    Voltage-temperature charge verification testing of 34 ampere-hour nickel-cadmium cells

    This testing was designed to evaluate various voltage-temperature (V-T) charge curves for use in low-Earth-orbit (LEO) applications of nickel-cadmium battery cells. The trends established relating V-T level to utilizable capacity were unexpected. The trends toward lower capacity at higher V-T levels was predominant in this testing. This effect was a function of the V-T level, the temperature, and the cell history. This effect was attributed to changes occurring in the positive plate. The results imply that for some applications, the use of even lower V-T levels may be warranted. The need to limit overcharge, especially in the early phases of missions, is underlined by this test program

    Archaean and Proterozoic diamond growth from contrasting styles of large-scale magmatism

    Precise dating of diamond growth is required to understand the interior workings of the early Earth and the deep carbon cycle. Here we report Sm-Nd isotope data from 26 individual garnet inclusions from 26 harzburgitic diamonds from Venetia, South Africa. Garnet inclusions and host diamonds comprise two compositional suites formed under markedly different conditions and define two isochrons, one Archaean (2.95 Ga) and one Proterozoic (1.15 Ga). The Archaean diamond suite formed from relatively cool fluid-dominated metasomatism during rifting of the southern shelf of the Zimbabwe Craton. The 1.8 billion years younger Proterozoic diamond suite formed by melt-dominated metasomatism related to the 1.1 Ga Umkondo Large Igneous Province. The results demonstrate that resolving the time of diamond growth events requires dating of individual inclusions, and that there was a major change in the magmatic processes responsible for harzburgitic diamond formation beneath Venetia from the Archaean to the Proterozoic

    This study examines the relationship between the introduction of a four-course writing-intensive capstone series and improvement in inquiry and analysis skills of biology senior undergraduates. To measure the impact of the multicourse write-to-learn and peer-review pedagogy on student performance, we used a modified Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education rubric for Inquiry and Analysis and Written Communication to score senior research theses from 2006 to 2008 (pretreatment) and 2009 to 2013 (intervention). A Fisher-Freeman-Halton test and a two-sample Student's t test were used to evaluate individual rubric dimensions and composite rubric scores, respectively, and a randomized complete block design analysis of variance was carried out on composite scores to examine the impact of the intervention across ethnicity, legacy (e.g., first-generation status), and research laboratory. The results show an increase in student performance in rubric scoring categories most closely associated with science literacy and critical-thinking skills, in addition to gains in students' writing abilities

    Dust-Bounded ULIRGs? Model Predictions for Infrared Spectroscopic Surveys

    The observed faintness of infrared fine-structure line emission along with the warm far-infrared (FIR) colors of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) is a long-standing problem. In this work, we calculate the line and continuum properties of a cloud exposed to an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) and starburst spectral energy distribution (SED). We use an integrated modeling approach, predicting the spectrum of ionized, atomic, and molecular environments in pressure equilibrium. We find that the effects of high ratios of impinging ionizing radiation density to particle density (i.e. high ionization parameters, or U) can reproduce many ULIRG observational characteristics. Physically, as U increases, the fraction of UV photons absorbed by dust increases, corresponding to fewer photons available to photoionize and heat the gas, producing what is known as a "dust-bounded" nebula. We show that high U effects can explain the "[C II] deficit", the ~1 dex drop in the [C II] 158 micron /FIR ratio seen in ULIRGs when compared to starburst or normal galaxies. Additionally, by increasing U through increasing the ionizing photon flux, warmer dust and thus higher IRAS F(60)/F(100) ratios result. High U effects also predict an increase in [O I]63 micron /[C II] 158 micron and a gradual decline in [O III] 88 micron /FIR, similar to the magnitude of the trends observed, and yield a reasonable fit to [Ne V]14 micron /FIR ratio AGN observations.Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Histamine receptors (nomenclature as agreed by the NC-IUPHAR Subcommittee on Histamine Receptors [80, 174]) are activated by the endogenous ligand histamine. Marked species differences exist between histamine receptor orthologues [80]. The human and rat H3 receptor genes are subject to significant splice variance [12]. The potency order of histamine at histamine receptor subtypes is H3 = H4 > H2 > H1 [174]. Some agonists at the human H3 receptor display significant ligand bias [183]. Antagonists of all 4 histamine receptors have clinical uses: H1 antagonists for allergies (e.g. cetirizine), H2 antagonists for acid-reflux diseases (e.g. ranitidine), H3 antagonists for narcolepsy (e.g. pitolisant/WAKIX; Registered) and H4 antagonists for atopic dermatitis (e.g. adriforant; Phase IIa) [174] and vestibular neuritis (AUV) (SENS-111 (Seliforant, previously UR-63325), entered and completed vestibular neuritis (AUV) Phase IIa efficacy and safety trials, respectively) [217, 8]

    Modelling colossal magnetoresistance manganites

    I briefly survey here attempts to model the rich and strange behaviour of colossal magnetoresistance manganites, after outlining some of the phenomena observed in them, and describing the three relevant strong local interactions of the e_g electrons (in two different orbital states at each site), namely with Jahn-Teller phonon modes (strength g), with resident t_2g spins (ferromagnetic Hund's rule coupling J_H) and amongst each other (the Mott Hubbard correlation U) . A new two fluid model of nearly localized l polarons and band (b) electrons for low energy behaviour emerges for large g; some of its applications are mentioned here. I describe some results of strong coupling U, J_H calculations in single site DMFT (Dynamical Mean Field Theory), and show that in the wide orbital liquid regime many characteristic manganite phenomena such as an insulating ferromagnetic ground state, thermal insulator metal transition, colossal magnetoresistance (cmr), materials systematics and the observed low effective carrier density can all be understood qualitatively and quantitatively. We also discuss the two 'phase' coexistence frequently found in these systems, and show that electrostatic coulomb interactions mute lb phase separation into nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity with l regions and b puddles. Finally, some problems of current interest as well as general ones arising, eg polarons and the physics of large electron phonon coupling g in the adiabatic regime, are mentioned
