The level of human occupancy in historic religious buildings influences the internal heat gains and thus the thermal comfort of the users. The temperate climate represents a challenge due to variations in tem- perature and relative humidity throughout the year, which are by no means extreme. Knowledge regard- ing human occupancy in historic religious buildings in temperate climates increases the possibilities of controlling and staying within a given comfort range for the users benefit. The objective was to determine the impact of occupancy on the thermal performance of a historic religious building located in sub-humid temperate climate, to increase the knowledge and to generate opportunities to decrease the excessive use of active systems prevalent today. The objective was approached with a numerical method that included monitoring periods and dynamic simulation to determine a novel passive cooling system that would maintain a determined comfort tem- perature for the longest time in summer. By implementing a novel passive cooling system, the results showed an impact on the operative temperature according to occupancy level, which reduced the cooling degree-hour by 80% and 66% at the upper occupancy with 80% and 90% satisfaction levels, respectively.Universidad de Granada / CBU

Plasticity of Dendritic Spines. Not Only for Cognitive Processes

    Get PDF
Excitatory synaptic transmission is associated with the input of “new” information at synaptic junctions established by dendritic spines. The role that each type of spine plays in the transmission of the synaptic impulses is different. Indeed, there is a close relationship between the shape of spines and the differential processing of the excitatory synaptic information that is relayed to them, influencing in turn the transmission of synaptic information related to several psychoneural processes

Remote operation of CeCi social robot

This paper presents a validation methodology for a remote system with its objective focused on a social robot. The research process starts with the customization of an application for smartphones, achieving a simple method of connection and attachment to the robot. This customization allows remote operation of the robot’s movements and an additional level of autonomy for the displacements in previously known locations. One of several teleoperations methods is the direct teleoperations method, which is used in master–slave control mode via a wireless network. Next, the article focuses on proposing a validation methodology for social robot applications design. Under this approach, two tests are performed to validate the designed application. The first one seeks to find the response speed of the communication between the robot and the mobile device wherein 10 devices with different characteristics and capabilities are used. This test is critical since a delay outside the allowable range invalidates the use of the application. The second test measures the application’s usability through a user survey, which allows for determining the preferences that people may have when using this type of application. This second test is essential to consider the overall acceptability of the social robot.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

La afectación emocional causada por el COVID en estudiantes del área de salud

Covid 19 has caused several difficulties in different areas of life such as economic and social, as well as family and school. This is due to the confinement. Although it has diminished, it has not ended at all. This phenomenon has caused a variety of psychological issues such as depression, sleep disorder, annoyance, panic, among others. There is a set of signs and mood changes that portrays emotional symptoms such as general malaise, excessive worries derived from the changes in home daily life. This work has a quantitative, descriptive, transversal, and non-experimental approach. The sample consists of 211 health area students who has experience negative emotional effects such as worrying of returning to face-to-face classes, fear of losing the school cycle, fear of contagion, tension and anxiety caused by the confinement.

The proceeding at: 22nd International Conference on Plastic Optical Fibers (POF 2013), took place in 2013 September,11-13, in Armação dos Buzios, Rio de Janeiro, (Brasil). The event Web site at: http://www.pof2013.org.br/ .In this work, we report the results obtained during the photo-thermo-mechanical characterization of a PMMA-core plastic optical fiber (POF) through tensile tests. Simultaneous measurements of the received optical power and temperature variation during the deformation process are also reported, analyzing its viability as an intensity-based sensing system. This work has been sponsored by the Spanish Ministries of Economy and Education (grants nº TEC2012-37983-C03-02 and Ref. This proceeding at : 23 rd International Conference en Optical Fiber Sensors (OFS23). Took place in 2014, June, 02-06, in Santander (Spain). In this work, we explore the variation of power losses of PMMA-core plastic optical fiber through tensile tests. Experimental results of received optical power during elastic and plastic deformation process demonstrate the feasibility of POFs as simple intensity-based fiber-optic sensors for Structural Health Monitoring applications beyond complex schemes. A theoretical approach of the POF behavior versus strain is also provided. This work has been sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Economía y Competividad under grant TEC2012-37983-C03-02.Publicad

This paper develops a chronicle of the arise and evolution of a communitarian and intersectional coordination web that for over five years has been looking forward to halt and revert the environmental degradation in San Antón, a urban community located at the shore of the Apatlaco river, one of the main watercourses in Cuernavaca, Morelos, which bears high pollution levels. The paper presents the communitarian development of an autonomous process of management and regulation, related to the local ecosystem in an urban frame. It focuses on socioeconomic institutional change and its possible role in the resolution of coordination failures and the internalization of environmental externalities.San Antón waterfall, local institutional development, water treatment, solid waste, social confidence.
