del aprendizaje cooperativo.SUMMARY -- Cooperative learning is relatively common, but emphasis
on its important aspects is not always strong
enough, and students may end up without a proper understanding
of what cooperative learning is about. We
aimed at addressing these limitations, with an emphasis
on individual responsibility. To that end, one of the
initiatives consisted of promoting specific cooperativelearning
skills by appropriate grading mechanisms in
each of the four different tests. No academic improvement
has been evidenced with respect to students that
did not learn cooperatively. However, students improved
their knowledge of cooperative learning, which benefits
their academic and professional lives. Details of
this experience can hopefully be useful to other lecturers
with similar concerns on cooperative learning
Peer Reviewe
Egocentric video summarisation via purpose-orientedframe scoring and selection
Existing video summarisation techniques are quite generic in nature, since they generally overlook the important aspect of what actual purpose the summary will be serving. In sharp contrast with this mainstream work, it can be acknowledged that there are many possible purposes the same videos can be summarised for. Accordingly, we consider a novel perspective: summaries with a purpose. This work is an attempt to both, call the attention on this neglected aspect of video summarisation research, and to illustrate it and explore it with two concrete purposes, focusing on first-person-view videos. The proposed purpose-oriented summarisation techniques are framed under the common (frame-level) scoring and selection paradigm, and have been tested on two egocentric datasets, BEOID and EGTEA-Gaze+. The necessary purpose-specific evaluation metrics are also introduced.
The proposed approach is compared with two purpose-agnostic summarisation baselines. On the one hand, a partially agnostic method uses the scores obtained by the proposed approach, but follows a standard generic frame selection technique. On the other hand, the fully agnostic method do not use any purpose-based information, and relies on generic concepts such as diversity and representativeness. The results of the experimental work show that the proposed approaches compare favourably with respect to both baselines. More specifically, the purpose-specific approach generally produces summaries with the best compromise between summary lengths and favourable purpose-specific metrics. Interestingly, it is also observed that results of the partially-agnostic baseline tend to be better than those of the fully-agnostic one. These observations provide strong evidence on the advantage and relevance of purpose-specific summarisation techniques and evaluation metrics, and encourage further work on this important subject.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume
Study of Convolutional Neural Networks for Global Parametric Motion Estimation on Log-Polar Imagery
[EN] The problem of motion estimation from images has been widely studied in the past. Although many mature solutions exist, there are still open issues and challenges to be addressed. For instance, in spite of the well-known performance of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in many computer vision problems, only very recent work has started to explore CNNs to learning to estimate motion, as an alternative to manually-designed algorithms. These few initial efforts, however, have focused on conventional Cartesian images, while other imaging models have not been studied. This work explores the yet unknown role of CNNs in estimating global parametric motion in log-polar images. Despite its favourable properties, estimating some motion components in this model has proven particularly challenging with past approaches. It is therefore highly important to understand how CNNs behave when their input are log-polar images, since they involve a complex mapping in the motion model, a polar image geometry, and space-variant resolution. To this end, a CNN is considered in this work for regressing the motion parameters. Experiments on existing image datasets using synthetic image deformations reveal that, interestingly, standard CNNs can successfully learn to estimate global parametric motion on log-polar images with accuracies comparable to or better than with Cartesian images. This work was supported in part by the Universitat Jaume I, Castellon, Spain, through the Pla de promocio de la investigacio, under Project UJI-B2018-44; and in part by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion y Universidades through the Research Network under Grant RED2018-102511-T.Traver, VJ.; Paredes Palacios, R. ¿Por qué no enseñamos a aprender cooperativamente?

Characterising Players of a Cube Puzzle Game with a Two-level Bag of Words
Ponencia presentada en UMAP '21: Adjunct Proceedings of the 29th ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization, Utrecht (Netherlands), June 21 - 25, 2021This work explores an unsupervised approach for modelling players
of a 2D cube puzzle game with the ultimate goal of customising the
game for particular players based solely on their interaction data.
To that end, user interactions when solving puzzles are coded as
images. Then, a feature embedding is learned for each puzzle with
a convolutional network trained to regress the players’ comple tion effort in terms of time and number of clicks. Next, the known
bag-of-words technique is used at two levels. First, sets of puzzles
are represented using the puzzle feature embeddings as the input
space. Second, the resulting first-level histograms are used as input
space for characterising players. As a result, new players can be
characterised in terms of the resulting second-level histograms.
Preliminary results indicate that the approach is effective for char acterising players in terms of performance. It is also tentatively
observed that other personal perceptions and preferences, beyond
performance, are somehow implicitly captured from behavioural
data
