The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasing
worldwide, mainly due to the increase in women. In developed countries, COPD in
women is mainly a result of exposure to tobacco smoke and in developing countries
to inhalation of biomass combustion products. Underdiagnosis of COPD is more
common in women since this disease has classically been associated with men.
Moreover, COPD in women shows certain differential features, such as a greater
expression of aspects related to perception (dyspnea and health-related quality
of life), a high prevalence of malnutrition, anxiety and depression, and a
distinct distribution of emphysema from that in men. Better phenotypical
characterization of COPD in women would allow its impact on the health system to
be more accurately evaluated and more individualized therapeutic strategies to be
designe
Noise reduction in 3D noncollinear parametric amplifier
We analytically find an approximate Bloch-Messiah reduction of a noncollinear
parametric amplifier pumped with a focused monochromatic beam. We consider type
I phase matching. The results are obtained using a perturbative expansion and
scaled to a high gain regime. They allow a straightforward maximization of the
signal gain and minimization of the parametric fluorescence noise. We find the
fundamental mode of the amplifier, which is an elliptic Gaussian defining the
optimal seed beam shape. We conclude that the output of the amplifier should be
stripped of higher order modes, which are approximately Hermite-Gaussian beams.
Alternatively, the pump waist can be adjusted such that the amount of noise

Magnetic phenomena in 5d transition metal nanowires
We have carried out fully relativistic full-potential, spin-polarized,
all-electron density-functional calculations for straight, monatomic nanowires
of the 5d transition and noble metals Os, Ir, Pt and Au. We find that, of these
metal nanowires, Os and Pt have mean-field magnetic moments for values of the
bond length at equilibrium. In the case of Au and Ir, the wires need to be
slightly stretched in order to spin polarize. An analysis of the band
structures of the wires indicate that the superparamagnetic state that our
calculations suggest will affect the conductance through the wires -- though
not by a large amount -- at least in the absence of magnetic domain walls. It
should thus lead to a characteristic temperature- and field dependent
conductance, and may also cause a significant spin polarization of the

IL-6 and TNF-alpha polymorphisms in portuguese psoriatic patients
Introduction: Cytokines regulate the growth, function and differentiation of cells and help to steer immune response and inflammation. In this study we focused our attention in two proinflammatory cytokines: IL-6 and TNFa. It is known that their overexpression is responsible for initiation, maintenance and recurrence of skin lesions in psoriatic patients. Therefore, it is important to investigate genetic biomarkers with functional effects in the genes of those cytokines that could help to predict the severity of Psoriasis.
Objectives: To investigate the hypothesis that allelic variants in IL-6 and TNF-a genes are a risk factor for the developing of severe Psoriasis.
Materials and Methods: A cohort of 178 (74 females, 104 males) psoriatic patients with severe plaque type psoriasis [according to the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI)] and 206 healthy individuals were selected. Several polymorphisms in the IL-6 gene (rs1800795, rs1800796, rs2069827, rs2069840) and TNF-a (rs361525, rs1799964, rs1800629) promoter region were genotyped. SNP genotyping was performed using Mass Spectrometry (MassARRAY iPLEX–Sequenom).
Results: We observed a lower frequency in the minor allele (C) of the TNFa rs1799964 SNP in psoriatic patients, compared with controls [(21.9% vs. 29.4%), p = 0.02, OR = 0.675 (0.49–0.94)]. The frequency of the CC genotype in patients was 3.93% while in the healthy control group it was 9.22% [(p = 0.04, OR = 0.403 (0.17–0.98)]. No statistical significant differences were found in the other polymorphisms.
Conclusion: Our data suggest that the rs1799964 C allele could be a protective factor for developing severe psoriasis. These results were similar to the findings of Gallo et al (2012) in a Spanish population. The mechanism to explain this association remains elusive, given the lack of evidence of a functional association
Quantum spiral bandwidth of entangled two-photon states
We put forward the concept of quantum spiral bandwidth of the spatial mode
function of the two-photon entangled state in spontaneous parametric
downconversion. We obtain the bandwidth using the eigenstates of the orbital
angular momentum of the biphoton states, and reveal its dependence with the
length of the down converting crystal and waist of the pump beam. The
connection between the quantum spiral bandwidth and the entropy of entanglement

Mass-luminosity relation for FGK main sequence stars: metallicity and age contributions
The stellar mass-luminosity relation (MLR) is one of the most famous
empirical "laws", discovered in the beginning of the 20th century. MLR is still
used to estimate stellar masses for nearby stars, particularly for those that
are not binary systems, hence the mass cannot be derived directly from the
observations. It's well known that the MLR has a statistical dispersion which
cannot be explained exclusively due to the observational errors in luminosity
(or mass). It is an intrinsic dispersion caused by the differences in age and
chemical composition from star to star. In this work we discuss the impact of
age and metallicity on the MLR. Using the recent data on mass, luminosity,
metallicity, and age for 26 FGK stars (all members of binary systems, with
observational mass-errors <= 3%), including the Sun, we derive the MLR taking
into account, separately, mass-luminosity, mass-luminosity-metallicity, and
mass-luminosity-metallicity-age. Our results show that the inclusion of age and
metallicity in the MLR, for FGK stars, improves the individual mass estimation

First-Principles Study on Peierls Instability in Infinite Single-Row Al Wires
We present the relation between the atomic and spin-electronic structures of
infinite single-row atomic wires made of Al atoms during their elongation using
first-principles molecular-dynamics simulations. Our study reveals that the
Peierls transition indeed occurs in the wire with magnetic ordering: it
ruptures to form a trimerized structure with antiferromagnetic ordering and
changes from a conductor to an insulator just before forming a linear wire of
equally-spaced atoms. The formation of the trimerized wire is discussed in
terms of the behavior of the -symmetry bands of the Al wire.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Presentación, clasificación y evolución de los pacientes con carcinoma hepatocelular en un centro de Veracruz, México
ResumenAntecedentesLa estadificación en el carcinoma hepatocelular (CHC) otorga pronóstico y orientación terapéutica. La resección y el trasplante hepático son opciones curativas y las terapias de ablación se aplican a pacientes que no reciben tratamiento curativo. La sobrevida tras la resección hepática o terapias de ablación es variada.ObjetivoDescribir la presentación, la estadificación, el manejo y la evolución de los pacientes con CHC en nuestro centro.Pacientes y métodosCuarenta y dos pacientes fueron seguidos prospectivamente durante 7 años. La sobrevida se calculó mediante Kaplan-Meier y log-rank entre los sistemas de estadificación (Okuda, BCLC y CLIP) y tipos de tratamiento (resección hepática, ablación por radiofrecuencia y ningún tratamiento quirúrgico).ResultadosLa edad media ± desviación estándar de los pacientes fue 68,9 ± 9,5 años; el 57% fueron mujeres y el 54% cirróticos. El 31% tenía infección por VHC. El tamaño medio del tumor fue 6.48 ± 2.52cm. Los estadios CLIP 0, Okuda I y BCLC A tuvieron mejor sobrevida que otros estadios (p<0.05). La resección tuvo mejor sobrevida (mediana: 32 meses y sobrevida a 1, 3 y 5 años del 83, el 39 y 19.7%) que ablación por radiofrecuencia (25 meses, y el 90 y el 17.2% a 1 y 3 años) y que ningún tratamiento quirúrgico (1 año<5%) (p<0.05).ConclusiónLos pacientes con CHC en nuestro centro al igual que otra población en México son diagnosticados tardíamente. El pronóstico usando CLIP y BCLC es similar a la literatura. Los mejores resultados se observaron en estadios tempranos y los que tuvieron resección quirúrgica del CHC.AbstractBackgroundHepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) staging provides a basis for calculating disease prognosis and therapeutic guidance. Liver resection and transplantation are curative options, and ablation therapies are applied to patients that are not candidates for curative treatment. Survival after liver resection or ablation therapies varies.AimsTo describe the presentation, staging, management, and outcome in patients with HCC in our center.Patients and methodsForty-two patients had a 7-year prospective follow-up. Survival was calculated with the Kaplan-Meier analysis and the log-rank test was used for its comparison between the staging systems (Okuda, BCLC, and CLIP) and types of treatment (liver resection, radiofrequency ablation, and no surgical treatment).ResultsThe mean age of the patients was 68.9 ± 9.5 years; 57% were women. A total of 54% of the patients presented with cirrhosis and 31% were infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). The mean tumor size was 6.48 ± 2.52cm. The CLIP 0, Okuda I, and BCLC A stages had better survival rates than the other stages (P<0.05). Survival with resection was superior (median of 32 months and survival at 1, 3, and 5 years of 83, 39, and 19.7%, respectively) to that of both radiofrequency ablation (median of 25 months and survival at 1 and 3 years of 90 and 17.2%, respectively) and no surgical treatment (1 year < 5%) (P<0.05).ConclusionThe patients at our center were diagnosed at late stages of HCC, as is the case in other Mexican populations. Outcome in relation to CLIP and BCLC was similar to the prognoses reported in the literature. The best results were observed in the patients with early stage disease and those that underwent HCC resection surgery

Indexación: Scopus.Pharmacogenomics is an emergent field aimed at tailoring pharmacological therapy. Genetic polymorphisms can modify the expression and function of enzymes and proteins involved in drug metabolism, affecting absorption, distribution, biotransformation and excretion as well as the drug-target interaction. Therefore, the presence of allelic variants will classify people as poor, extensive or rapid/ultra rapid metabolizers, modifying drug efficacy and safety. In this work, the state of art in relation to this discipline is presented and the genetic variants of enzymes that are involved in drug pharmacokinetics or pharmacodynamics are described.
