An Experimental Study of Adaptive Control for Evolutionary Algorithms
The balance of exploration versus exploitation (EvE) is a key issue on
evolutionary computation. In this paper we will investigate how an adaptive
controller aimed to perform Operator Selection can be used to dynamically
manage the EvE balance required by the search, showing that the search
strategies determined by this control paradigm lead to an improvement of
solution quality found by the evolutionary algorithm

An Adaptive Neural Network Approach To Predict The Capital Adequacy Ratio
Financial institutions, policy makers and regulatory authorities need to implement stress tests in order to test both resilience and the consequences of adverse shocks. The European Central Bank and the European Banking Authority regularly conduct these tests, whose importance is more and more evident after the financial crisis of 2007-2008. The stress tests’ nonlinear features of variables and scenarios triggered the need of general and robust strategies to perform this task. In this paper we want to introduce an adaptive Neural Network approach to predict the Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), which is one of the main ratios monitored to retrieve useful information along many stress test procedures. The Neural Network approach is based on a comparison between feed-forward and recurrent networks, and is run after a meaningful pre-processing operations definition. Results show that our approach is able to successfully predict CAR by using both Neural Networks and recurrent networks
A metaheuristic multi-criteria optimisation approach to portfolio selection
Portfolio selection is concerned with selecting from of a universe of assets the ones in which one wishes to invest and the amount of the investment. Several criteria can be used for portfolio selection, and the resulting approaches can be classified as being either active or passive. The two approaches are thought to be mutually exclusive, but some authors have suggested combining them in a unified framework. In this work, we define a multi-criteria optimisation problem in which the two types of approaches are combined, and we introduce a hybrid metaheuristic that combines local search and quadratic programming to obtain an approximation of the Pareto set. We experimentally analyse this approach on benchmarks from two different instance classes: these classes refer to the same indexes, but they use two different return representations. Results show that this metaheuristic can be effectively used to solve multi-criteria portfolio selection problems. Furthermore, with an experiment on a set of instances coming from a different financial scenario, we show that the results obtained by our metaheuristic are robust with respect to the return representation used

Recognized in 1994 as a global emergency by the World Health Organization, tuberculosis (TB) remains an ongoing health threat. In Cameroon, the mortality rate is estimated at 2.9%. Treatment of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) defined as the resistance to the two most effective antiTB drugs, and requires therapy of more than 7 drugs taken on a daily basis during 9-12 months. This study aimed to evaluate the safety profile of treatment regimens used for MDR-TB at Jamot Hospital of Yaounde (JHY). This was a retrospective cohort study of patients treated for MDR-TB at HJY from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2019. Patients characteristics of the cohort, drugs regimen were collected and described. All possible adverse drug reactions (ADR) were described clinically and by severity grade. During the study period, 107 patients were included, and 96 (89.7%) experienced at least one ADR. Most parts of the patients (90) experienced mild or moderate ADR. Hearing loss was the most frequent ADR, and led mostly in aminoglycosides dose reduction (n = 30, 96.7%). Gastrointestinal events were commonly observed during the study period. Our findings suggested that ototoxicity was a prominent safety issue during the study period. The implementation of the new short treatment regimen could be effective in reducing the burden of ototoxicity among MDR-TB patients. Nevertheless, new safety issues could emerge.European programme in Pharmacovigilance and Pharmacoepidemiolog

Art festivals in Oregon : historic and geographic aspects
The arts and festivals of art have today become a vital economic
force in some areas of the country and a way of life for some people.
The number and sizes of festivals, as well as audience size, has
grown tremendously both nationally and in Oregon, since 1950. Even
the federal government has begun to be involved to various extents.
Art festivals are an important source of information about the
needs, values, and interests of an increasing number of people in our
society. Art festivals, as a form of outdoor recreation, have spatial
as well as time dimensions, hence they carry certain implications for
parks and recreation programs, urban planning, as well as recreational
land use planning, and man's crucial adjustment and ability to
cope with increasing leisure time.
By means of a literature review, the researcher examined art
festivals in context of the nationwide arts movement to gain an understanding of the historical process. For the sake of perspective, the literature on mass culture, the relationship of arts and crafts to state
and county fairs, and to leisure were likewise reviewed. Then,
focusing on art festivals in Oregon, mail questionnaires were sent out
to all cities in Oregon known to have held such festivals in the last
three decades, and personal interviews were conducted with 188
spectators at art festivals held in the Willamette Valley, 1975
The researcher found a steady increase in numbers of festivals
held in Oregon, quadrupling from 1950-1960, and doubling from 1960-1976. Site or location was one of the most important factors in attracting
people, as well as the key element in explaining the distribution of
art festivals. Interviewees placed great importance on close-to-home
recreation, non-activity (i. e. not '1doing") recreation, and the factor
of being outdoors. Naturalness of the site as well as density of the
recreational experience were found to be directly opposite to the traditional
planning values for judging quality recreation.
It is concluded that professionals in the arts, parks, and
planning fields need to join forces; that the federal government should
support recreational arts and their open space needs on a national
scale, rather than just around Washington, D. C.; and that urban
governments could and should make more space available for events
such as art festivals in close -to -home neighborhood settings since the
greatest need of the immediate present and future is for the provision
of recreation and recreational space for all people, not just the young or the physically and economically able. The need is also seen for
city and park planning to be more imaginatively and sensitively aware
of behavioral needs in recreation, than has been the case in the past.
Team effort or interagency co-operation is seen as the answer to a
more foresightful setting aside of the necessary space for the future.
Mentally, new attitudes and definitions, as well as outlooks need
to be encouraged among urban planners and recreationists. Physically,
parks, per se, are not considered necessary for art festivals, but open
space is (preferably for permanent rather than just temporary use).
With an increasing urban population, it is concluded that the needs of
the future lie in urban areas, hence the challenge and opportunities for
change will rest heavily with city and regional governments, with planners
and park-recreation departments. But ultimately responsibility
lies with the taxpayers themselves, who must give their monetary
support and must not be satisfied with anything less than imaginative
new plans for close-to-home recreation and leisure
Analytic Hierarchy Process for classes of economic behavior in the context of intertemporal choices
Due to the major crises of the past decade, the need to introduce consumer profiling operations to protect individuals from committing superficial business transactions has been realized in 2014/65/EU Directive. The present paper investigates how consumer behavioral attitudes influence the decision-making process so that the choice results, from a normative point of view, non-rational in the context of intertemporal choice. In addition, the particular focus by European institutions on closing the gender gap in the economic and financial sector motivated this research to enrich the analysis with gender assessments. The study of the relationship between cognitive characteristics and consumer decision making are deepened with a multidisciplinary approach involving mathematics, behavioral finance, temperament theory and multi-criteria analysis. The results of an experimental investigation confirm that there is not a better temperament or a more adept gender in economic and financial choices
Distance measures for Portfolio Selection
The classical Markowitz approach to the portfolio selection problem (PSP) consists of selecting the portfolio that minimises the return variance for a given level of expected return. By solving the problem for different values of this expected return we obtain the Pareto efficient frontier, which is composed of non-dominated portfolios. The final user has to discriminate amongst these points by resorting to an external criterion in order to decide which portfolio to invest in. We propose to define an external portfolio that corresponds to a desired criterion, and to assess its distance from the Markowitz frontier in market allowing for short-sellings or not. We show that this distance is able to give us useful information about out-of-sample performances. The pursued objective is to provide an operational method for discriminating amongst non-dominated portfolios considering the investors\u2019 preference
