Character Selection During Interactive Taxonomic Identification: “Best Characters”
Software interfaces for interactive multiple-entry taxonomic identification (polyclaves) sometimes provide a “best character” or “separation” coefficient, to guide the user to choose a character that could most effectively reduce the number of identification steps required. The coefficient could be particularly helpful when difficult or expensive tasks are needed for forensic identification, and in very large databases, uses that appear likely to increase in importance. Several current systems also provide tools to develop taxonomies or single-entry identification keys, with a variety of coefficients that are appropriate to that purpose. For the identification task, however, information theory neatly applies, and provides the most appropriate coefficient. To our knowledge, Delta-Intkey is the only currently available system that uses a coefficient related to information theory, and it is currently being reimplemented, which may allow for improvement. We describe two improvements to the algorithm used by Delta-Intkey. The first improves transparency as the number of remaining taxa decreases, by normalizing the range of the coefficient to [0,1]. The second concerns numeric ranges, which require consistent treatment of sub-intervals and their end-points. A stand-alone Bestchar program for categorical data is provided, in the Python and R languages. The source code is freely available and dedicated to the Public Domain
Distribution of Non-uniform Demagnetization Fields in Paramagnetic Bulk Solids
A general calculation for the distribution of non-uniform demagnetization
fields in paramagnetic bulk solids is described and the fields for various
sample geometries are calculated. Cones, ellipsoids, paraboloids and
hyperboloids with similar sample aspect ratios are considered. Significant
differences in their demagnetization fields are observed. The calculation shows
that the demagnetization field magnitudes decrease along the axis of symmetry
(along ) where an externally applied magnetic field is aligned, and increase
in the vicinity of the lateral surfaces with the largest field values found in
the cone and the narrowest field distributions found in the hyperboloid.
Application is made to the theoretical modeling of the H-NMR spectra of a
single crystal of field-induced superconductor -(BETS)FeCl
with a rectangular sample geometry, providing a good fit to the measured NMR
spectra. This calculation is also applicable to diamagnetic or ferromagnetic

The C-Band All-Sky Survey: Instrument design, status, and first-look data
The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS) aims to produce sensitive, all-sky maps of
diffuse Galactic emission at 5 GHz in total intensity and linear polarization.
These maps will be used (with other surveys) to separate the several
astrophysical components contributing to microwave emission, and in particular
will allow an accurate map of synchrotron emission to be produced for the
subtraction of foregrounds from measurements of the polarized Cosmic Microwave
Background. We describe the design of the analog instrument, the optics of our
6.1 m dish at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory, the status of observations,

Franck-Condon Factors and Radiative Lifetime of the A^{2}\Pi_{1/2} - X^{2}\Sigma^{+} Transition of Ytterbium Monoflouride, YbF
The fluorescence spectrum resulting from laser excitation of the
A^{2}\Pi_{1/2} - X^{2}\Sigma^{+} (0,0) band of ytterbium monofluoride, YbF, has
been recorded and analyzed to determine the Franck-Condon factors. The measured
values are compared with those predicted from Rydberg-Klein-Rees (RKR)
potential energy curves. From the fluorescence decay curve the radiative
lifetime of the A^{2}\Pi_{1/2} state is measured to be 28\pm2 ns, and the
corresponding transition dipole moment is 4.39\pm0.16 D. The implications for
laser cooling YbF are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Molecular, mass spectral, and physiological analyses of orcokinins and orcokinin precursor-related peptides in the lobster Homarus americanus and the crayfish Procambarus clarkii
Recently, cDNAs encoding prepro-orcokinins were cloned from the crayfish Procambarus clarkii; these cDNAs encode multiple copies of four orcokinin isoforms as well as several other peptides. Using the translated open reading frames of the P. clarkii transcripts as queries, five ESTs encoding American lobster Homarus americanus orthologs were identified via BLAST analysis. From these clones, three cDNAs, each encoding one of two distinct prepro-hormones, were characterized. Predicted processing of the deduced prepro-hormones would generate 13 peptides, 12 of which are conserved between the 2 precursors: the orcokinins NFDEIDRSGFGFN (3 copies), NFDEIDRSGFGFH (2 copies) and NFDEIDRSGFGFV (2 copies), FDAFTTGFGHN (an orcomyotropin-related peptide), SSEDMDRLGFGFN, GDY(SO3)DVYPE, VYGPRDIANLY and SAE. Additionally, one of two longer peptides (GPIKVRFLSAIFIPIAAPARSSPQQDAAAGYTDGAPV or APARSSPQQDAAAGYTDGAPV) is predicted from each prepro-hormone. MALDI-FTMS analyses confirmed the presence of all predicted orcokinins, the orcomyotropin-related peptide, and three precursor-related peptides, SSEDMDRLGFGFN, GDYDVYPE (unsulfated) and VYGPRDIANLY, in H. americanus neural tissues. SAE and the longer, unshared peptides were not detected. Similar complements of peptides are predicted from P. clarkii transcripts; the majority of these were detected in its neural tissues with mass spectrometry. Truncated orcokinins not predicted from any precursor were also detected in both species. Consistent with previous studies in the crayfish Orconectes limosus, NFDEIDRSGFGFN increased mid-/hindgut motility in P. clarkii. Surprisingly, the same peptide, although native to H. americanus, did not affect gut motility in this species. Together, our results provide the framework for future investigations of the regulation and physiological function of orcokinins/orcokinin precursor-related peptides in astacideans. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. MRCK-1 Drives Apical Constriction in C. elegans by Linking Developmental Patterning to Force Generation
Apical constriction is a change in cell shape that drives key morphogenetic events including gastrulation and neural tube formation. Apical force-producing actomyosin networks drive apical constriction by contracting while connected to cell-cell junctions. The mechanisms by which developmental patterning regulates these actomyosin networks and associated junctions with spatial precision are not fully understood. Here, we identify a myosin light chain kinase MRCK-1 as a key regulator of C. elegans gastrulation that integrates spatial and developmental patterning information. We show that MRCK-1 is required for activation of contractile actomyosin dynamics and elevated cortical tension in the apical cell cortex of endodermal precursor cells. MRCK-1 is apically localized by active Cdc42 at the external, cell-cell contact-free surfaces of apically constricting cells, downstream of cell fate determination mechanisms. We establish that the junctional components α-catenin, β-catenin, and cadherin become highly enriched at the apical junctions of apically-constricting cells, and that MRCK-1 and myosin activity are required in vivo for this enrichment. Taken together, our results define mechanisms that position a myosin activator to a specific cell surface where it both locally increases cortical tension and locally enriches junctional components to facilitate apical constriction. These results reveal crucial links that can tie spatial information to local force generation to drive morphogenesis
CMB observations from the CBI and VSA: A comparison of coincident maps and parameter estimation methods
We present coincident observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB)
from the Very Small Array (VSA) and Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) telescopes.
The consistency of the full datasets is tested in the map plane and the Fourier
plane, prior to the usual compression of CMB data into flat bandpowers. Of the
three mosaics observed by each group, two are found to be in excellent
agreement. In the third mosaic, there is a 2 sigma discrepancy between the
correlation of the data and the level expected from Monte Carlo simulations.
This is shown to be consistent with increased phase calibration errors on VSA
data during summer observations. We also consider the parameter estimation
method of each group. The key difference is the use of the variance window
function in place of the bandpower window function, an approximation used by
the VSA group. A re-evaluation of the VSA parameter estimates, using bandpower

siRNA Knockdown of Ribosomal Protein Gene RPL19 Abrogates the Aggressive Phenotype of Human Prostate Cancer
We provide novel functional data that posttranscriptional silencing of gene RPL19 using RNAi not only abrogates the malignant phenotype of PC-3M prostate cancer cells but is selective with respect to transcription and translation of other genes. Reducing RPL19 transcription modulates a subset of genes, evidenced by gene expression array analysis and Western blotting, but does not compromise cell proliferation or apoptosis in-vitro. However, growth of xenografted tumors containing the knocked-down RPL19 in-vivo is significantly reduced. Analysis of the modulated genes reveals induction of the non-malignant phenotype principally to involve perturbation of networks of transcription factors and cellular adhesion genes. The data provide evidence that extra-ribosomal regulatory functions of RPL19, beyond protein synthesis, are critical regulators of cellular phenotype. Targeting key members of affected networks identified by gene expression analysis raises the possibility of therapeutically stabilizing a benign phenotype generated by modulating the expression of an individual gene and thereafter constraining a malignant phenotype while leaving non-malignant tissues unaffected
AMI observations of Lynds Dark Nebulae: further evidence for anomalous cm-wave emission
Observations at 14.2 to 17.9 GHz made with the AMI Small Array towards
fourteen Lynds Dark Nebulae with a resolution of 2' are reported. These sources
are selected from the SCUBA observations of Visser et al. (2001) as small
angular diameter clouds well matched to the synthesized beam of the AMI Small
Array. Comparison of the AMI observations with radio observations at lower
frequencies with matched uv-plane coverage is made, in order to search for any
anomalous excess emission which can be attributed to spinning dust. Possible
emission from spinning dust is identified as a source within a 2' radius of the
Scuba position of the Lynds dark nebula, exhibiting an excess with respect to
lower frequency radio emission. We find five sources which show a possible
spinning dust component in their spectra. These sources have rising spectral
indices in the frequency range 14.2--17.9 GHz. Of these five one has already
been reported, L1111, we report one new definite detection, L675, and three new
probable detections (L944, L1103 and L1246). The relative certainty of these
detections is assessed on the basis of three criteria: the extent of the
emission, the coincidence of the emission with the Scuba position and the
likelihood of alternative explanations for the excess. Extended microwave
emission makes the likelihood of the anomalous emission arising as a
consequence of a radio counterpart to a protostar or a proto-planetary disk
unlikely. We use a 2' radius in order to be consistent with the IRAS
identifications of dark nebulae (Parker 1988), and our third criterion is used
in the case of L1103 where a high flux density at 850 microns relative to the
FIR data suggests a more complicated emission spectrum.Comment: submitted MNRA
