    Discovering gene functional relationships using a literature-based NMF model

    The rapid growth of the biomedical literature and genomic information presents a major challenge for determining the functional relationships among genes. Several bioinformatics tools have been developed to extract and identify gene relationships from various biological databases. However, an intuitive user-interface tool that allows the biologist to determine functional relationships among genes is still not available. In this study, we develop a Web-based bioinformatics software environment called FAUN or Feature Annotation Using Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to facilitate both the discovery and classification of functional relationships among genes. Both the computational complexity and parameterization of NMF for processing gene sets are discussed. We tested FAUN on three manually constructed gene document collections, and then used it to analyze several microarray-derived gene sets obtained from studies of the developing cerebellum in normal and mutant mice. FAUN provides utilities for collaborative knowledge discovery and identification of new gene relationships from text streams and repositories (e.g., MEDLINE). It is particularly useful for the validation and analysis of gene associations suggested by microarray experimentation. The FAUN site is publicly available at http://grits.eecs.utk.edu/faun

    Reflexive Personal Metadiscourse in Research Articles on Language Learning: A Discourse Analysis

    This research attempts to identify the functions of reflexive personal metadiscourse in research articles on language learning. Data for this research were taken from 17 research articles, totaling 177,309 words, published in Language Learning and Technology, an online refereed journal of language learning and technology. In total, 66 instances of reflexive personal metadiscourse were found serving 16 different functions. 93.94% of the instances commented on the on-going text, while 6.06% established interaction between the writer and the audience. The small number of occurrences of personal metadiscourse, though having various functionalities, has yet to gain considerable favor in academic writing

    Background Searching the enormous amount of information available in biomedical literature to extract novel functional relationships among genes remains a challenge in the field of bioinformatics. While numerous (software) tools have been developed to extract and identify gene relationships from biological databases, few effectively deal with extracting new (or implied) gene relationships, a process which is useful in interpretation of discovery-oriented genome-wide experiments. Results In this study, we develop a Web-based bioinformatics software environment called FAUN or Feature Annotation Using Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to facilitate both the discovery and classification of functional relationships among genes. Both the computational complexity and parameterization of NMF for processing gene sets are discussed. FAUN is tested on three manually constructed gene document collections. Its utility and performance as a knowledge discovery tool is demonstrated using a set of genes associated with Autism. Conclusions FAUN not only assists researchers to use biomedical literature efficiently, but also provides utilities for knowledge discovery. This Web-based software environment may be useful for the validation and analysis of functional associations in gene subsets identified by high-throughput experiments

Trust in online store, perceived risk and attitude towards online purchasing are all factors that lead to incerasing consumer’s respond in regards of online purchase intention. The purpose of this study was to investigate the significant impact of trust in online store on perceived risk of fashion products in Surabaya, to determine the significant impact of perceived risk on attitude towards online purchasing of fashion products in Surabaya, and to acknowledge any significantt effects of attitude towards online purchasing on online purchase intention of fashion products in Surabaya. The study design utilize casual study that attempts to reveal relationship and cocrrelation between variables. The research data is the data interval with primary data through questionarres that use 5 likert scale. The Data analysis techniques adopt the path analysis. This study found that Trust in online store affects Perceived risk, Perceived Risk lead to Attitude towards online purchasing, and Attitude towards online shopping significantly influences Online Purchase Intention

    Evaluation of optical solder for fiber-to-waveguide coupling in silicon photonics

Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, 2008.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 57-59).Copper interconnects have shown its limit to meet the bandwidth demand even in the short reach applications due to its increase power consumption, RC delay, EMI, crosstalk and other effects which are aggravated as dimension shrinks. Despite efforts to increase the system performance, e.g. by multicore technology, migration to photonics is unavoidable, as it can give much superior performance. The major impediment to the wide-use of photonics is the cost. Three major components that contribute to the cost escalation are the absence of integrable light source, fast modulator, and effective fiber to waveguide coupler. The latest issue was addressed in this work. Coupling light efficiently from fiber to waveguide is challenging because of the size (6[mu]m core diameter for fiber, 500nm for waveguide), shape, and refractive index (~1.5 for fiber, 3.5 for waveguide) differences. Optical solder was proposed as the gap filler in between the fiber and waveguide to account for the fabrication uncertainties. Together with an inverse taper structure patterned in the waveguide end, the coupling loss was much reduced from 7.5dB (direct butt-coupling), to less than IdB. Besides, optical solder increases the reliability of device, as it prevents moisture and dust from impairing the optically active area of the die. Its fabrication is also integrable with the current CMOS technology. The configuration allows high density optical interconnect at the edges of the die; together with the electrical interconnect spreading across the area of the chip. All these make this system very good potential coupling method to solve one of the major impediments above, and thus enable the widespread use of electronic-photonic ICs.by Fidelia Tjioe.M.Eng

    Analisis Kebutuhan Pelatihan Dosen pada Dosen Program Studi dengan Metode Training Needs Analysis

    Sebuah jurusan pada Universitas X di Indonesia merupakan jurusan yang banyak diminati oleh banyak lulusan SMA dari berbagai kota di Indonesia. Mahasiswa yang diterima jurusan ini setiap tahunnya berjumlah lebih dari 200 mahasiswa sejak tahun 2011 dan jumlah tenaga dosen di jurusan ini adalah 37 orang. Dalam upaya peningkatan kualitas pendidikan jurusan ini, diperlukan peningkatan kemampuan dosen. Permasalahan yang dihadapi jurusan ini adalah pelatihan yang selama ini diberikan kepada dosen masih belum dapat memenuhi kekurangan kompetensi dosen dan masih belum pernah diadakan penelitian ilmiah mengenai kebutuhan pelatihan dosen. Jurusan ini berencana memberikan beberapa jenis pelatihan kepada dosen berdasarkan kebutuhan pelatihan dosen. Penentuan jenis pelatihan didasarkan pada nilai gap kompetensi dari 4 kompetensi utama, yaitu kompetensi pedagogik, profesional, kepribadian, dan sosial. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah training needs analysis. Penelitian ini dimulai dengan melakukan penyebaran kuesioner pada 9 dosen yang terdiri dari ketua jurusan, sekretaris jurusan, ketua uji jaminan mutu, dam 6 kepala laboratirum untuk memperoleh standar kompetensi dosen. Kemudian melakukan penyebaran kuesioner pada 29 dosen dan 232 mahasiswa dari angkatan 2013 hingga 2016 untuk mendapatkan nilai kompetensi yang dimiliki dosen saat ini. Kemudian dilakukan perhitungan dan analisis nilai gap kompetensi dari 4 kompetensi utama. Nilai gap kompetensi dari dosen dan dari mahasiswa digabung dengan presentase 70% nilai dari mahasiswa dan 30% nilai dari dosen. Kemudian jenis pelatihan yang dibutuhkan masing-masing dosen ditentukan berdasarkan 2 nilai gap kompetensi terendah dari tiap dosen. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, masih banyak gap kompetensi yang bernilai negatif pada dosen jurusan ini. Pada kompetensi pedagogik dan profesional, semua dosen memiliki nilai gap kompetensi negatif. Kemudian pada kompetensi kepribadian, hanya terdapat 3 dosen yang memiliki nilai gap kompetensi positif. Sedangkan pada kompetensi sosial, hanya terdapat 1 dosen yang memiliki nilai gap kompetensi positif. Untuk dapat meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan jurusan ini, gap kompetensi perlu segera diperbaiki. Pelatihan yang dibutuhkan dosen untuk meningkatkan kompetensi adalah workshop penyusunan materi kuliah, pelatihan yang sesuai dengan bidang keahlian dosen, personality development training, pelatihan komunikasi efektif dan interaksi positif, serta sharing session pemahaman karakteristik dosen dan mahasiswa

    ABSTRAK - Masalah penelitian ini adalah bagaimanakah kemampuan berbicara dalam diskusi mahasiswa Program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia di kelas A angkatan 2015 Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Tadulako? Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa dalam diskusi di kelas A angkatan 2015 Program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Tadulako. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan yaitu penelitian kualitatif. Teknik yang digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data adalah observasi, dokumentasi, dan simak. Analisis data yang digunakan yaitu berdasarkan distribusi frekuensi tunggal dengan menggunakan rumus ∑FX  dibagi N untuk menentukan nilai rata-rata, sedangkan untuk menentukan nilai individual menggunakan rumus Nilai perolehan dibagi Skor Maksimal kali 100. Berdasarkan rumus yang telah ditetapkan diketahui bahwa nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh Mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia di Kelas A Angkatan 2015 Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Tadulako dalam mata kuliah analisis kesalahan berbahasa yaitu 86,3. Pemerolehan nilai tersebut menunjukkan bahwa Mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia di Kelas A Angkatan 2015 Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Tadulako sudah mampu malaksanakan diskusi dengan baik. Kata Kunci : Kemampuan Berbicara dalam Diskusi Mahasisw
