MEDICINE IN CROATIAN LEXICOGRAPHY AND ENCYCLOPAEDISTICS

Dok je uloga medicine, posebice humane medicine, u životu čovjeka neupitna, autori žele ispitati koje je značenje medicini posvećeno u hrvatskoj leksikografiji i enciklopedici. Prikazan je razvoj medicinske leksikografije i enciklopedike u Hrvatskoj od začetaka u 16. stoljeću do danas, s posebnim naglaskom na djelatnost Leksikografskoga zavoda Miroslav Krleža (LZMK), kao jedine hrvatske institucije koja se sustavno bavi leksikografijom i enciklopedikom već sedamdesetak godina. Položaj i važnost medicine utvrdili su se kronološkim prikazom zastupljenosti medicinskih naziva i tema u djelima hrvatske leksikografije i enciklopedike od 16. do 19. stoljeća, sistematiziranjem i analizom medicinskih izdanja iz 20. stoljeća, posebice onih LZMK-a, te pregledom zastupljenosti medicine u ostalim izdanjima LZMK-a, s naglaskom na Hrvatsku enciklopediju. Pokazalo se da je medicina u značajnoj mjeri bila zastupljena u hrvatskim leksikografskim i enciklopedijskim djelima koja su imala važnu ulogu u usustavljivanju hrvatske medicinske terminologije i spoznaja iz područja medicine. Autori zaključuju da su leksikografija i enciklopedika u Hrvatskoj zadovoljavajuće pratile zanimanje stručne, ali i šire zajednice za medicinu, odnosno medicinske teme.Due to the undeniable importance of medicine in human life, the authors explore the level of attentiveness given to medical topics since the beginnings of Croatian lexicography and encyclopaedistics in the 16th century until today. Specific emphasis is put on the activities of the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography, as the only Croatian institution which has been systematically involved in the field of lexicography and encyclopaedistics for almost 70 years. The representation and importance of medicine have been established in three ways. Firstly, by chronologically presenting medical terms and topics in the works of Croatian lexicography and encyclopaedistics from the 16th to the 19th century. Subsequently, by systemizing and analysing medical publications published in the 20th century, especially the ones created by the Institute. Lastly, by reviewing the presence of medical terms and topics in other Institute’s publications, especially in the Croatian Encyclopaedia. The study shows that medicine has been well represented in Croatian lexicographic and encyclopaedic works, which have played a significant role in establishing Croatian medical terminology and adding to systematization of knowledge in the field of medicine. The authors conclude that lexicography and encyclopaedistics in Croatia have paid adequate attention to medical topics, as well as mirrored the interest of professional and broader community towards medicine

Challenges in geotagging encyclopaedias

Enciklopedije se, kao pouzdani izvori znanja koje izrađuju stručnjaci predmetnoga područja i leksikografi, među drugim karakteristikama, diče i svojom pouzdanošću, točnošću i preciznošću. Prostorni prikaz enciklopedijskoga znanja na određeni se način već odavno koristi na geografskim i tematskim kartama, no digitalno doba donijelo je znatno proširene mogućnosti. Ipak, u nedostatku osustavljenoga modela obilježavanja i prikaza (geotagiranja) enciklopedijskoga znanja, rijetka djela u punoj mjeri rabe takav pristup. Stvaranje takva modela donosi i neke izazove. Imena lokacija (gradova, ulica, trgova i sl.) kroz vrijeme se mogu mijenjati, što je izazov u složenom pretraživanju ili prikazu na karti. U takvim se slučajevima traže rješenja svođenja na zajedničku oznaku, što je princip regularizacije (normalizacije) teksta. Istraživanje je potaknuto nastojanjem za unapređenjem mrežnoga izdanja Hrvatske tehničke enciklopedije Leksikografskoga zavoda Miroslav Krleža na Portalu hrvatske tehničke baštine. Autori analiziraju dosadašnju enciklopedijsku praksu bilježenja mjesnih imena koja su se kroz vrijeme mijenjala te razmatraju koji oblici bilježenja najbolje odgovaraju specifičnim, praktičnim zahtjevima digitalne enciklopedike. Takav bi način bilježenja i prikaza povećao upotrebljivost enciklopedija, jer bi se uz nastavak prakse prikaza informacija koje su precizne, korisnicima omogućilo olakšano pretraživanje i pregledavanje te prikaz znanja na karti.Encyclopaedias, as a reliable source of knowledge produced by experts and lexicographers, are, among other characteristics, known for their reliability, accuracy, and precision. The spatial representation of encyclopedic knowledge has in a way been used for a long time, such as in thematic maps, but the digital age has brought significantly expanded possibilities. However, in the absence of an established model for marking and displaying (geotagging) encyclopedic knowledge, few works make full use of such an approach. Creating such a model has some challenges. Locations names (of cities, streets, squares, etc.) can change over time, which can be a challenge when trying to do a complex search or display information on a map. In such cases, solutions are sought to reduce information to a common label, which is the principle of text regularisation (normalisation). The research was prompted by efforts to improve the online edition of the Croatian Encyclopedia of Technology by the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography on the Croatian Technical Heritage Portal. The authors analyse the current encyclopedic practice of recording place names that have changed over time, and consider which forms of recording best suit the specific, practical requirements of digital encyclopedic projects of today. Such a way of marking and displaying would increase the usability of encyclopedias because, along with providing information that is accurate, it would enable users to easily search, browse, and look up knowledge on a map

Bibliografija obuhvaća sve članke objavljene u Tehničkoj enciklopediji Leksikografskoga zavoda Miroslav Krleža koja je izlazila u razdoblju od 1963. do 1997. u 13 svezaka. Preparations for dam creation on Polojac creek : master’s thesis

Ovaj diplomski rad opisuje pripremne radnje i preliminarni projekt brane na potoku Polojac. Brana se gradi za potrebe zaštite od poplava te radi navodnjavanja poljoprivrednih površina, a stvoriti će akumulaciju površine 0,57 km2. Prospekcijom terena predloženo je povoljno pregradno mjesto. Provedena terenska, laboratorijska i geofizička istraživanja temelj su za izradu inženjersko-geološkog profila i odabir vrijednosti karakterističnih parametara tla. Prema Eurokodu 7, provedeni su proračuni procjeđivanja, stabilnosti i slijeganja brane za nekoliko projektnih situacija (pr. potres, naglo sniženje razine vode). Na osnovi provedenih proračuna, može se zaključiti da građevina zadovoljava sve uvjete stabilnosti koje zahtijeva Eurokod 7.Abstract: This master’s thesis describes preparatory work and preliminary design for the Polojac dam. The dam will be constructed for the purposes of flood protection and irrigation of agricultural land; it will create a reservoir area of 0.57 km2. On the basis of field investigations, a favorable partition space for the dam is proposed. Site investigation, laboratory, and geophysical studies are the basis for determining the soil-profile and values of characteristic soil parameters. According to Eurocode 7, calculations of seepage, stability and subsidence were carried out for several project situations (e.g., earthquake, rapid draw down). Based on the calculations performed, it can be concluded that the dam meets all the stability requirements of Eurocode 7
