Cytotoxicity screening of some Turkish plants against renal cancer cells
In this contribution, we performed cytotoxicity screening of 51 extracts from 17 plant species, representing 14 families growing in Turkey. Cytotoxic activities of the dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of the plants were investigated against the renal (A498 and U031) cancer cell lines. 28 extracts exhibited more than 50% growth inhibition at a 25 ug/mL concentration on both renal cancer A498 and UO31 cell lines. The extracts showed higher activity against UO31 cells than A498 cells. The dichloromethane extract of the aerial parts of Scabiosa columbaria ssp. columbaria showed the highest cytotoxic activity with 64% inhibition at a 25 ug/mL concentration on the renal cancer UO31 cell line. The methanol extract of the aerial parts of Epilobium minutiflorum showed the highest cytotoxic activity with 63% inhibition at a 25 ug/mL concentration on the renal cancer A498 cell line
Stratum corneum lipid liposome-encapsulated panomycocin: preparation, characterization, and the determination of antimycotic efficacy against Candida spp. isolated from patients with vulvovaginitis in an in vitro human vaginal epithelium tissue model
In this study, a liposomal lyophilized powder formulation of panomycocin was developed for therapeutic purposes against vulvovaginal candidiasis which affects 80% of women worldwide. Panomycocin is a potent antimycotic protein secreted by the yeast Wickerhamomyces anomalus NCYC 434. This study involved the preparation of panomycocin-loaded stratum corneum lipid liposomes (SCLLs), characterization of the SCLLs, and determination of antimycotic efficacy of the formulation against Candida albicans and Candida glabrata clinical vaginal isolates in a human vaginal epithelium tissue model. The encapsulation and loading efficiencies of SCLLs were 73% and 76.8%, respectively. In transmission electron microscopy images, the SCLLs appeared in the submicron size range. Dynamic light scattering analyses showed that the SCLLs had uniform size distribution. Zeta potential measurements revealed stable and positively charged SCLLs. In Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses, no irreversible interactions between the encapsulated panomycocin and the SCLLs were detected. The SCLLs retained > 98% of encapsulated panomycocin in aqueous solution up to 12 hours. The formulation was fungicidal at the same minimum fungicidal concentration values for non-formulated pure panomycocin when tested on an in vitro model of vaginal candidiasis. This is the first study in which SCLLs and a protein as an active ingredient have been utilized together in a formulation. The results obtained in this study led us to conduct further preclinical trials of this formulation for the development of an effective topical anti-candidal drug with improved safety
Newborn treated with continuous renal replacement therapy for citrulinemia-type 1
Introduction: Hyperammonemia occurs as a result of the inability to convert ammonia, a metabolic toxin, into urea due to a block in the urea cycle, and there resulting neurotoxicity is responsible for the pathogenesis.
Case Presentation: Our patient was 7 days old when followed up in an external center for 3 days with a preliminary diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Lethargy, vomiting, tachypnea, and convulsions, which are frequently seen in the first neonatal forms of urea cycle disorders, were also present in our patient. He was referred to us as a result of high ammonia levels when he was examined in terms of congenital metabolic diseases. He was intubated due to the rapid development of respiratory failure. When he was admitted to our intensive care unit with hyperammonemia, light reflex could not be obtained, and widespread cutis marmaratus was developed. Continuous renal replacement therapy was started in our patient and administered intermittently for 120 hours. The glucose infusion rate was followed by high fluid. When it orally tolerated, it is supported with sodium benzoate and sodium stearyl fumarate to reduce ammonia. Nutrition was limited to protein with Basic P.
Conclusion: After staying in the intensive care unit for 30 days, our patient was discharged with the recommendation of outpatient follow-up by the pediatric metabolism physician. When our patient came for his check up after two months, there was no nystagmus and no seizures
Baby with neonatal systemic juvenile xanthogranuloma born within a cross-cousin marriage
AbstractJuvenile xanthogranuloma is a non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis seen most commonly in childhood and adolescence. Extracutaneous involvement is rare. We report an interesting and extremely rare case of systemic (skin, lung, spleen, and colon) “juvenile xanthogranuloma” in the neonatal period. Our case was the first ever reported case born to a cross-cousin marriage
Evoluation of childhood poisoning at our hospital

Bulgular: Olguların %80'inin 5 yaşından küçük, erkek/kız oranının 1.2 olduğu saptanmıştır. Zehirlenmelerin
Zehirlenme
olgularının %95.2'si kaza sonucunda meydana gelmiş, %4.8'i istemli ilaç alımı şeklinde olmuştur.
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate childhood poisoning at our hospital and to draw the attention to the increasing incidence of childhood poisoning.
Material and Method: In this retrospective study, the records of 123 cases who were hospitalized due to poisoning between January 1standMay 1stin 1994 were evaluated. Their age, sex, the type of material ingested, initial complaints, hospitalization time, the duration of hospitalization, treatment protocols were investigated.
Results: Eighty percent of cases studied were younger than five years old with a male/female ratio of 1.2. The toxic agents ingested orexposedwere as follows: Drugs 61%, hydrocarbon compound 17%, food7.2%, organic phosphorus 6.5%, ratpoison4%, CO 2.4% and other chemicals 1.7%. Ninety five percent of cases wereexposed to the toxic agents accidentally whereas 4.8 % had ingested onpurpose.
Conclusion: Poisoning is observed more commonly in children younger than five years old. Drugs and hydrocarbon compounds are the most common agents causing childhood poisoning. Keeping children away from these agents canprevent these types of poisoning
Prospective assessment of VI-RADS score in multiparametric MRI in bladder cancer: accuracy and the factors affecting the results
PURPOSEWe aimed to investigate the accuracy of Vesical Imaging - Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) in the detection of muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and to determine which factors affect the results of this scoring system.METHODSA prospective data analysis of 80 patients who were detected to have bladder tumor was performed between March 2019 and October 2020. VI-RADS scoring was used to determine the probability of muscle invasion. The scores were compared with pathological results to evaluate the accuracy of the VI-RADS scoring system. Interobserver agreement was assessed by VI-RADS scoring of 20 randomly chosen patients by a different experienced radiologist.RESULTSUsing the VI-RADS scoring system, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) were 87.5%, 87.5%, 63.6%, and 96.6%, respectively. The interobserver agreement expressed as the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.72 (95% CI: 0.44-0.84, P < .001). In addition, the flat appearance of the tumor was an important factor affecting the accuracy of the VI-RADS score (odds ratio: 5.3 [95% CI: 1.1-27.0] and relative risk: 1.87 [95% CI: 1.24-2.82]).CONCLUSIONThe mpMRI, used in conjunction with VI-RADS, has proven to be an effective imaging method for detecting muscle invasion in cases of bladder cancer. VI-RADS scoring system can distinguish whether there is a muscle-invasive and non-muscle invasive bladder cancer with acceptable accuracy. In addition, the flat appearance of the tumor is an important entity that can affect the accuracy of the VI-RADS scoring system
NON-BLOCKING SUPERVISORY CONTROL FOR INITIALISED RECTANGULAR AUTOMATA
We consider the problem of supervisory control for a class of rectangu-lar automata and more specifically for compact rectangular automata with uniform rectangular activity, i.e. initialised. The supervisory controller is state feedback and disables discrete-event transitions in order to solve the non-blocking forbidden state problem. The non-blocking problem is defined under both strong and weak conditions. For the latter maximally permissive solutions that are computable on a finite quotient space characterised by lan-guage equivalence are derived
Myometrial elasticity determined by elastosonography to predict preterm labor
Sengul, Ilker/0000-0001-5217-0755WOS: 000341928900003PubMed: 24199673Aim: To determine the utility of elastosonography (ES) combined to cervical length measurement to predict preterm labor. Methods: One hundred twenty-seven women with pregnancies between 21 to 36 weeks of gestation without any risk factor for preterm labor were included in the study. All subjects underwent sonographic evaluation including fetal biometry, cervical length measurement and ES of uterine myometrium. Subcutaneous tissue was the reference point for ES evaluation. Tissue strain ratio values were obtained from all patients. Results: Cervical length was a significant predictor for preterm delivery (AUC = 0.958, p4.7 [24.5 (95 CI, 4.1-146.5, p<0.001)] were the risk factors for preterm delivery. Conclusion: Elastosonographic evaluation of uterine myometrium was found to be significantly correlated with cervical length but cervical length measurement is a better predictor for preterm labor than ES
