Among Christians and Muslims: An Approach to the Captivity in the Frontier between the Kingdom of Castille and the Emirate of Granada (XIV- XV Centuries)

[EN] The proposition of this paper is to analyze the various facets of the captivity phenomenon in the frontier between Granada and Castile. In this context, the captivity was a very usual manifestation of the frontier violence and insecurity lived for the Andalusian society. For this reason, it begins referring to key issues such as the context, the importance of the captivity and the measures that occurred around the release of these captives in this geographical area. Subsequently, specific mentions are also added to the living conditions of these captives and their possible forms of redemption. Consequently, the captivity is here shown as a strong social problem through which to observe the main characters of the border society of the Iberian Peninsula during the end of the Middle Ages.[ES] El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las diversas facetas del fenómeno del cautiverio en la frontera entre Granada y Castilla. En este contexto, el cautiverio fue una manifestación muy habitual de la violencia e inseguridad fronteriza vivida por la sociedad andaluza. Por este motivo, se comienza haciendo referencia a cuestiones clave como el contexto, la importancia del cautiverio y las medidas que se han producido en torno a la liberación de estos cautivos en esta zona geográfica. Con posterioridad, también se incorporan menciones concretas a las condiciones de vida de esos cautivos y sus posibles formas de redención. En consecuencia, el cautiverio se muestra aquí como un fuerte problema social a través del cual observar los principales personajes de la sociedad fronteriza de la Península Ibérica durante el final de la Edad Media.Peer reviewe

El recuerdo de la Guerra de Granada (1482-1492) en la cronística peninsular del siglo XVI

During the century after the Castilian triumph against the Nasrid emirate, the War of Granada continued to occupy an important role in the various historiographic sources composed in the penin- sular territory. Throughout this period, there were several chroniclers who made new narrations of this dispute, some of them with a marked partisan character, which came to complement the infor- mation of the previous works of the late medieval period. Such stories helped to consolidate that rhetoric of imperialist perspective, which aimed to highlight the new role of the Spanish monarchy in the European panorama. This article intends to carry out a tour of the most important of all of them, focusing on the reading that each of these authors made of the final victory of the Catholic Monarchs against the last Muslim kingdom of the Iberian Peninsula.Durante la centuria posterior al triunfo castellano frente al emirato nazarí, la Guerra de Granada continuó ocupando un papel importante en las diversas fuentes historiográficas compuestas en territorio peninsular. A lo largo de este periodo, fueron varios los cronistas que realizaron nuevas narraciones de esta disputa, algunas de ellas de marcado carácter partidista, que vinieron a complementar la información de las anteriores obras del periodo bajomedieval. Tales relatos ayudaron a consolidar aquella retórica de perspectiva imperialista, que pretendía resaltar el nuevo papel de la monarquía hispana en el panorama europeo. Este artículo pretende realizar un recorrido por las más importantes de todas ellas, incidiendo en la lectura que cada uno de estos autores realizó de la definitiva victoria de los Reyes Católicos frente al último reino musulmán de la Península Ibérica

La monografía de Joseph O’Callaghan viene a llenar un vacío importante de trabajos sobre las denominadas cruzadas tardías del periodo bajomedieval en el ámbito anglosajón. En este contexto, las iniciativas castellanas bajomedievales frente al emirato nazarí habían sido tratadas en obras colectivas, generalmente relacionadas con la expansión y pervivencia tardía del fenómeno cruzado en contextos europeos. El estudio de O’Callaghan se presenta como un ejercicio de síntesis y defi nición de los rasgos más característicos de esta etapa de la historia peninsular, desde una visión que intenta ser equilibrada e integradora que da continuidad a una determinada defi nición ultra-pluralista de la cruzada.Peer Reviewe
