Psychological Effects of War in All Quiet on the Western Front

    Get PDF
Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front changed the way the world viewed World War I. His harsh and honest portrayal of the soldiers’ experiences on the front lines gives readers a glimpse into unimaginable horrors. The physical brutality of WWI aside, there was a large psychological price to be paid by the men – their youth was lost, their memories were painful rather than comforting, and home ceased to exist outside of the army. This study analyzes these psychological effects in All Quiet and the one silver lining – comradeship. The key to understanding Remarque’s novel is the comradeship the men find, whether it be amongst themselves or with the enemy soldiers, because this comradeship is what allows them to cope with the nightmare they are living

Influence of wind-wave parameterisation on bed shear stress

    Get PDF
Resuspending of the sediment particles from the bottom is a process generated by different causes. One of them are waves, which can be generated by wind, tectonic activity, moon and sun attraction, different moving objects in the sea and other causes. In this work we discussed the effect of wind generated waves on the bottom shear stress (the tension created at the contact of the sediment and the moving water). To calculate the shear stress wave heights and wave periods are needed throughout the surface and in every time step. These parameters can be obtained with observations, measurements or with the help of mathematical models. Simplified wave height and period equations (Bretschneider, 1952) are already a part of the sedimentation module of the PCFLOW3D model; however, the results obtained are questionable. In order to find a better method we made a short review of seven different\ud empirical methods for calculation of the significant wave height and period. Using the MS Excel we tested these methods on different input data (wind speed, fetch length and water depth) and compared the results with each other and with the Darbyshire and Draper nomograms (Koutitas, 1988). The results obtained by all tested methods are approximately for one third lower than the results obtained\ud using Bretschneider’s method. Therefore the equations in the PCFLOW3D model need to be replaced. As the results of the tested methods do not differ significantly, additional research is needed: a comparison with the results of the third generation wave model (SWAN) and with measurements at\ud the buoy Vida operated by the National institute of biology

Numerical analysis of the cross wedge rolling process (CWR) for a stepped shaft

    Get PDF
The paper presents the results of numerical modeling of a complex CWR process for producing a stepped shaft. The modeling was performed using the Finite Element Method (FEM) based commercial software Simufact.Forming. The numerical analysis enabled the determination of changes in shape of the workpiece, strain and temperature distributions, as well as variations in the forces acting on the tool. The numerical results demonstrate that personal computers can today be used to model even most difficult cases of the CWR process, where complex shapes of tools and thermal phenomena occurring during forming are taken into consideration

Autobiographical Poetry to Plays: Taking Memoir to a Theatrical Level

Pulitzer prize winning playwright John Patrick Shanley wrote, “Theatre is a safe place to do the unsafe things that need to be done.” For my Capstone Project, I have compiled my autobiographical poetry, prose, and performance monologues into a theatrical manuscript to be used as the basis for a play. The final Capstone Project is a manuscript of an anticipated theatrical production based on the grieving process surrounding my brother\u27s suicide, as well as an exploration of my sexuality and the relationships I developed during the years surrounding his death. The Capstone Project’s theatrical manuscript is also accompanied by a 20-page analysis essay describing how my autobiographical works, mainly based on sexuality and grieving, relate to famed autobiographical writers Alison Bechdel, author of the graphic memoir Fun Home, A Family Tragicomic, and Joan Didion, who wrote The Year of Magical Thinking. Bechdel’s text focuses primarily on her homosexuality and her father’s closeted sexuality, which led to his suicide. Didion’s novel is an account of her grieving the sudden death of her husband, as well as coping with the critical illness of her daughter. Both authors have had their novels turned into Broadway productions. I have shaped my writing in the same theatrical fashion. My analysis paper describes how writing, transformed into a theatrical play, is more compelling for a live audience. Intimate work based on issues that are difficult to describe tends to be better understood when experienced by actors performing truthfully under the written word of the playwright. Oscar Wilde’s prose and Walt Whitman’s poetry also served as inspiration and guidance for my project. I was influenced to take my poetry to a theatrical level by Whitman\u27s line from his introduction to Leaves of Grass, “A great poem is no finish to a man or a woman but rather a beginning.” My poetry served as the starting point from which my script will unfold. Wilde’s line, from The Picture of Dorian Gray, “I love acting. It is so much more real than life,” confirms that the autobiographical events I write about will be best received in a performance venue, where a heightened and theatrical reality are key to successfully telling a compelling story

    Modelling edutainment

The paper elaborates on a certain way of describing an architectural space by means of a physical model, along with a project exercise realized as a part of the course in Descriptive Geometry which is an element of the program of the first year of studies in the Faculty of Architecture. The intent is to incorporate a component of entertainment to break out of the “rigid” and “dry” way of teaching this subject

Steel balls forming by cross rolling with upsetting

    Get PDF
The paper describes a process of forming four balls with a diameter of 22 mm by means of cross rolling with upsetting. The paper also presents the tool used to form semi-finished balls. Owing to the application of the finite element method (FEM), the course of the rolling process as well as temperature and strain distributions in the obtained balls could be presented. The rolling tests conducted in laboratory conditions at the Lublin University of Technology have proved that the balls produced with the developed rolling method meet the demands for grinding media used in ball mills
