    Direct Measurement of Quantum Confinement Effects at Metal to Quantum-Well Nanocontacts

    Model metal-semiconductor nanostructure Schottky nanocontacts were made on cleaved heterostructures containing GaAs quantum wells (QWs) of varying width and were locally probed by ballistic electron emission microscopy. The local Schottky barrier was found to increase by ∼0.140 eV as the QW width was systematically decreased from 15 to 1 nm, due mostly to a large (∼0.200 eV) quantum-confinement increase to the QW conduction band. The measured barrier increase over the full 1 to 15 nm QW range was quantitatively explained when local "interface pinning" and image force lowering effects are also considered

    Cognitive and Neural Effects of Vision-Based Speed-of-Processing Training in Older Adults with Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Pilot Study

    Objectives: To examine the cognitive and neural effects of vision-based speed-of-processing (VSOP) training in older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and contrast those effects with an active control (mental leisure activities (MLA)). Design: Randomized single-blind controlled pilot trial. Setting: Academic medical center. Participants: Individuals with aMCI (N = 21). Intervention: Six-week computerized VSOP training. Measurements: Multiple cognitive processing measures, instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), and two resting state neural networks regulating cognitive processing: central executive network (CEN) and default mode network (DMN). Results: VSOP training led to significantly greater improvements in trained (processing speed and attention: F1,19 = 6.61, partial η2 = 0.26, P = .02) and untrained (working memory: F1,19 = 7.33, partial η2 = 0.28, P = .01; IADLs: F1,19 = 5.16, partial η2 = 0.21, P = .03) cognitive domains than MLA and protective maintenance in DMN (F1, 9 = 14.63, partial η2 = 0.62, P = .004). VSOP training, but not MLA, resulted in a significant improvement in CEN connectivity (Z = −2.37, P = .02). Conclusion: Target and transfer effects of VSOP training were identified, and links between VSOP training and two neural networks associated with aMCI were found. These findings highlight the potential of VSOP training to slow cognitive decline in individuals with aMCI. Further delineation of mechanisms underlying VSOP-induced plasticity is necessary to understand in which populations and under what conditions such training may be most effective

    High-quality InAsyP1−y step-graded buffer by molecular-beam epitaxy

    Relaxed, high-quality, compositionally step-graded InAsyP1-y layers with an As composition of y=0.4, corresponding to a lattice mismatch of similar to1.3% were grown on InP substrates using solid-source molecular-beam epitaxy. Each layer was found to be nearly fully relaxed observed by triple axis x-ray diffraction, and plan-view transmission electron microscopy revealed an average threading dislocations of 4x10(6) cm(-2) within the InAs0.4P0.6 cap layer. Extremely ordered crosshatch morphology was observed with very low surface roughness (3.16 nm) compared to cation-based In0.7Al0.3As/InxAl1-xAs/InP graded buffers (10.53 nm) with similar mismatch and span of lattice constants on InP. The results show that InAsyP1-y graded buffers on InP are promising candidates as virtual substrates for infrared and high-speed metamorphic III-V devices. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics

    Independent Component Analysis of the Effect of L-dopa on fMRI of Language Processing

    L-dopa, which is a precursor for dopamine, acts to amplify strong signals, and dampen weak signals as suggested by previous studies. The effect of L-dopa has been demonstrated in language studies, suggesting restriction of the semantic network. In this study, we aimed to examine the effect of L-dopa on language processing with fMRI using Independent Component Analysis (ICA). Two types of language tasks (phonological and semantic categorization tasks) were tested under two drug conditions (placebo and L-dopa) in 16 healthy subjects. Probabilistic ICA (PICA), part of FSL, was implemented to generate Independent Components (IC) for each subject for the four conditions and the ICs were classified into task-relevant source groups by a correlation threshold criterion. Our key findings include: (i) The highly task-relevant brain regions including the Left Inferior Frontal Gyrus (LIFG), Left Fusiform Gyrus (LFUS), Left Parietal lobe (LPAR) and Superior Temporal Gyrus (STG) were activated with both L-dopa and placebo for both tasks, and (ii) as compared to placebo, L-dopa was associated with increased activity in posterior regions, including the superior temporal area (BA 22), and decreased activity in the thalamus (pulvinar) and inferior frontal gyrus (BA 11/47) for both tasks. These results raise the possibility that L-dopa may exert an indirect effect on posterior regions mediated by the thalamus (pulvinar)

    Effect of Propranolol on Functional Connectivity in Autism Spectrum Disorder—A Pilot Study

    A decrease in interaction between brain regions is observed in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which is believed to be related to restricted neural network access in ASD. Propranolol, a beta-adrenergic antagonist, has revealed benefit during performance of tasks involving flexibility of access to networks, a benefit also seen in ASD. Our goal was to determine the effect of propranolol on functional connectivity in ASD during a verbal decision making task as compared to nadolol, thereby accounting for the potential spurious fMRI effects due to peripheral hemodynamic effects of propranolol. Ten ASD subjects underwent fMRI scans after administration of placebo, propranolol or nadolol, while performing a phonological decision making task. Comparison of functional connectivity between pre-defined ROI-pairs revealed a significant increase with propranolol compared to nadolol, suggesting a potential imaging marker for the cognitive effects of propranolol in ASD

    Dissociation between the Activity of the Right Middle Frontal Gyrus and the Middle Temporal Gyrus in Processing Semantic Priming

    The aim of this event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study was to test whether the right middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and middle temporal gyrus (MTG) would show differential sensitivity to the effect of prime-target association strength on repetition priming. In the experimental condition (RP), the target occurred after repetitive presentation of the prime within an oddball design. In the control condition (CTR), the target followed a single presentation of the prime with equal probability of the target as in RP. To manipulate semantic overlap between the prime and the target both conditions (RP and CTR) employed either the onomatopoeia “oink” as the prime and the referent “pig” as the target (OP) or vice-versa (PO) since semantic overlap was previously shown to be greater in OP. The results showed that the left MTG was sensitive to release of adaptation while both the right MTG and MFG were sensitive to sequence regularity extraction and its verification. However, dissociated activity between OP and PO was revealed in RP only in the right MFG. Specifically, target “pig” (OP) and the physically equivalent target in CTR elicited comparable deactivations whereas target “oink” (PO) elicited less inhibited response in RP than in CTR. This interaction in the right MFG was explained by integrating these effects into a competition model between perceptual and conceptual effects in priming processing

В данной работе произведён расчет по выбору электропривода и преобразователя частоты для управления винтовым компрессором. Обоснован выбор способа управления, рассчитаны механические и электромеханические характеристики. Методом имитационного моделирования на ЭВМ исследованы переходные процессы, сделаны выводы и обобщения по результатам моделирования и расчета.The object of the study is a screw compressor for supplying compressed air in pneumatic equipment. In this paper, the choice of the electric drive and the frequency converter for controlling the screw compressor was calculated. The choice of the control method is substantiated, mechanical and electromechanical characteristics are calculated.
