Fast Authentication in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

    Get PDF
The growing diffusion of wireless devices is leading to an increasing demand for mobility and security. At the same time, most applications can only tolerate short breaks in the data flow, so that it is a challenge to find out mobility and authentication methods able to cope with these constraints. This paper aims to propose an authentication scheme which significantly shortens the authentication latency and that can be deployed in a variety of wireless environments ranging from common Wireless LANs (WLANs) to satellite-based access networks

Completion of isoniazid preventive therapy and factors associated with non-completion in an antiretroviral therapy-naive HIV-infected cohort in Cape Town by Tolu Oni.

includes bibliographic references.TB incidence in South Africa remains high, despite high rates of successful treatment suggesting ongoing transmission and a large reservoir of latently infected persons. Isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) is recommended as preventive therapy in HIV-infected persons. However, implementation has been slow, impeded by barriers and challenges including the fear of non-adherence. A protocol was therefore written to conduct a study to measure IPT completion rates and evaluate predictors of non-completion of a six-month IPT course in Khayelitsha, an informal township in Cape Town. Prior to data analysis, a structured literature review was conducted to assess available evidence particularly from high-burden settings on IPT completion rates and factors associated with loss to follow up

Rethinking techno-social interaction(s) through the lens of technorealists

Societies are on the way to becoming smarter every day by following, copying, and observing one another; the increase of knowledge is already accelerating, but do we know what all of us know? Or more critically, are we able to benefit from everything one has learned? The literature normatively postulates techno-social interactions to be a multi-motivated and multi-consequential phenomenon driven by imbalances in economic, social, cultural, and political situations (non-philosophical facts). Nevertheless, the literature has not highlighted its modern sociological assumptions; it acts as a Techno-utopianist (Nietzschean thoughts) or at least as a dominated technological-determinist (Giant wishes). In this sense, this study takes a different approach to analyzing techno-social interactions using the principles of Technorealism to discuss the issues that concern Technorealists. This paper argues that Technorealists wish to break loose from being pure modern technophiles whose revolts, freedoms, and passions are governed by techno-social struggles. The paper shall metaphorically envisage the extent to which current and future controllers should be avoided without taking any peculiar postmodern moral objective (e.g., stop surveillance governance).Günümüz toplumları birbirlerini takip ederek, gözlemleyerek, kopyalayarak her gün daha akıllı olma yolundalar; bilgi artışı zaten hızlanıyor ama hepimizin ne bildiğini biliyor muyuz?

Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that parents should be counseled and orientated about the advantages of allowing their wards choose the careers they have interest in.Keywords: Peer Pressure; Career Choice; parental influenc

I Saw the Signs: The Role of American Sign Language in Preventing Violence against deaf Youth

    Get PDF
The American Deaf community, comprised of approximately 500,000 people, has developed into a sociolinguistic, cultural community with American Sign Language (ASL) at its center. ASL is the autonomous language of Deaf individuals in America complete with its own grammar, orthography, syntax, and morphology. ASL is capable of conveying complex emotions and abstract ideas. However, most deaf children remain unable to express their innermost feelings because they live in homes with hearing parents who do not speak their language. For many deaf children, this is their first experience with isolation, but it is one they will grow familiar with as they advance from elementary school to high school. With years of isolation as a foundation, many deaf children are more susceptible to dangerous figures such as human traffickers and domestic abusers who target already isolated children and isolate them further, physically and psychologically. In various survivor accounts of human trafficking and domestic violence, isolation was central to them all. But, in the hands of a hearing parent, ASL is the best weapon against isolation because it closes the language gap that initially caused that isolation. With isolation eradicated from the lives of American deaf children, and therefore one risk factor removed, deaf children are one step closer to living safer lives free of sexual violence

“O to Gee” (Enough Is Enough), An Exploratory Sociological Analysis of a Political Campaign Slogan in Nigeria

    Get PDF
All over the world, politicians fancy up their language in a special way to give extract effect and force to their message to the electorate in order to achieve their objective of winning more votes. This language can be embodied in rhetoric, propaganda, promise, colloquialism, word coinages, pidginized and figurative expressions. Attractive political slogans are used by political leaders to inspire and set the mood of public about a particular issues. It is argued that a specific characteristic of political slogans make them the prime instrument for government communication, but at the same time the same characteristic make them the most vulnerable instrument as well. Political campaign slogan has continued to play an important roles in voter’s education and enlightenment in Nigeria. The electorates have witnessed many political campaign slogans such as “one nation, one destiny” of late Shehu Shagari led National Party of Nigeria (NPN), “Hope” of the Late MKO Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Gbais bee (take it there) of the “Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, “change” of Mohammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) and Power to the Peoples of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, none of these political slogans have a more devasting effect in capturing the mood of the electorates as the “O to gee” (Enough is enough) in Kwara State. Thus, this paper utilized secondary sources of data to interrogate the effect of political campaign slogan in Nigeria with specific reference to Kwara state gubernatorial election conducted in 2019, as evident in the dismantling of the twenty-eight (28)years old famous and powerful Saraki’s political dynasty in the state. It was observed that man as a political and social animals engages in the practice of politics as a social and noble activity to express his political agenda either positively or negatively. Therefore, the paper concluded with some recommendations that if political campaign slogan is well-structured, it is capable of being an effective tool for driving government policies, ensuring mass participation of citizenry in political activities, electioneering process and aiding an election of popular candidates with attractive manifestoes at the poll.&nbsp

Multiscale structural, thermal and thermo-structural optimization towards three-dimensional printable structures

This thesis develops a robust framework for the multiscale design of three-dimensional lattices with macroscopically tailored structural and thermal characteristics. The work exploits the high process flexibility and precision of additive manufacturing to the physical realization of complex microstructure of metamaterials by developing and implementing a multiscale approach. Structures derived from such metamaterials exhibit properties which differ from that of the constituent base material. Inspired by the concept of Free Material Optimization (FMO), a periodic microscale model is developed whose geometric parameterization enables smoothly changing properties and for which the connectivity of neighbouring microstructures in the large-scale domain is guaranteed by slowly changing large-scale descriptions of the lattice parameters. The microscale model is evaluated at full factorial design points to discretely populate material property spaces. A property point is fully defined for a micro-architecture when its elasticity matrix, thermal conductivity matrix and volume fraction is determined. The process of property-space population is facilitated by leveraging the existence of micro-architecture symmetries so that there exists a 95% reduction in the simulations required despite a full-factorial design of experiments. The discrete property evaluations are converted to continuous functions by response surface modelling so that the properties exist as continuous functions of the micro-architecture geometry parameters. A lattice-based functional grading of material is derived using the finite element method. The optimization is driven by a chain-rule combination of sensitivities derived by the adjoint method and sensitivities derived from explicit material property expressions. The novelty of the work lies in the use of multiple geometry-based small-scale design parameters for optimization problems in three-dimensional real space. The approach is demonstrated by solving structural, thermal and thermo-structural optimization problems. The results show designs with improved optimality compared to commonly implemented optimization methodologies. The optimal designs obtained are physically realizable by additive manufacturing techniques.Open Acces
