Field Theory And Second Renormalization Group For Multifractals In Percolation
The field-theory for multifractals in percolation is reformulated in such a
way that multifractal exponents clearly appear as eigenvalues of a second
renormalization group. The first renormalization group describes geometrical
properties of percolation clusters, while the second-one describes electrical
properties, including noise cumulants. In this context, multifractal exponents
are associated with symmetry-breaking fields in replica space. This provides an
explanation for their observability. It is suggested that multifractal
exponents are ''dominant'' instead of ''relevant'' since there exists an
arbitrary scale factor which can change their sign from positive to negative
without changing the Physics of the problem.Comment: RevTex, 10 page

New Insights into White-Light Flare Emission from Radiative-Hydrodynamic Modeling of a Chromospheric Condensation
(abridged) The heating mechanism at high densities during M dwarf flares is
poorly understood. Spectra of M dwarf flares in the optical and
near-ultraviolet wavelength regimes have revealed three continuum components
during the impulsive phase: 1) an energetically dominant blackbody component
with a color temperature of T 10,000 K in the blue-optical, 2) a smaller
amount of Balmer continuum emission in the near-ultraviolet at lambda 3646
Angstroms and 3) an apparent pseudo-continuum of blended high-order Balmer
lines. These properties are not reproduced by models that employ a typical
"solar-type" flare heating level in nonthermal electrons, and therefore our
understanding of these spectra is limited to a phenomenological interpretation.
We present a new 1D radiative-hydrodynamic model of an M dwarf flare from
precipitating nonthermal electrons with a large energy flux of erg
cm s. The simulation produces bright continuum emission from a
dense, hot chromospheric condensation. For the first time, the observed color
temperature and Balmer jump ratio are produced self-consistently in a
radiative-hydrodynamic flare model. We find that a T 10,000 K
blackbody-like continuum component and a small Balmer jump ratio result from
optically thick Balmer and Paschen recombination radiation, and thus the
properties of the flux spectrum are caused by blue light escaping over a larger
physical depth range compared to red and near-ultraviolet light. To model the
near-ultraviolet pseudo-continuum previously attributed to overlapping Balmer
lines, we include the extra Balmer continuum opacity from Landau-Zener
transitions that result from merged, high order energy levels of hydrogen in a
dense, partially ionized atmosphere. This reveals a new diagnostic of ambient
charge density in the densest regions of the atmosphere that are heated during
dMe and solar flares.Comment: 50 pages, 2 tables, 13 figures. Accepted for publication in the Solar

Gaia white dwarfs within 40Â pc I : spectroscopic observations of new candidates
We present a spectroscopic survey of 230 white dwarf candidates within 40 pc of the Sun from the William Herschel Telescope and Gran Telescopio Canarias. All candidates were selected from Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and in almost all cases had no prior spectroscopic classifications. We find a total of 191 confirmed white dwarfs and 39 main-sequence star contaminants. The majority of stellar remnants in the sample are relatively cool (〈Teff〉 = 6200 K), showing either hydrogen Balmer lines or a featureless spectrum, corresponding to 89 DA and 76 DC white dwarfs, respectively. We also recover two DBA white dwarfs and 9–10 magnetic remnants. We find two carbon-bearing DQ stars and 14 new metal-rich white dwarfs. This includes the possible detection of the first ultra-cool white dwarf with metal lines. We describe three DZ stars for which we find at least four different metal species, including one which is strongly Fe- and Ni-rich, indicative of the accretion of a planetesimal with core-Earth composition. We find one extremely massive (1.31 ± 0.01 M⊙) DA white dwarf showing weak Balmer lines, possibly indicating stellar magnetism. Another white dwarf shows strong Balmer line emission but no infrared excess, suggesting a low-mass sub-stellar companion. High spectroscopic completeness (>99%) has now been reached for Gaia DR2 sources within 40 pc sample, in the northern hemisphere (δ > 0 deg) and located on the white dwarf cooling track in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. A statistical study of the full northern sample is presented in a companion paper
An eclipsing 47Â minute double white dwarf binary at 400Â pc
We present the discovery of the eclipsing double white dwarf (WD) binary WDJ 022558.21−692025.38 that has an orbital period of 47.19 min. Following identification with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, we obtained time-series ground based spectroscopy and high-speed multi-band ULTRACAM photometry which indicate a primary DA WD of mass 0.40 ± 0.04 M⊙ and a 0.28 ± 0.02 M⊙ mass secondary WD, which is likely of type DA as well. The system becomes the third-closest eclipsing double WD binary discovered with a distance of approximately 400 pc and will be a detectable source for upcoming gravitational wave detectors in the mHz frequency range. Its orbital decay will be measurable photometrically within 10 yrs to a precision of better than 1%. The fate of the binary is to merge in approximately 41 Myr, likely forming a single, more massive WD
School dropout, problem behaviour and poor academic achievement : a longitudinal view of portuguese male offenders
This study examines school drop outs from the perspective of male adults
themselves through interviews with offenders currently serving sentences. Participants
were 10 Portuguese male inmates, between the ages of 19 and 46 years of age,
incarcerated in two prison facilities of the Azores. Qualitative and interpretative methods
were carried out using a semi-structured in-depth individual interview that was audiorecorded
and conducted on the basis of a list of topics. Interview transcripts and thematic
analysis were used in data treatment and analysis. The findings primarily indicate that
poor academic achievement and emotional and behavioural difficulties of participants
played a particular role in early school drop out. The trajectories these individuals
followed within the education system presented problem behaviour, learning disabilities,
and/or foster care interventions. While school drop out circumstances were apparently
various, analysis showed that they were underpinned by three distinct sets of conditions
generally not addressed by the education system. The analysis of the triggering factors
and the maintenance dynamics of school drop outs indicated three distinct types:
retention/absenteeism, life turning points and positive resolution. Implications for
secondary prevention and screening practices are discussed.FCT (SFRH/ BD/ 44245/ 2008)CIEC - unidade de investigação 317 da FC
