Quaternary warping at Gorge Saddle, western Southland

    Get PDF
Gorge Saddle is one low point on a drainage divide between Fiordland and the Southland Plain. Eastward sloping Quaternary terraces east of the divide and westward sloping terraces to the west contain granitic pebbles which could have been derived only from the west. This suggests doming at the present divide concurrent with transport from the west

Moveable kidneys: an enquiry into its frequency, with remarks on the etiology, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment

I have endeavoured as far as my opportunities permitted , to show that the condition of renal mobility is one which occurs more often than is generally supposed. It is much more frequent in women than in men. The right kidney is much more frequently displaced than the left.Symptoms are often absent. It is a condition which is frequently discovered accidentc ally, during an examination in connection with some other condition, and without any previous suspicion of its presence. It has been known to produce hydronephrosis.Nephrorrhaphy properly performed upon properly selected cases, affords a safe and effectual means of alleviating the distressing symptoms which accompany them. Many cases of hitherto unexplained abdominal pain and intestinal disturbance might be attributed to this cause, if the subject were recognised as of greater clinical import, than can be assumed from the attention which it has received

Pedigree Validation Using Genetic Markers in an Intensively-Managed Taonga Species, the Critically Endangered Kakī (\u3cem\u3eHimantopus novaezelandiae\u3c/em\u3e)

Many species recovery programmes use pedigrees to understand the genetic ancestry of individuals to inform conservation management. However, incorrect parentage assignment may limit the accuracy of these pedigrees and subsequent management decisions. This is especially relevant for pedigrees that include wild individuals, where misassignment may not only be attributed to human error, but also promiscuity (i.e. extra-pair parentage) or egg-dumping (i.e. brood parasitism). Here, we evaluate pedigree accuracy in the socially monogamous and critically endangered kakī (black stilt, Himantopus novaezelandiae) using microsatellite allele-exclusion analyses for 56 wild family groups across three breeding seasons (2014–2016, n= 340). We identified 16 offspring where parentage was incorrectly assigned, representing 5.9% of all offspring. Of the 16 misassigned offspring, three can be attributed to non-kakī brood parasitism, one can be assigned to human error, but others cannot be readily distinguished between non-monogamous mating behaviours and human error. In the short term, we advise the continued use of microsatellites to identify misassigned offspring in the kakī pedigree, and to verify non-kakī brood parasitism. We also recommend the Department of Conservation’s Kakī Recovery Programme further evaluate the implications of pedigree error to the management of this critically endangered taonga species

Cooperativa Unión Cristiana de Productores de Cacao (UNCRISPROCA), is located in Siawas Community, La Cruz de Río Grande municipality. It was founded in 1997, by 112 members of the community. Cooperativa Unión Cristiana de Productores de Cacao (UNCRISPROCA) is currently working manually, they are having some issues in streamlining the investigation of information concerning the cooperative, they look for printed files on paper and manuscripts, all the information they need to prepare reports or reports of the cooperative, as well as inquiries of the members, production, affectations, totality of cocoa gathering, among others. With the creation of the data management system for the Cooperativa Unión Cristiana de Productores de Cacao (UNCRISPROCA), technological alternatives will be achieved to streamline the processes of control and registration, minimizing the search time and response of relevant information of the cooperative, with which the work of the administrator and the coordinator will be quick and effective, this will contribute to a strategic decision making, in terms of the effects of production. The system designed will allow a registry of the producers that exist in the area, the affectations to the sowings, locations of the plots, the total of hectares of cocoa of the UNCRISPROCA cooperative, allowing in this way a management of pertinent, effective and efficient information, improving the process in decision making.La Cooperativa Unión Cristiana de Productores de Cacao (UNCRISPROCA), se localiza en la Comunidad de Siawas, municipio de La Cruz de Río Grande. AIM: To explore the relationship between social capital (social networks, familial and close relationships) and risk perception amongst older female gamblers (50 years+) BACKGROUND: Despite significant investment in social marketing initiatives gambling harms persist. Predicted to live longer, poorer, and less healthy lives than men, older women are increasingly gambling online with gambling harms rising accordingly. Typically, older women are portrayed as being risk averse. However recent studies across several jurisdictions reveal significant shifts in risk perception in the domain of social risk. Yet little is known about how older women perceive gambling risk. This study provides an alternative to the psychological approaches that dominate gambling research. A social capital paradigm explores how older women perceive gambling risk and the socio-cultural perspectives that influence these perceptions. Research Questions: (RQ1) How do older women perceive gambling risk? and (RQ2) How does social capital influence gambling risk perceptions amongst older women?’ Methodology: Social Constructivist approach and Hermeneutic Phenomenology Methods: Hermeneutic Phenomenology, Qualitative Surveys and an Expert Mental Models Approach. Semi-structured individual interviews plus focus groups with gamblers, family and close friends/associates, gambling experts, social marketers, gambling legislators and gambling agencies. Theoretical Frameworks: Social Capital, Risk Perception, Social Network Theory To address and arrest gambling harms, social marketers need to understand how (older) women perceive gambling risk. Novel insights from this study can be used to inform social marketing, responsible gambling and health promotion initiatives targeting women’s gambling behaviors, using social capital and social networks to drive behavioral change

Flying in the face of environmental concern: why green consumers continue to fly.

    Get PDF
Some unsustainable consumer behaviours have proved extremely hard to change or even challenge. Despite the fact that flying can be more damaging than any other activity that an individual can undertake, many otherwise green consumers still choose to fly, offering an opportunity to elicit narratives about the differences between their attitudes and behaviours. Qualitative interview data were gathered from self-selected green consumers and set within a cognitive dissonance analytical framework. Four strategies were uncovered: not changing travel behaviour (but offering justifications related to travel product, travel context or personal identity); reducing or restricting flights; changing other behaviours to compensate for flying; and stopping flying. This analysis furthers research on green consumer rationales for (un)sustainable behaviours and suggests several avenues for sustainable marketing management

The Use of Telemedicine Access to Schools to Facilitate Expert Assessment of Children with Asthma

Research has shown that access to an asthma specialist improves asthma outcomes. We hypothesized that we could improve access to expert asthma care through a telemedicine link between an asthma specialist and a school-based asthma program. We conducted a prospective cohort study in 3 urban schools to ascertain the feasibility of using an asthma-focused telemedicine solution. Each subject was seen by an asthma expert at 0, 8, and 32 weeks. The assessment and recommendations for care were sent to the primary care physician (PCP) and parents were told to contact their physician for follow-up care. Eighty three subjects participated in the study. Subjects experienced improvement (P < .05) in family social activities and the number of asthma attacks. Ninety four percent of subjects rated the program as good or excellent. This study demonstrates the feasibility and acceptance of a school-based asthma program using a telemedicine link to an asthma specialist

“I don't like wonky carrots”- an exploration of children's perceptions of suboptimal fruits and vegetables

    Get PDF
Children's perceptions of suboptimal fruits and vegetables have not been studied in the suboptimal foods domain. Using two qualitative research methods, this study investigates children's (N = 97) edibility perceptions of suboptimal produce with varied appearance defects. The results show that unlike adult samples previously studied, children are more accepting of suboptimal produce. Defects in shape, size, and certain colour defects were positively perceived, reflecting retailers' opportunities to market suboptimal produce. High levels of brown discolorations and superficial blemishes were not acceptable, implying that produce with such defects could be repurposed as ingredients in foods prepared and sold in-store. These implications reflect retailers' opportunities in marketing suboptimal produce to children, who by their familial influence may also be able to get families to buy and consume suboptimal produce. The importance of familiarity in improving suboptimal food acceptance is also recognised for future research to explore
