THE FEASIBILITY OF LOW COST AIRLINES IN KAOHSIUNG, SOUTHERN CITY OF TAIWAN
The budget airlines have caused tremendous impact in air business and travel population. Even though the budget airlines in Europe and USA are already quite popular, the budget airlines are still new in Taiwan. Pearson (2014) suggested that LCCs now are growing particularly within Asia-Pacific. Since then, there have been many studies about LCCs strategies or models, or the competitions between full-service airlines, but few have focused on the relationship between geographical locations and budget airline routes. That is, whether the LCCs’ flying routines, almost on local city or sub-airports, will help the prosperous tourism business of the local city, Kaohsiung City, a southern city of Taiwan
Institutional Investors and Corporate Environmental, Social, and Governance Policies: Evidence from Toxics Release Data
This paper studies the role of institutional investors in influencing corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies by analyzing the relation between institutional ownership and toxic release from facilities to which institutions are geographically proximate. We develop a local preference hypothesis based on the delegated philanthropy and transaction-costs theories. Consistent with the hypothesis, local institutional ownership is negatively related to facility toxic release. The negative relation is stronger for local socially responsible investing (SRI) funds, local public pension funds, and local dedicated institutions. We also find that the relation is more negative in communities that prefer more stringent environmental policies and in communities of greater collective cohesiveness. Local institutional ownership, particularly local ownerships by SRI funds and public pension funds, is positively related to the probability that an ESG proposal is either introduced or withdrawn. Spatial Analysis of Baseline Data of Surface Soil and Landcover Classes of the North Etiwanda Preserve after Five Years of Drought Stress (2011-2015) in a Mediterranean Climate Region in Southern California.
The North Etiwanda Preserve (NEP) is a conservation area in a Mediterranean climate located in Southern California. This study focused on surface soil characters at the NEP to understand the soil stability and to find the erosion rate as well as the surface soil condition and the coverage of vegetation communities of the preserve area after five years of drought stress. Digitized main habitat types and areas as well as enhanced raster images were used to create landcover maps to display the vegetation composition of each habitat.
A geodatabase was created to map the landcover maps. The vegetation was identified and data was collected using the point intercept method at 1-meter intervals on the 12-meter transects. Soil samples from 36 sampling sites were collected and were tested for soil parameters (soil structure, texture, temperature, pH value, soil water % weight, bulk density, CEC, etc.). Quality control of the maps was done by comparing the mapped classes with field surveys and soil lab results. The user’s accuracy of the produced landcover class maps was 86.4 %. The canopy percentage coverage of plant communities and of dominant species were calculated. The surface soil run-off volume of each surveyed location was calculated using the Universal Soil Loss Equation: A = RKLSCP.
The NEP had shallow soil organic layers and low CEC. Hot spots of soil erosion were located along the fire break area. Soil erosion rate was higher within the burned area when compared to the east side of the preserve where vegetation communities were at the mature successional stage. The surface soil condition of the NEP are strongly influenced by vegetation types and the litter/wood cover.The pioneer vegetation communities mainly grew within the disturbed areas, which were vulnerable to soil erosion and changes of successional stage
PEARL: Personalizing Large Language Model Writing Assistants with Generation-Calibrated Retrievers
Powerful large language models have facilitated the development of writing
assistants that promise to significantly improve the quality and efficiency of
composition and communication. However, a barrier to effective assistance is
the lack of personalization in LLM outputs to the author's communication style
and specialized knowledge. In this paper, we address this challenge by
proposing PEARL, a retrieval-augmented LLM writing assistant personalized with
a generation-calibrated retriever. Our retriever is trained to select historic
user-authored documents for prompt augmentation, such that they are likely to
best personalize LLM generations for a user request. We propose two key
novelties for training our retriever: 1) A training data selection method that
identifies user requests likely to benefit from personalization and documents
that provide that benefit; and 2) A scale-calibrating KL-divergence objective
that ensures that our retriever closely tracks the benefit of a document for
personalized generation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of PEARL in
generating personalized workplace social media posts and Reddit comments.
Finally, we showcase the potential of a generation-calibrated retriever to
double as a performance predictor and further improve low-quality generations

Factors Influencing Sleep Difficulty and Sleep Quantity in the Citizen Pscientist Psoriatic Cohort.
IntroductionSleep is essential for overall health and well-being, yet more than one-third of adults report inadequate sleep. The prevalence is higher among people with psoriasis, with up to 85.4% of the psoriatic population reporting sleep disruption. Poor sleep among psoriasis patients is particularly concerning because psoriasis is independently associated with many of the same comorbidities as sleep dysfunction, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Given the high prevalence and serious consequences of disordered sleep in psoriasis, it is vital to understand the nature of sleep disturbance in this population. This study was designed to help meet this need by using survey data from Citizen Pscientist, an online patient portal developed by the National Psoriasis Foundation.MethodsOur analysis included 3118 participants who identified as having a diagnosis by a physician of psoriasis alone or psoriasis with psoriatic arthritis. Demographic information, psoriasis severity and duration, sleep apnea status, smoking and alcohol consumption, itch timing, and sleep characteristics were included. Two separate multivariate logistic regression models in STATA were used to determine whether the presence of psoriatic arthritis, age, gender, body mass index, comorbid sleep apnea, psoriasis severity, timing of worst itch, smoking status, or high-risk alcohol consumption were associated with sleep difficulty or low sleep quantity, defined by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as less than 7 h of sleep per night on average.ResultsResults from the multivariate logistic regressions found that sleep difficulty was associated with psoriatic arthritis (OR 2.15, 95% CI [1.79-2.58]), female gender (2.03 [1.67-2.46]), obese body mass index (BMI ≥ 30) (1.25 [1.00-1.56]), sleep apnea (1.41 [1.07-1.86]), psoriasis severity of moderate (1.59 [1.30-1.94]) or severe (2.40 [1.87-3.08]), and smoking (1.60 [1.26-2.02]). Low sleep quantity was associated with obese BMI (1.62 [1.29-2.03]), sleep apnea (1.30 [1.01-1.68]), psoriasis severity of moderate (1.41 [1.16-1.72]) or severe (1.40 [1.11-1.76]), and smoking (1.62 [1.31-2.00]). Sleep difficulty and low sleep quantity were not associated with age, alcohol consumption, or timing of worst itch.ConclusionThese results are potentially meaningful in several aspects. We identify an important distinction between sleep difficulty and sleep quantity in psoriatic disease, whereby having psoriatic arthritis and being female are each associated with sleep difficulty despite no association with low sleep quantity. Furthermore, there is conflicting evidence from prior studies as to whether psoriasis severity is associated with sleep difficulty, but this well-powered, large study revealed a strong, graded relationship between psoriasis severity and both sleep difficulty and low sleep quantity. Overall, our results show that both sleep difficulty and low sleep quantity were associated with multiple factors in this analysis of a large psoriatic cohort. These findings suggest that dermatologists may gather clinically useful information by screening psoriatic patients for trouble sleeping and low sleep quantity to identify potential comorbidities and to more effectively guide disease management
Determinants of fish consumption in older people: a community-based cohort study
Objectives: Habitual fish consumption and its determinants in older people have not been well investigated. We addressed these issues through a population-based cohort study. Methods: In 2001-2003 we interviewed a random sample of 3336 residents aged ≥60 years in China, documenting socioeconomic status (SES) and disease risk factors. In 2007-2009 we re-interviewed 1757 survivors, additionally surveying average self-reported intake of fish over the past two years. Results: Of 1757 participants, 1697 responded to the fish consumption questionnaire; 23.0% of whom had “never eat” fish, 43.4% “once a week”, 26.9% “more than twice a week”, and 6.7% “≥once a day”. There was an inverse association of fish consumption with older age (multivariate adjusted odds ratio 0.64 [95% CI 0.45-0.92] and 0.35 [0.24-0.52] at ages of 75-79, and ≥80 years), female gender (0.63, 0.47-0.84), smoking (0.65, 0.48-0.88), living in a rural area (0.10, 0.07-0.15), having educational level of ≤primary school (0.10, 0.05-0.19), occupation of peasant (0.08, 0.05-0.14), low income (0.11, 0.07-0.18), financial difficulties (0.25, 0.18-0.34), being never married/divorced (0.48, 0.28-0.81), having undetected hypertension (0.71, 0.55-0.91), depression (0.50, 0.29-0.84) and dementia (0.64, 0.41-0.98). However, participants with central obesity and heart disease at baseline had increased odds of fish consumption. Separate data analysis for different levels of fish consumption showed a dose-response trend for these associations. Conclusion: In older Chinese, there are large socioeconomic inequalities, and certain lifestyle, psychosocial factors and health-related conditions are strong determinants of fish consumption. Such information is important for future development or refinement of effective dietary interventions targeting older adults
Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts
Pan-cancer Alterations of the MYC Oncogene and Its Proximal Network across the Cancer Genome Atlas
Although theMYConcogene has been implicated incancer, a systematic assessment of alterations ofMYC, related transcription factors, and co-regulatoryproteins, forming the proximal MYC network (PMN),across human cancers is lacking. Using computa-tional approaches, we define genomic and proteo-mic features associated with MYC and the PMNacross the 33 cancers of The Cancer Genome Atlas.Pan-cancer, 28% of all samples had at least one ofthe MYC paralogs amplified. In contrast, the MYCantagonists MGA and MNT were the most frequentlymutated or deleted members, proposing a roleas tumor suppressors.MYCalterations were mutu-ally exclusive withPIK3CA,PTEN,APC,orBRAFalterations, suggesting that MYC is a distinct onco-genic driver. Expression analysis revealed MYC-associated pathways in tumor subtypes, such asimmune response and growth factor signaling; chro-matin, translation, and DNA replication/repair wereconserved pan-cancer. This analysis reveals insightsinto MYC biology and is a reference for biomarkersand therapeutics for cancers with alterations ofMYC or the PMN
