    Cultural Awareness Training: Preparing New Instructors for the Millennial Student

    It is not unusual for instructors to face challenges relating to, understanding, or motivating their students. Educators can chalk this up to a variety of factors, including differences in and between education levels, life experiences, and ascribed power roles. We argue, however, that it is the generational differences between instructors and their students that pose a much greater challenge toward the establishment of a productive teacher-student relationship and the facilitation of learning. With the age of the Millennial college student upon us, we make the case that the most important area of training for new instructors is developing cultural awareness about the Millennial generation. As McGlynn (2005) said, “facilitating learning involves understanding who our students are” (p. 12). As such, we believe it is essential for new, and seasoned, instructors to learn about the social, cultural and environmental factors that shape the Millennial learner (Roberts, Newman, & Schwartzstein, 2012). In the following pages, we hope to inspire cultural curiosity through highlighting Millennial characteristics and recommending tools for developing cultural awareness in new college instructors

    In the present work, the hybrid nanomaterial such as Graphene – Multiwalled carbon nanotube reinforced epoxy composites are fabricated with dif ferent weight fraction of the reinforcement and are subjected to wear test. The mechanical properties of these composites are investigated and found posses decrease in wear rate, as the increased in weight fraction of the reinforcement there is reducing wear rate compared to the based matrix fabricated using the same process

    Using the March of Dimes "Becoming a Mom" Prenatal Program to Improve Maternal Attitudes and Knowledge

    BACKGROUND: Premature birth, low birth weight, birth defects, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome were identified as issues contributing to infant mortality in Kansas by the state’s Blue Ribbon Panel. The March of Dimes Becoming a Mom (BAM) prenatal program was implemented in four counties identified with high infant mortality rates and significant birth numbers (Geary, Saline, Sedgwick, and Shawnee) by the Kansas Blue Ribbon Panel. The purpose of this study was to identify the changes in prenatal attitudes, knowledge, and health outcomes among BAM program participants. METHODS: A collaborative community-based model incorporating multidisciplinary teams was created to address the health disparity gap in birth outcomes. Patients participated in multiple prenatal education sessions using a curriculum developed by the March of Dimes. A pre-/post-test design was implemented for the prenatal sessions. Changes in attitudes were assessed using descriptive statistics. Paired t-tests were used to assess the difference in knowledge questions from pre- and post-tests. Health outcomes were analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: Participants were 69% White, 87% spoke English, 64% were under age 26, 41% were employed full time, 45% had some high school or had a diploma, 39% had Medicaid, and 49% were enrolled in WIC (N=114). Participants demonstrated a statistically significant increase in knowledge among 14 out of 32 questions including: identifying signs of preterm labor, what to do during preterm labor, postpartum symptoms, and baby sleep position. There were also changes in prenatal attitudes including: need for prenatal care as soon as possible, continuing prenatal care when feeling healthy and not smoking during pregnancy. Relative frequencies were tabulated for week of delivery, infant birth weight, type of delivery, and presence of maternal and infant medical conditions. CONCLUSION: The March of Dimes BAM program participants reported improvements in prenatal knowledge. The BAM program can improve maternal knowledge through a community-based collaborative model of care. The combined prenatal education program with quality prenatal care can result in better maternal and child health outcomes

    Frugivory and Seed Dispersal by Carnivorans

    Seed dispersal is critical to the ecological performance of sexually reproducing plant species and the communities that they form. The Mammalian order Carnivora provide valuable and effective seed dispersal services but tend to be overlooked in much of the seed dispersal literature. Here we review the literature on the role of Carnivorans in seed dispersal, with a literature search in the Scopus reference database. Overall, we found that Carnivorans are prolific seed dispersers. Carnivorans’ diverse and plastic diets allow them to consume large volumes of over a hundred families of fruit and disperse large quantities of seeds across landscapes. Gut passage by these taxa generally has a neutral effect on seed viability. While the overall effect of Carnivorans on seed dispersal quality is complex, Carnivorans likely increase long-distance dispersal services that may aid the ability of some plant species to persist in the face of climate change

    Mesopredator frugivory has no effect on seed viability and emergence under experimental conditions

    Members of the order Carnivora are a unique and important seed disperser who consume and deposit undamaged seeds while providing regular long-distance seed dispersal opportunities. Some members of Carnivora, such as coyotes (Canis latrans), are undergoing range expansions which may help the plant species they consume colonize new locations or replace dispersal services provided by recently extirpated species. In this study, we evaluated aspects of the seed dispersal effectiveness of coyotes and gut passage time to determine the potential dispersal distances for three commonly consumed and commonly occurring plant species (Amelanchier alnifolia, Celtis ehrenbergiana, and Juniperus osteosperma). We also investigated the potential effects of secondary dispersal of seeds away from scats by comparing seedling emergence from whole scats to those where seeds were first removed from scats. We found that seeds generally took between 4 and 24 h to pass through the digestive tract of coyotes, which could result in regular seed dispersal up to 7 km. Gut passage through coyotes had no effect on seed viability or emergence for any of the three plant species, including that gut passage for A. alnifolia and J. osteosperma does not replace cold stratification for breaking physiological dormancy. By simulating secondary dispersal, we found that 22% (±8.2%) more C. ehrenbergiana seedlings emerged when seeds were removed from scats and those seedlings emerged 7 d earlier (±5 d) compared to seeds that remained in the coyote scat. Coyotes are effective seed dispersers, with the potential for regular long-distance dispersal services and for providing opportunities for secondary seed dispersal, which could aid in climate migration or serve to replace extirpated dispersal mutualists

    A Systematic Review on Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) as a Biosorbent of Cadmium

    Water hyacinth has gained a noteworthy reputation as the worst invasive macrophyte for its alarming proliferation rates, threatening transportation and irrigation systems and ecosystem biodiversity. Sustainable efforts have found the plant to demonstrate efficiency in sequestering toxic heavy metals such as cadmium from marine environments. Cadmium presence in water, primarily caused by anthropogenic sources, poses public health risks due to its toxicity. Consequently, studies on the applications of Eichhornia crassipes and the removal of cadmium have become active research areas in recent decades. This review presents literature related to the Cd sorption capacity of water hyacinth biosorbents. The effects and optimization of parameters including treatment, temperature, pH, initial sorbate and sorbent concentration have been explored in classical and competitive adsorption models. Investigations on kinetics, equilibrium, and desorption studies have also been conducted. From the gathered literature, water hyacinth biosorbents show potential for industrial-scale applications, but its metal recovery and utilization in multi-metal and continuous sorption may require further evaluation

    A Qualitative Assessment of Kansas Tracking and Reporting of Controlled Substances (K-TRACS)

    Introduction. This study assessed the Kansas Tracking and Reporting of Controlled Substances system (K-TRACS), the online controlled prescription medication monitoring website in Kansas. The specific aims were to determine if and when pharmacists and physicians in Kansas were using K-TRACS and to identify any perceived benefits or barriers to using K-TRACS. Methods. A non-randomized, convenience sample of Kansas pharmacists and family physicians were interviewed face to face using a guided semi-structured questionnaire. NVivo 10 (QSR International Pty Ltd.) was used to analyze data. Results. Ten physicians and sixteen pharmacists were interviewed. All pharmacists and 70% of physicians were using K-TRACS. Usage was prompted by encounters with new patients or unease with the patient interaction. The perceived benefits included increased communication with the patient and all providers, increased provider comfort with treating chronic pain, and altered prescriber habits. Barriers to the use of K-TRACS were identified as login, password, and operating system problems. Conclusions. Among study participants, K-TRACS is used regularly, is perceived to be a benefit to providers, patients and communities, and has become a useful new tool in the treatment of chronic pain. K-TRACS is perceived to facilitate increased communication between providers and with patients
