in the vertical velocity
induced by the airfoil, as well as minimize the influence of vorticity shed by
the oscillating airfoil. The apparatus is shown to produce smooth, repeatable
gusts with high amplitudes and reduced frequencies compared to other
gust-generation mechanisms in the literature. Furthermore, the control of
downstream flow properties by airfoil motion kinematics has applications in
experimental aerodynamics, the design of rotorcraft and light aerial vehicles,
and biological propulsion.Comment: Under revie

Social Media Is Permanent, You Are Not: Evaluating The Digital Property Dilemma In Florida Probate
The digital after life1 has quickly become the brave new world of
probate law and estate planning.2 The reason for this is because as recently
as 2010, reports show that “[seventy-seven percent] of Americans use e-mail
or the [I]nternet, at least occasionally
Reconsideration of the taxonomy of \u3cem\u3eEuscorpius tergestinus\u3c/em\u3e (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae)
After the revision of Fet & Soleglad (2002), Euscorpius tergestinus (C. L. Koch, 1837) was considered a polymorphic species widespread from France to Croatia. In this study, we reconsidered the taxonomy of E. tergestinus s.str. based on morphological and genetic evidence, its range, and its original description. Euscorpius aquilejensis (C. L. Koch, 1837), stat. nov., previously synonymous with E. tergestinus, is elevated to species status herein. A preliminary phylogenetic analysis based on available GenBank 16S rDNA data shows a separate, basal position of E. aquilejensis and some other Euscorpius species, which implies that the subgenus Euscorpius s.str. is paraphyletic
Inherent-Structure Dynamics and Diffusion in Liquids
The self-diffusion constant D is expressed in terms of transitions among the
local minima of the potential (inherent structure, IS) and their correlations.
The formulae are evaluated and tested against simulation in the supercooled,
unit-density Lennard-Jones liquid. The approximation of uncorrelated
IS-transition (IST) vectors, D_{0}, greatly exceeds D in the upper temperature
range, but merges with simulation at reduced T ~ 0.50. Since uncorrelated IST
are associated with a hopping mechanism, the condition D ~ D_{0} provides a new
way to identify the crossover to hopping. The results suggest that theories of
diffusion in deeply supercooled liquids may be based on weakly correlated IST.Comment: submitted to PR
A new species of \u3cem\u3eEuscorpius\u3c/em\u3e Thorell, 1876 from the western Balkans (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae)
A new scorpion species, Euscorpius feti sp. n., is described from the western Balkans based on morphological evidence. It is characterized by long-limbed overall appearance, medium-large size, light brown to reddish color, and a high trichobothrial count (Pv = 11–12, et = 8, em = 4 and eb = 4)
Fierce Compassion and Reflexivity: Transforming Practice at the University of Melbourne Archives
In 2016, the University of Melbourne Archives (UMA) commenced a program of change with regard to its records about child welfare in Victoria. This was driven by a social justice imperative to repair past harms done to Care Leavers (people who grew up in orphanages, children's homes, or foster care) while in out-of-home care, and for whom records play an integral role. UMA worked with Care Leavers, advocacy groups and support services to review their policies, procedures and practices around archival documentation and access arrangements. In this article, the authors explore those efforts through the prism of radical empathy (or rather a compassionate response to empathy) and analyze what was achieved and the challenges that remain.Â
