Hodge decomposition for Cousin groups and for Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds

    Get PDF
We compute the Dolbeault cohomology of certain domains contained in Cousin groups defined by lattices which satisfy a strong dispersiveness condition. As a consequence we obtain a description of the Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds and in particular the fact that the Hodge decomposition holds for their cohomology.Comment: Minor expository change

Therapeutic approach for Amyand’s hernia; a case report

    Get PDF
In very few cases stated in the literature, the vermiform appendix might be contained in a hernial sac. This distinctive pathology is described as Amyand\u27s hernia and has the very small occurrence of about 1%. We report the case of a 62-year-old man that presented for a reducible tumoral mass located in the right inguinal region. Amyand’s hernia was the intraoperative diagnostic. We performed hernioplasty (using the Lichtenstein tension-free mesh repair with a composite polypropylene mesh) without appendectomy. This case matches the type 1 Lossanoff and Basson’s classification and has no facile management. Due to the clinical specificities of each case that presents with defining features of an Amyand’s hernia, surgical management depends on the recommendations stated in the literature, as well as the surgeon’s judgment based on experience

Diabetes mellitus and necrotizing fasciitis – a deadly combination; case report

    Get PDF
Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly destructive affliction of soft tissues, with a mortality rate that may reach 73% of the cases. It is characterized by a progressive inflammation and extended necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and the fascia. Necrotizing fasciitis was first described in 1848, and later in 1920 Meleney identified 20 patients in China in which the infection was presumably triggered by hemolytic streptococcus, linking pathological bacteria to the condition. In 1952, Wilson coined the term necrotizing fasciitis although without successfully identifying the specific pathological bacteria involved. In most cases, both risk and aggravating factors are present, the main risk factors being diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, renal failure, and immunosuppressant states. Location may vary, but most frequently the disease occurs in the limbs, the trunk, and the perineum. Treatment depends on the location and the time of diagnosis and may range from large incisions with extensive debridement to organ amputations such as those of the limbs or breasts. Treatment is complex and expensive, and besides surgery, includes the administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, intensive therapy support, and long-term hospitalizations. The prognosis is guarded. The present case entails a 56-year old female patient who presented with many risk factors favoring the occurrence of necrotizing fasciitis, namely diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis (decompensated with ascites and portal encephalopathy phenomena), untreated hepatitis B infection, chronic renal failure with diabetic nephrotic syndrome, and obesity

Peace and Security Funding Index: An Analysis of Global Foundation Grantmaking - 2018 Edition

This research centers around a framework of three overarching categories that support activities to prevent future conflict, resolve existing conflict, and support stability and resiliency. The three categories are further broken down into 24 issue areas that more precisely describe funding for peace and security

Peace and Security Funding Index: An Analysis of Global Foundation Grantmaking

The Peace and Security Funding Index: An Analysis of Global Foundation Grantmaking is a first-of-its-kind research project that showcases the foundations and philanthropists dedicated to building a safer, more peaceful and prosperous global future. These funders are investing in efforts to prevent, mitigate, and resolve conflict and to rebuild after conflict. From research on stopping nuclear terrorism to citizen journalism in Egypt, peace and security funders are supporting peace, justice, diplomacy, and dialogue in a variety of ways. In 2013, the latest year data is available, 288 foundations supported over 1,200 organizations with more than $283 million spread across nearly 2,000 grants. The Peace and Security Funders Group (PSFG) and Foundation Center created the Index to help funders, policymakers, and the general public better understand the peace and security funding landscape. The Index identifies who "peace and security" funders are, what issues they fund (e.g., cybersecurity, preventing genocide and atrocities, climate security), where they focus (i.e., specific regions or countries), and how they make an impact (e.g., through public education efforts, journalism, research)

The Semantics and Pragmatics of an Old Romanian Expression: “a se duce la Cucuiata”

    Get PDF
This paper analyses, from a semantic and pragmatic perspective, the meaning of an old Romanian phraseological unit a se duce la Cucuiata, thus providing insights into the archaic Romanian mentality and cultural patterns. Originating from the word cucui (bump), cucuiata was used to designate an elevated plot of land. The expression included, initially, a euphemistic reference to death, as archaic burial places were usually located on hills, and constituted a linguistic device mirroring the reluctance to deal with human mortality in an undeviating way. However, the connotations of the expression have changed in contemporary Romanian language, to refer to a secluded, distant place, far from civilization, often a symbol of lack of education and limited understanding of the world (pejorative meaning). To reveal the present-day uses of this word, the paper examines and interprets contexts taken from the virtual environment

THE IMPORTANCE OF EMPLOYMENT AND WORKFORCE EDUCATION IN THE CONTEXT OF ACHIEVING THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS OF THE 2030 AGENDA

    Get PDF
Some of the most important priorities of the 2030 Agenda are employment and education. These are seen as key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in relation to poverty and social inequalities. Education and training can ensure better job opportunities and higher wages, as well as improved quality of life and well-being. In this article we aim to carry out a statistical analysis of employment and education using appropriate research methods. The aim of this analysis is to identify current trends and assess progress towards achieving the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda in employment and education. To carry out this analysis, we will use available national and international statistical data and appropriate research methods, which will help us to identify the factors influencing employment and education and to assess the effectiveness of existing policies. We will analyse labour force participation rates in different sectors of the economy, as well as differences in employment, unemployment and other elements of employment. We will use this data to identify current needs and trends and to develop policies and programs that support decent employment and quality education. At the same time, we will conduct a statistical analysis of education, access to education and also identify gender or age differences in access to education
