Untangling the concept of coercive control: Theorizing domestic violent crime
The paper assesses three approaches to domestic violence: two that use the concept of ‘coercive control’ and one that uses ‘domestic violent crime’. These are: Stark’s concept of coercive control; Johnson’s distinction between situational couple violence and intimate terrorism, in which coercive control is confined to the latter; and that of domestic violent crime, in which all physical violence is conceptualised as coercive and controlling. The paper assesses these three approaches on seven issues. It offers original analysis of data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales concerning variations in repetition and seriousness in domestic violent crime. It links escalation in domestic violent crime to variations in the economic resources of the victim. It concludes that the concept of domestic violent crime is preferable to that of coercive control when seeking to explain variations in domestic violence

Is violence increasing or decreasing?: a new methodology to measure repeat attacks making visible the significance of gender and domestic relations
The fall in the rate of violent crime has stopped. This is a finding of an investigation using the Crime Survey for England and Wales, 1994–2014, and an improved methodology to include the experiences of high-frequency victims. The cap on the number of crimes included has been removed. We prevent overall volatility from rising by using three-year moving averages and regression techniques that take account of all the data points rather than point to point analysis. The difference between our findings and official statistics is driven by violent crime committed against women and by domestic perpetrators. The timing of the turning point in the trajectory of violent crime corresponds with the economic crisis in 2008/09

The decline in the rate of domestic violence has stopped: removing the cap on repeat victimisation reveals more violence

Consultation on high frequency repeat victims in the Crime Survey - our response
The current methodology for handling repeat victimisation in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) is capping. Repeat victimisations for any series of crimes are capped at maximum of 5 crimes before the data is used to produce crime rate estimates for England and Wales. The new proposals merely shift the level of this cap. Capping produces inaccurate estimates of crime which are systematically biased in specific ways, no matter what level the cap is set at.
It is possible to increase the accuracy of crime estimates from the CSEW by deriving them from all reported crimes, and without increasing volatility by utilising three-year rolling averages. A move away from capping to deriving crime estimates based on all reported crimes would increase: relevance, accuracy, clarity, coherence and comparability of crime statistics and would better conform to ONS quality principles. A capping methodology does not conform to these ONS quality principles
A Water Maser and Ammonia Survey of GLIMPSE Extended Green Objects (EGOs)
We present the results of a Nobeyama 45-m water maser and ammonia survey of
all 94 northern GLIMPSE Extended Green Objects (EGOs), a sample of massive
young stellar objects (MYSOs) identified based on their extended 4.5 micron
emission. We observed the ammonia (1,1), (2,2), and (3,3) inversion lines, and
detect emission towards 97%, 63%, and 46% of our sample, respectively (median
rms ~50 mK). The water maser detection rate is 68% (median rms ~0.11 Jy). The
derived water maser and clump-scale gas properties are consistent with the
identification of EGOs as young MYSOs. To explore the degree of variation among
EGOs, we analyze subsamples defined based on MIR properties or maser
associations. Water masers and warm dense gas, as indicated by emission in the
higher-excitation ammonia transitions, are most frequently detected towards
EGOs also associated with both Class I and II methanol masers. 95% (81%) of
such EGOs are detected in water (ammonia(3,3)), compared to only 33% (7%) of
EGOs without either methanol maser type. As populations, EGOs associated with
Class I and/or II methanol masers have significantly higher ammonia linewidths,
column densities, and kinetic temperatures than EGOs undetected in methanol
maser surveys. However, we find no evidence for statistically significant
differences in water maser properties (such as maser luminosity) among any EGO
subsamples. Combining our data with the 1.1 mm continuum Bolocam Galactic Plane
Survey, we find no correlation between isotropic water maser luminosity and
clump number density. Water maser luminosity is weakly correlated with clump

Study on the gender dimension of trafficking in human beings
The purpose of this study is to contribute to the identification and understanding of what it means to be ‘taking into account the gender perspective, to strengthen the prevention of this crime and protection of the victims there-of’, as required in Article 1 of European Union (EU) Directive 2011/36/EU on Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and Protecting its Victims in the context of the EU Strategy (COM(2012) 286 final) Towards the Eradication of Trafficking in Human Beings.
The study contributes to Priority E Action 2 of the Strategy, which states that ‘the Commission will develop knowledge on the gender dimensions of human trafficking, including the gender consequences of the various forms of trafficking and potential differences in the vulnerability of men and women to victimisation and its impact on them.’ Its specific objectives and tasks are to address: the ‘gender dimension of vulnerability, recruitment, and victimisation’; ‘gender issues related to traffickers and to those creating demand’; and ‘an examination of law and policy responses on trafficking in human beings from a gender perspective’.
The study addresses the five priorities of the EU Strategy: identifying, protecting, and assisting victims of traf-ficking; stepping up the prevention of trafficking in human beings; better law enforcement; enhanced coordination and cooperation among key actors and policy coherence; and increased knowledge of an effective response to emerging concerns.
This study, according to its terms of reference, aims to look specifically at the gender dimension of trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation. This follows evidence from statistical data from Eurostat, as well as da-ta from The European Police Office (Europol) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), accord-ing to which the most reported form of exploitation of victims is that of sexual exploitation and its strong gen-der dimension (96 % women and girls). It further addresses recommendations addressed in the Resolution of the European Parliament of 26 February 2014 on sexual exploitation and prostitution and its impact on gender equality (2013/2103(INI)) urging the European Commission to evaluate the impact that the European legal frame-work designed to eliminate trafficking for sexual exploitation has had to date and to undertake further research on patterns of prostitution, on human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation and on the increased lev-el of sex tourism in the EU, with particular reference to minors, and to promote the exchange of best practices among the Member States.
The study identifies and draws on EU law and policy competence in gender equality in its identification of the gen-der dimensions of trafficking. The gender dimensions are clustered into five issues: gender specificity and equal treatment; gender expertise, gender balance in decision-making and gender mainstreaming; the relationship be-tween prostitution and trafficking; gendered policy fields and strategic priorities; gendered systems and the the-ory of prevention
On the upstream mobility scheme for two-phase flow in porous media
When neglecting capillarity, two-phase incompressible flow in porous media is
modelled as a scalar nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law. A change in the
rock type results in a change of the flux function. Discretizing in
one-dimensional with a finite volume method, we investigate two numerical
fluxes, an extension of the Godunov flux and the upstream mobility flux, the
latter being widely used in hydrogeology and petroleum engineering. Then, in
the case of a changing rock type, one can give examples when the upstream
