    Complex temperature and concentration dependent self-assembly of poly(2-oxazoline) block copolymers

    The effect of polymer concentration on the temperature-induced self-association of a block copolymer comprising a poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) block and a random copolymer block consisting of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline and 2-n-propyl-2-oxazoline (PEtO80-block-P(EtOxx-stat-PropO40-x) with x = 0, 4, or 8 were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmittance measurements (turbidimetry). The polymers reveal a complex aggregation behavior with up to three relaxation modes in the DLS data and with a transmittance that first goes through a minimum before it declines at high temperatures. At low temperatures, unassociated polymer chains were found to co-exist with larger aggregates. As the temperature is increased, enhanced association and contraction of the aggregates results in a drop of the transmittance values. The aggregates fragment into smaller micellar-like clusters when the temperature is raised further, causing the samples to become optically clear again. At high temperatures, the polymers aggregate into large compact clusters, and the samples become turbid. Interestingly, very large aggregates were observed at low temperatures when the polymer concentrations were low. The formation of these aggregates was also promoted by a more hydrophilic copolymer structure. The formation of large aggregates with an open structure at conditions where the solvent conditions are improved is probably caused by depletion flocculation of the smaller aggregates.publishedVersio

    The frequency of very young galaxies in the local Universe - II. The view from SDSS spectra

    Only a handful of galaxies in the local Universe appear to be very young. We estimate the fraction of very young galaxies (VYGs), defined as those with more than half their stellar masses formed within the last Gyr. We fit non-parametric star formation histories (SFHs) to ~280 000 galaxy spectra from a flux- and volume-limited subsample of the Main Galaxy Sample (MGS) of the SDSS, which is also complete in mass-to-light ratio, thus properly accounting for passive galaxies of a given mass. The VYG fractions decrease with increasing galaxy stellar mass, from ~50% at m=108Mm = 10^8\,\rm M_\odot to ~0.1% at m=1011.5Mm = 10^{11.5}\,\rm M_\odot, with differences of up to 1 dex between the different spectral models used to estimate the SFH and on how we treat aperture effects. But old stellar populations may hide in our VYGs despite our conservative VYG sample built with galaxies that are globally bluer than within the region viewed by the SDSS fibre. The VYG fractions versus mass decrease more gradually compared to the Tweed et al. predictions using analytical and semi-analytical models of galaxy formation, but agree better with the SIMBA hydrodynamical simulation. These discrepancies highlight the usefulness of VYGs in constraining the strong uncertainties in both galaxy formation models and spectral modelling of galaxy SFHs. Given the lognormal cosmic SFH, these mean VYG fractions suggest that galaxies with m>108Mm > 10^8\,\rm M_\odot undergo at most 4 major starbursts on average.Comment: Published version, consolidated with Erratum on caption of Table A1 (the table is for all 404 931 galaxies in the Clean sample, not just those that are candidate VYGs according to at least one spectral model).     Thermoresponsive poly(2-oxazoline) block copolymers exhibiting two cloud points: complex multistep assembly behavior

    Aqueous solutions of poly(2-oxazoline) block copolymers consisting of a 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline block and a block consisting of a random copolymer of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline and 2-n-propyl-2-oxazoline (PEtOx-block-P(EtOx-stat-PropOx)) have been studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS), static light scattering (SLS), and turbidimetry. Even at temperatures significantly below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), polymer unimers are found to coexist with a few large aggregates with an open structure. When heated, the systems exhibit an intricate transmittance behavior whereby the samples becomes visually clear again after an initial cloud point and then exhibit a second cloud point at even higher temperatures. The DLS data indicate that the aggregates formed around the first cloud point restructure and fragment into smaller micelle-like structures ascribed to further dehydration of the more hydrophobic PPropOx containing block, causing the samples to become optically clear again. The observed fragmentation is confirmed by the SLS experiments. At even higher temperatures, both blocks become hydrophobic, causing the formation of large, compact aggregates, resulting in a second cloud point

    Prediction of lightning inception by large ice particles and extensive air showers

    We derive that lightning can start if the electric field is 15% of the breakdown field, and if elongated ice particles of 6 cm length and 100 free electrons per cm3 are present. This is one particular example set from a parameter range that we discuss as well. Our simulations include the permittivity ε(ω) of ice. 100 free electrons per cm3 exist at 5.5 km altitude in air showers created by cosmic particles of at least 5×1015  eV. If the electric field zone is 3 m high and 0.2  km2 in the horizontal direction, at least one discharge per minute can be triggered. The size distribution of the ice particles is crucial for our argument; more detailed measurements would be desirable

    Mouse zygote morphokinetics were measured during interphase, the mitotic period, cytokinesis, and two-cell stage. Sequences of rounder–distorted–rounder shapes were revealed, as were changing patterns of cross section area. A calcium chelator and an actin-disrupting agent inhibited the area changes that occurred between pronuclear envelope breakdown and cytokinesis. During cell division, two vortices developed in each nascent cell and they rotated in opposite directions at each end of the cell, a pattern that sometimes persisted for up to 10 h. Exchange with the environment may have been promoted by these shape and area cycles and persisting circulation in the cytoplasm may have a similar function between a cell's interior and periphery. Some of these movements were sporadically also seen in human zygotes with abnormal numbers of pronuclei and the two-cell stages that developed from these compromised human zygotes
