Optimality of Candela’s concrete shells: a study of his posthumous design

In the field of concrete shells it is possible to distinguish two periods, an initial constructive period that includes many structures erected until the 1970s, and the second phase directed mainly at analysis, due to the development in computing processors and the increasing use of methods of computational mechanics. This paper offers a brief review of the constructive time, focusing on the most emblematic works of Félix Candela, the centenary of whose birth is celebrated in 2010. Moreover, optimization techniques are applied to find some optimum geometric designs of an actual concrete shell – the posthumous work of Candela – presenting an aesthetic appearance similar to that which the designer had initially planned. The results confirm that improvements in the structural behaviour may be achieved with slight geometric changes

Transition metal complexes with functionalized silyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl and related ligands: synthesis and reactivity

Interest in modifying transition metal complexes using substituted cyclopentadienyl rings has been stimulated in the last years by their potential synthetic and catalytic applications in different processes. This review will feature mono- and dicyclopentadienyl-transition metal complexes containing silyl-cyclopentadienyl and related indenyl and fluorenyl ligands. All of these compounds contain silyl-substituted functionalities which are able to coordinate the metal center or used to introduce such a type of ligating moieties. The synthesis and chemical behaviour of these types of compounds are strongly emphasized. Compounds discussed are all those containing silicon-bound substituents which include: (a) hydrosilyl (Si–H); (b) halosilyl (Si–X); oxosilyl (Si–O); (c) amino– and amido–silyl (Si–N); (d) alkyl– and alkenyl–silyl (Si–C) and (d) boron–silyl (Si–B) compounds. Shape and size optimisation of concrete shells

Optimisation techniques may be effective in finding alternative geometries of shell structures to improve their mechanical behaviour, particularly avoiding or reducing the bending moments. This paper shows how the field of use of computers may be widened using these techniques in the design of concrete shells, allowing the user to obtain optimum designs complying with the design conditions. Some optimum geometric designs of an actual concrete shell were found, presenting an aesthetic appearance similar to that initially planned by the designer. The results confirm that significant improvements in the structural behaviour may be achieved with only slight geometric changes

Design of reinforcement for concrete co-planar shell structures using optimization techniques

The absence of universally accepted solutions for the design of reinforcement in plates and shells in the structural concrete codes, and the constant development of computers combined with powerful numerical methods, reveal the need for a standard procedure to calculate the required reinforcement in thin elements subject to membrane and flexural forces. In the present study, the amount of reinforcement is optimized locally for each finite element of the mesh that models the geometry of the problem. Se recogen aquí unos datos arqueológicos de gran interés para orientar la definición histórica del monasterio de Albelda, muy conocido desde siempre sobre todo por sus manuscritos, conservados hoy en El Escorial. El autor, natural del pueblo, fue cura párroco durante los años cruciales para el tema que nos ocupa ya que la vieja iglesia hubo de ser demolida y reconstruida bajo su responsabilidad. Se proporcionan algunas noticias que no solo habrán de ser tenidas en cuenta para una redefinición de la historia del cenobio sino también son claves para ulteriores investigaciones que hayan de hacerse en todo el solar en el que debieron estar localizadas las construcciones de época antigua

Propuesta didáctica sobre nutrición en educación primaria basada en experiencias significativas

Curs acadèmic: 2018/2019La asignatura de ciencias naturales en las escuelas es una de las más problemáticas en cuanto se trata de hacer comprender a los alumnos y alumnas los contenidos curriculares, posiblemente provocado por no utilizar las metodologías adecuadas ni tener en cuenta las ideas previas y las preguntas que se hace el alumnado sobre lo que les rodea. En estas ciencias escolares se debe buscar, por encima de todo, potenciar la curiosidad, la observación, la investigación y el cuestionamiento sobre todo aquello que les rodea, ya que dará lugar a aprendizajes mucho más significativos. En este trabajo se han analizado algunas investigaciones sobre las dificultades que se encuentran en las clases de ciencias, tanto en docentes como en alumnado, con la intención de ofrecer herramientas que sirvan para mejorar el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje actual. Por ello, también se han creado tres secuencias didácticas de diferentes niveles para la enseñanza de la nutrición en todas las etapas de primaria con el fin de ofrecer una ayuda a otros docentes que quieran innovar y centrar las clases de ciencias naturales en el contexto, la experimentación y la investigación. Los niños y las niñas son curiosos por naturaleza y debemos aprovechar esta característica al máximo, utilizando metodologías donde ellos sean los protagonistas y los conceptos tengan sentido dentro de lo que vive el niño o la niña en su día a día.At school, the subject of natural sciences is one of the most problematic ones in terms of making students understand the course contents, probably due to the usage of inadequate methodologies or the fact of not taking into account the students’ previous ides and questions asked about their surroundings. When teaching these sciences, teachers must seek, above all, to enhance curiosity, observation, research and the questioning about everything that surrounds them as these will lead to a much more significant learning. In the present dissertation, different studies about the difficulties found in science classes, both in teachers and students, have been analyzed with the intention of offering tools that serve to improve the current teaching-learning process. Therefore, it has also been created three didactic sequences of different levels for the teaching of nutrition in all the stages of primary school, in order to offer help to other teachers who want to innovate and focus the natural sciences classes in the context, experimentation and research. Children are curious by nature and we must make the most of this characteristic by using methodologies where they are the protagonists and where the concepts make sense within what the child lives in their everyday life
