    Multimodal Emotion Recognition via Convolutional Neural Networks: Comparison of different strategies on two multimodal datasets

    The aim of this paper is to investigate emotion recognition using a multimodal approach that exploits convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with multiple input. Multimodal approaches allow different modalities to cooperate in order to achieve generally better performances because different features are extracted from different pieces of information. In this work, the facial frames, the optical flow computed from consecutive facial frames, and the Mel Spectrograms (from the word melody) are extracted from videos and combined together in different ways to understand which modality combination works better. Several experiments are run on the models by first considering one modality at a time so that good accuracy results are found on each modality. Afterward, the models are concatenated to create a final model that allows multiple inputs. For the experiments the datasets used are BAUM-1 ((Bahçeşehir University Multimodal Affective Database - 1) and RAVDESS (Ryerson Audio–Visual Database of Emotional Speech and Song), which both collect two distinguished sets of videos based on the different intensity of the expression, that is acted/strong or spontaneous/normal, providing the representations of the following emotional states that will be taken into consideration: angry, disgust, fearful, happy and sad. The performances of the proposed models are shown through accuracy results and some confusion matrices, demonstrating better accuracy than the compared proposals in the literature. The best accuracy achieved on BAUM-1 dataset is about 95%, while on RAVDESS it is about 95.5%

    An android architecture for bio-inspired honest signalling in Human-Humanoid Interaction

    This paper outlines an augmented robotic architecture to study the conditions of successful Human-Humanoid Interaction (HHI). The architecture is designed as a testable model generator for interaction centred on the ability to emit, display and detect honest signals. First we overview the biological theory in which the concept of honest signals has been put forward in order to assess its explanatory power. We reconstruct the application of the concept of honest signalling in accounting for interaction in strategic contexts and in laying bare the foundation for an automated social metrics. We describe the modules of the architecture, which is intended to implement the concept of honest signalling in connection with a refinement provided by delivering the sense of co-presence in a shared environment. Finally, an analysis of Honest Signals, in term of body postures, exhibited by participants during the preliminary experiment with the Geminoid Hi-1 is provided

    QUIJOTE Scientific Results. II. Polarisation Measurements of the Microwave Emission in the Galactic molecular complexes W43 and W47 and supernova remnant W44

    We present Q-U-I JOint TEnerife (QUIJOTE) intensity and polarisation maps at 10-20 GHz covering a region along the Galactic plane 24<l<45 deg, |b|<8 deg. These maps result from 210 h of data, have a sensitivity in polarisation of ~40 muK/beam and an angular resolution of ~1 deg. Our intensity data are crucial to confirm the presence of anomalous microwave emission (AME) towards the two molecular complexes W43 (22 sigma) and W47 (8 sigma). We also detect at high significance (6 sigma) AME associated with W44, the first clear detection of this emission towards a SNR. The new QUIJOTE polarisation data, in combination with WMAP, are essential to: i) Determine the spectral index of the synchrotron emission in W44, beta_sync =-0.62 +/-0.03, in good agreement with the value inferred from the intensity spectrum once a free-free component is included in the fit. ii) Trace the change in the polarisation angle associated with Faraday rotation in the direction of W44 with rotation measure -404 +/- 49 rad/m2. And iii) set upper limits on the polarisation of W43 of Pi_AME <0.39 per cent (95 per cent C.L.) from QUIJOTE 17~GHz, and <0.22 per cent from WMAP 41 GHz data, which are the most stringent constraints ever obtained on the polarisation fraction of the AME. For typical physical conditions (grain temperature and magnetic field strengths), and in the case of perfect alignment between the grains and the magnetic field, the models of electric or magnetic dipole emissions predict higher polarisation fractions.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Prevalence and clinical significance of red flags in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

    Introduction: We sought to determine prevalence and predictive accuracy of clinical markers (red flags, RF), known to be associated with specific systemic disease in a consecutive cohort of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). / Methods: We studied 129 consecutive patients (23.7 ± 20.9 years, range 0–74 years; male/female 68%/32%). Pre-specified RF were categorized into five domains: family history; signs/symptoms; electrocardiography; imaging; and laboratory. Sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp), negative predictive value (NPV), positive predictive value (PPV), and predictive accuracy of RF were analyzed in the genotyped population. / Results: In the overall cohort of 129 patients, 169 RF were identified in 62 patients (48%). Prevalence of RF was higher in infants (78%) and in adults >55 years old (58%). Following targeted genetic and clinical evaluation, 94 patients (74%) had a definite diagnosis (sarcomeric HCM or specific causes of HCM). We observed 14 RF in 13 patients (21%) with sarcomeric gene disease, 129 RF in 34 patients (97%) with other specific causes of HCM, and 26 RF in 15 patients (45%) with idiopathic HCM (p  55yo. Se, Sp, PPV, NPV and PA of RF were 97%, 70%, 55%, 98% and 77%, respectively. Single and clinical combination of RF (clusters) had an high specificity, NPV and predictive accuracy for the specific etiologies (syndromes/metabolic/infiltrative disorders associated with HCM). / Conclusions: An extensive diagnostic work up, focused on analysis of specific diagnostic RF in patients with unexplained LVH facilitates a clinical diagnosis in 74% of patients with HCM

    Delay in diagnosis of breast cancer in a public oncologic hospital

    Study model: A prospective, observational, transversal study. Objective: To evaluate the main factors related to delayed diagnosis of breast cancer. Method: A structured questionnaire was performed at the first clinical consultation, evaluating factors related to delayed in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Results: 156 women were selected for the study, where the majority had low education (58.9%), aged between 40 and 69 years (73.1%), lack of knowledge about breast self-examination (55.8 %) and no regularity of mammography (52.6%). 72.4 % had tumor at advanced stage at diagnosis. There was an association between delayed diagnosis and age. The multiple regression model adjusted for by age, showed increase risk related to health system (OR= 3.08), education (OR=5.46) and adherence (OR=5.67) were associated with late clinical stage at diagnosis. Conclusion: The factors related to advanced stage at diagnosis are linked and multiples. It indicates the necessity to perform strategies related to increase the adherence to mammographyModelo do estudo: Estudo prospectivo, observacional, transversal. Objetivo: Avaliar os principais fatores relacionados ao atraso no diagnóstico do câncer de mama. Método: Questionário aplicado na primeira consulta, avaliando os fatores relacionados ao atraso no diagnóstico do câncer de mama. Resultados: 156 mulheres foram avaliadas. A maioria apresentava baixa escolaridade (58,9%), faixa etária entre 40 e 69 anos (73,1%), falta de conhecimento sobre o autoexame mamário (55,8%) e não regularidade do exame mamográfico (52,6%). 72,4% apresentavam tumor de mama avançado ao diagnóstico. Houve associação entre o atraso diagnóstico e a faixa etária. No modelo de regressão múltipla ajustado por idade, o sistema de saúde (OR=3,08), a educação (OR=5,46) e a adesão (OR=5,67) estiveram relacionados a elevação do risco de estádio avançado ao diagnóstico.     Effectiveness of laxatives in elderly - a cross sectional study in nursing homes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Laxatives are efficient drugs, but the effectiveness has been questioned. In nursing homes, the prevalence of constipation is high and laxatives are commonly used drugs. The aims of the study were to assess the effectiveness of laxative therapy in an everyday setting in Norwegian nursing homes, study differences between treatment regimens and factors associated with normal bowel function.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional study. After giving informed consent, residents above 60 years of age using laxatives for functional constipation were included, and their characteristics, medical history, use of drugs and bowel functions were recorded. Normal bowel function was defined as bowel movements from 3 times/week to 3 times/day and stool consistency 3-5 on Bristol Stool Form Scale.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Out of 647 residents in the nursing homes, 197 were included and 116 (59%) had normal bowel function. The treatment effect did not differ significantly between the laxatives, treatment regimens or expected efficacy of the regimens. The treatment was unsatisfactorily adapted to individual needs. In subjects with normal bowel function, 113 (97%) had persistent complaints; 68 (59.5%), 10 (8.0%), 34 (28.6%) and 26 (22.5%) reported straining, manual manoeuvre to facilitate bowel movements, feeling of incomplete bowel movements, and feeling of anorectal obstruction respectively. Good nutritional status, previous or present cancer disease and anxiety/depression were predictors of normal bowel function.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Treatment of constipation in nursing homes was unsatisfactory. Nearly all patients with normal stool frequency and consistence had some persistent complaints. Improved nutrition and individualization of the treatment could improve the outcome.</p

    Heart failure during the COVID-19 pandemic: clinical, diagnostic, management, and organizational dilemmas

    The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) infection pandemic has affected the care of patients with heart failure (HF). Several consensus documents describe the appropriate diagnostic algorithm and treatment approach for patients with HF and associated COVID-19 infection. However, few questions about the mechanisms by which COVID can exacerbate HF in patients with high-risk (Stage B) or symptomatic HF (Stage C) remain unanswered. Therefore, the type of HF occurring during infection is poorly investigated. The diagnostic differentiation and management should be focused on the identification of the HF phenotype, underlying causes, and subsequent tailored therapy. In this framework, the relationship existing between COVID and onset of acute decompensated HF, isolated right HF, and cardiogenic shock is questioned, and the specific management is mainly based on local hospital organization rather than a standardized model. Similarly, some specific populations such as advanced HF, heart transplant, patients with left ventricular assist device (LVAD), or valve disease remain under investigated. In this systematic review, we examine recent advances regarding the relationships between HF and COVID-19 pandemic with respect to epidemiology, pathogenetic mechanisms, and differential diagnosis. Also, according to the recent HF guidelines definition, we highlight different clinical profile identification, pointing out the main concerns in understudied HF populations.© 2022 The Authors.     The QUIJOTE experiment: project overview and first results

    QUIJOTE (Q-U-I JOint TEnerife) is a new polarimeter aimed to characterize the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background and other Galactic and extragalactic signals at medium and large angular scales in the frequency range 10-40 GHz. The multi-frequency (10-20~GHz) instrument, mounted on the first QUIJOTE telescope, saw first light on November 2012 from the Teide Observatory (2400~m a.s.l). During 2014 the second telescope has been installed at this observatory. A second instrument at 30~GHz will be ready for commissioning at this telescope during summer 2015, and a third additional instrument at 40~GHz is now being developed.
