Adolf Portmann: the expressive function of technique

This essay focuses on the topic of technique in the thought of the well-known biologist, zoologist and anthropologist Adolf Portmann (1897-1982). First of all I’ll try to understand the biological and anthropological roots, that make a naturally-artificial (namely technical) being of a man. Then I’ll examine what kind of role and weight Portmann assignes to the technique, underlining risks and chances, closely linked to it, and showing the essentially expressive and self-expressive function of it. Finally I’ll specify the relationship between the development of technique in our society and the loss of the primary world: the aesthetic world of imagination

The intervention starts from an anti-Cartesian epistemological turn that took place in the 1900s. Compared to the classic separation of subject / object, over the course of the century of globalization, there has been a progressive introduction of the subject: in physics, biology, medicine, etc. Particularly in medicine, this entailed a reconsideration of the doctor-patient relationship, which led to a transformation of the "paternalistic relationship" into a relationship of "therapeutic alliance", but also to a "defensive attitude" towards the patient. Something similar, in our opinion, is happening with the introduction of the subject in teaching. This involves a changed relationship between teacher and learner and a reconsideration of the discipline, in particular of philosophy. The attempt is to understand which philosophy and which learning, in this changed context, is possible or desirable

Il contagio e la cura. Il mondo dopo il virus

Per superare la pandemia non dobbiamo augurarci che scompaia, bensì che si faccia endemica: non che se ne vada, ma che, assimilata – alla lettera: “resa simile a noi” –, non se ne vada più. È il modo stesso di procedere della vita. Da questo paradosso sorge una considerazione: lungi dall’identificarsi senz’altro con la salute, la vita sembra invece intrecciare con l’elemento del contagio – e del suo lato positivo, ossia la perdita di una fantasmatica “purezza”, ciò che può anche dirsi nel senso dell’inevitabilità dell’ibridazione – un rapporto necessario, ineludibile. Tuttavia, se questo è vero, allora bisognerà affermare che altrettanto necessario è, per la vita, il rapporto con la cura. Il senso della vita, se mai ve ne è uno, sembra dunque giocarsi all’interno di questa relazione triadica tra la vita stessa, il contagio, e la cura. In effetti, molti indizi sembrerebbero andare proprio in questa direzione. Parliamo ad esempio di comunicazione “virale”, ma la comunicazione è anche un fondamentale modo di prendersi cura delle relazioni; e il virus, che ha gettato il mondo intero nella crisi, può anche generare quella spinta verso una rinnovata cura verso il pianeta capace di far finalmente germinare un futuro non soltanto nuovo, ma anche diverso, ossia eticamente orientato
