    Effect of gut active carbohydrates on plasma IgG concentrations in piglets and calves

    Improving immune status in neonates is crucial to health and production. Gut active carbohydrates (GAC) have been associated with increasing immunoglobin levels and immonucompetence development in mammals. The objective of the following studies was to evaluate whether GAC (mannan-oligosaccharides) applied orally to progeny immediately following parturition, improved blood plasma immunoglobulin (Ig) type G concentrations in piglets and calves. Three trials were conducted comparing control groups with those receiving GAC orally. The first two trials used piglets that were monitored for blood IgG at 2 days of age and for changes in body weight (BW), and the third trial monitored calf IgG from birth to 21 days of age. Piglets in the experimental group received 0.75 g GAC in 10 ml saline at birth and 24 h of age. The calf trial compared the control group against calves that received 22.5 g GAC mixed into 4.5 l of colostrum (to give 5 g/l) in the first 24 h after parturition. Blood serum samples were taken at 2 days post partum in piglets, and at several time points from 6 h to 21 days of age in calves, and were analysed for IgG levels by radial immunodiffusion. In the first piglet trial, significantly higher levels (32%) of IgG were observed for piglets fed GAC (P < 0.001), and in the second, IgG concentration was elevated by 23% (P < 0.01) and BW increased by 9% (P = 0.023) with GAC supplementation. Significant improvements for calves were recorded at all time points in those fed GAC (P < 0.05), with an increase in serum IgG observed after the first day, which was maintained throughout the sampling period, resulting in a difference of 39% at the end of the trial (21 d). These findings form a basis for further studies, which are required to investigate possible modes of action involved in enhancing blood immunoglobulin concentrations in young animals, and the longer-term effects this may have on the development of the immune respons

    Diversidad de objetos, variedad de enfoques, prácticas disciplinares y multidisciplinares, y ejemplos de ejecución de proyectos de investigación y desarrollo son los rasgos distintivos de los siete capítulos que integran esta obra. En ellos se recoge el material desplegado en los Seminarios-Talleres de Metodología de la Investigación en Humanidades que se realizaron en el marco de las V Jornadas de Investigación de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo en setiembre de 2004: estudios sobre procesos sociales, cuestiones educativas, geográficas, históricas, lingüísticas y literarias. Algunos capítulos han mantenido el estilo y formato característicos del contexto de los seminarios-talleres, a veces con ligeras modificaciones; otros han sido enteramente reescritos para la convocatoria de esta publicación. Este libro refleja entonces abordajes disciplinares y pluridisciplinares diversos a problemáticas igualmente variadas. Por tratarse de propuestas orientadas a y/o basadas en seminarios-talleres, está claro que los autores involucrados no pueden abarcar todos los aspectos de los objetos de estudio respectivos. Sin embargo, la idea es al menos brindar algún punto de vista sobre el estadio de desarrollo de algunas de las investigaciones actualmente en ejecución en nuestra Facultad

    For over half a century, worldwide growth in affluence has continuously increased resource use and pollutant emissions far more rapidly than these have been reduced through better technology. The affluent citizens of the world are responsible for most environmental impacts and are central to any future prospect of retreating to safer environmental conditions. We summarise the evidence and present possible solution approaches. Any transition towards sustainability can only be effective if far-reaching lifestyle changes complement technological advancements. However, existing societies, economies and cultures incite consumption expansion and the structural imperative for growth in competitive market economies inhibits necessary societal change

    Toward community standards and software for whole-cell modeling

    Whole-cell (WC) modeling is a promising tool for biological research, bioengineering, and medicine. However, substantial work remains to create accurate, comprehensive models of complex cells. Methods: We organized the 2015 Whole-Cell Modeling Summer School to teach WC modeling and evaluate the need for new WC modeling standards and software by recoding a recently published WC model in SBML. Results: Our analysis revealed several challenges to representing WC models using the current standards. Conclusion: We, therefore, propose several new WC modeling standards, software, and databases. Significance:We anticipate that these new standards and software will enable more comprehensive models

    Towards Learning of Safety Knowledge from Human Demonstrations

    Future autonomous service robots are intended to operate in open and complex environments. This in turn implies complications ensuring safe operation. The tenor of few available investigations is the need for dynamically assessing operational risks. Furthermore, a new kind of hazards being implicated by the robot’s capability to manipulate the environment occurs: hazardous environmental object interactions. One of the open questions in safety research is integrating safety knowledge into robotic systems, enabling these systems behaving safety-conscious in hazardous situations. In this paper a safety procedure is described, in which learning of safety knowledge from human demonstration is considered. Within the procedure, a task is demonstrated to the robot, which observes object-to-object relations and labels situational data as commanded by the human. Based on this data, several supervised learning techniques are evaluated used for finally extracting safety knowledge. Results indicate that Decision Trees allow interesting opportunities

    Robust Exploration/Exploitation Trade-Offs in Safety-Critical Applications

    With regard to future service robots, unsafe exceptional circumstances can occur in complex systems that are hardly to foresee. In this paper, the assumption of having no knowledge about the environment is investigated using reinforcement learning as an option for learning behavior by trial-and-error. In such a scenario, action-selection decisions are made based on future reward predictions for minimizing costs in reaching a goal. It is shown that the selection of safetycritical actions leading to highly negative costs from the environment is directly related to the exploration/exploitation dilemma in temporal-di erence learning. For this, several exploration policies are investigated with regard to worst- and best-case performance in a dynamic environment. Our results show that in contrast to established exploration policies like epsilon-Greedy and Softmax, the recently proposed VDBE-Softmax policy seems to be more appropriate for such applications due to its robustness of the exploration parameter for unexpected situations
