A Period of Transition: Early Islamic and Umayyad Coinage

A study of four coins from 620 to 680 AD provides a meager yet insightful glimpse into the coinage minted by Islamic rulers during their conquest over the Holy Land and the transition of rule from the Byzantine Empire to the Islamic Caliphate. With the help of an innovative technology called Reflective Transference Image (RTI), on loan from USC, I created high-resolution images that can be adjusted with respect to light and reflectivity. Creating RTI images of the coins administers a deeper alternate perspective giving light to aspects of the coin that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Using the RTI technology alongside research of the coins’ historical context verifies that the coins not only serve an economical purpose but also have a strategic political, social and religious agenda

A mobilkommunikációs szolgáltatások fejlődésének földrajzi sajátosságai Magyarországon = Geographical features of development in mobile communication services in Hungary

A magyarországi mobilkommunikáció fejlődési folyamatának legfontosabb jellemzője, hogy a mobiltelefonok birtoklása, térbeli terjedése és a különféle fajta mobilszolgáltatások igénybevételének mértéke egy régión, illetve településen belül főként a népesség korösszetételének, gazdasági és társadalmi státusának, iskolázottságának, jövedelmi viszonyainak és lakóhelyének függvényeként alakul. Megállapíthatunk ugyanakkor egy végső konklúziót, hogy a különböző távközlési innovációk - amelyek közé a mobiltelefon is tartozik - megjelenési helye és annak közvetlen hatásterülete (Magyarország esetében ilyen térségnek tekinthető a főváros és agglomerációja) az innovációk terjedésének, de még a telítődésének időszakában is megőrzi előnyét a folyamatba később bekapcsolódókkal szemben az eszközök hatékony és sokoldalú felhasználásában. Mindez nem segíti elő a perifériák felzárkózását, hanem - az újabb és újabb innovációknak a központi funkciókat ellátó településen való megjelenése és az átlagosnál sokkal kedvezőbb műszaki-gazdasági és társadalmi feltételekből fakadó hatékonyabb hasznosíthatósága miatt - állandósítja a fejlettebb térségektől való lemaradásukat. Természetesen ez nem azt jelenti, hogy nem lenne igen hasznos folyamat a mobiltelefon-használat általános elterjedése a legfejletlenebb régiókban is, ám a fejlett térségek e téren is meglévő dinamikai előnye megakadályozza a folyamatosan fennálló területi fejlettségbeli különbségek kívánt mértékű csökkentését. | The main characteristics of the development process of mobile communication in Hungary are the ownership of mobile sets, their spatial diffusion and the measure and intensity of use in case of different types of mobile services inside a certain region or settlement. All these factors depend on the age structure, the educational level and the qualification of local population, societal and economic status of inhabitants. The role of their personal incomes and the quality of settlement of life have also of great importance in shaping their mobile culture. However, here have to draw a final conclusion: Areas where the different innovations of new telecommunication technologies (like mobile phone) are appearing and diffusing (e.g. centres, core areas, agglomeration zones) are able to preserve their advantage in effective an d multifunkctional use of mobile sets over regions connecting into this process in a later phase. This process hinder the emergence of peripheries and make stable their backward position in the long term regional development process. Of course, the increasing spatial diffusion of mobile telephony in less favoured region and settlements in handy-cap position is a very positive process. But the stable advantages of prosperous regions and cities with dinamically increasing economy mean permanent obstacles for poor regions and settlements beeing on the peripheries to change on their bad position in competing with the rich regions and settlements

Cost Saving Corrections

The purpose of this project was to conduct a cost-savings analysis of doing laundry within the Adult Correctional Institution in the Rhode Island Department of Corrections. This research was comprised of an assessment of the cost of homemade and store-bought detergent observed by an analysis of machine efficiency and life expectancy, followed by calculated savings and the desired effect versus the original pricing and the current effectiveness. Real-world practicality in the Adult Correctional Institute and the Rhode Island Department of Corrections was also considered. My research provides a cost-effective solution to doing laundry in correctional institutions
