Determinants and Effects of Innovative Activities in Vietnam. A Firm-level Analysis
This paper investigates the determinants of innovative activities and the innovation-performance relationship for the firm population in Vietnam in
three consecutive stages: decision â investment â outcome. Craggâs two-tiered dynamic type-2 Tobit model and instrumental variable GMM method are applied to
control for the selectivity and endogeneity of R&D and innovation. After controlling for ownership types, industry and regional fixed-effects, key findings
include: (i) R&D and innovation activities not only stimulate firmsâ profitability and growth of sales, but also increase their survival propensity; (ii)
private innovative firms significantly outperform their peers whereas the combination of young, small, and innovative characteristics in young innovative
companies (YICs) does not bring the expected higher entrepreneurial performance as how it works in advanced countries; (iii) highly-leveraged firms,
exporting firms, and diversified firms are more likely to be innovative than their counterparts, but the ability to transform innovative efforts into higher
profitability and growth can only be witnessed among diversified firms; and (iv) firms being endowed with larger asset pool have more favorable conditions to
engage in innovation activities, but do not necessarily produce superior performance relatively to their smaller counterparts. However, firm labor
size is positively associated with both R&D intensity and entrepreneurial performance of firms. The dataset of population of existing firms (from 2000 to
2005) extracted from the annual enterprise survey conducted by Vietnam General Statistics Organization (GSO) is used for the empirical analysis
Diversification Strategies and Firm Performance: A Sample Selection Approach
This paper is based upon the assumption that firm profitability is determined by its degree of diversification which in turn is strongly related to the antecedent decision to carry out diversification activities. This calls for an empirical approach that permits the joint analysis of the three interrelated and consecutive stages of the overall diversification process: diversification decision, degree of diversification, and outcome of diversification. We apply parametric and semiparametric approaches to control for sample selection and endogeneity of diversification decision in both static and dynamic models. After controlling for industry fixed-effects, empirical evidence from firm-level data shows that diversification has a curvilinear effect on profitability: it improves firmsâ profit up to a point, after which a further increase in diversification is associated with declining performance. This implies that firms should consider optimal levels of product diversification when they expand product offerings beyond their core business. Other worth-noting findings include: (i) factors stimulating firms to diversify do not necessarily encourage them to extend their diversification strategy; (ii) firms which are endowed with highly skilled human capital are likely to successfully exploit diversification as an engine of growth; (iii) while industry performance does not influence profitability of firms, it impacts their diversification decision and degree
Determinants of Novice, Portfolio and Serial Entrepreneurship: An Occupational Choice Approach
In this paper we present an occupational choice model for entrepreneurs, in which, based on their individual skills and on the quality of their business, entrepreneurs can keep their original business, open a new business in the same or another sector along the current business (portfolio entrepreneur), shut it down to either start a new one (serial entrepreneur) or to turn to dependent employment. We test our theory using a 10-year panel dataset (2001 to 2010) of more than 4,000 Vietnamese manufacturing firms. We estimate an occupational choice model and a survival model and find that: (i) a greater endowment of human capital is associated with a higher likelihood to become a serial or a portfolio entrepreneur; (ii) A higher quality of the new business is associated to a higher likelihood of being habitual entrepreneurs. Particularly, high entrepreneurial skills together with a high-quality business positively influence the likelihood to be serial or portfolio; (iii) novice entrepreneurs with high entrepreneurial skill and a high-quality business are more likely to keep their business
CSR motivators of local firms in a developing country: a case study in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam
This research explores firmsâ motivators to engage in corporate social responsibility
(CSR) actions from the middle managersâ perspective. In-depth interviews were
conducted with 27 middle managers from Quang Ninh province in Vietnam. Using
Carrollâs (1991) CSR pyramid model as the framework for qualitative data analysis,
the research finds that, through the middle managersâ lens, firms are motivated to
engage with CSR for necessity and sufficiency. The necessity components are
profitability, competitive advantage, law compliance, and anti-bureaucracy
achievements serving as the maintenance factors; and the sufficient components known
as encouraging factors include employee retention, ethical image and reputation. The
research contributes to the extension of Carrollâs (1991) CSR pyramid model to the
context of local firms in a developing country
K.Marx-Engels and Ho Chi Minh Viewpoints on Journalism - and Two Fake News Publishing Cases of Thanhnien.vn and Tuoitre.vn (Online Magazines) in Vietnam and Lessons from Indonesia, Japan Approaches
In this paper, by using qualitative analytical analysis with 2 case examples of Thanh nien and Tuoi tre newspapers (online) in Vietnam, in which there are history of publishing fakes news online from 2015, 2016, 2018, 2022 (with very bad editors Nguyen Ngoc Toan and Dang Thi Phuong Thao), as well as giaoduc.edu.vn and vietnamnet.vn in 2022 so we will address some points in this study based on answers for question: âWhat are regulatory lessons from Indonesia and Japan approaches on publishing fake news?â. We would suggest that there are penalties for negative behaviors of posting fake news online (any fake information) in the context of covid 19 epidemic. Tapsell (2019) defined âhoax newsâ as similar to the more globally recognized term âfake newsâ: material deliberately fabricated and masqueraded as truth. At last, we will draw some lessons from K.Marx and Ho Chi Minh viewpoints on journalism for educating young generation in emerging markets such as Vietnam
Effects of seeds treated with cobalt nanoparticles on germination, growth, yield and quality of soybean cultivar DT12
Seed treatment using metallic nanoparticles to stimulate germination and improve crop yields has been published and widely applied in agriculture production. To assess the safety of such methods on plants, the effectiveness and safety of the treatment of soybean Glycine max L. DT12 seeds with cobalt nanoparticles (nCo) before sowing were investigated. Seeds of soybean cultivar DT12 were treated with nCo at two different concentrations (0.165 and 1.65 mg/kg seed) before sowing. Germination rate, growth speed, soybean yield and bean nutrient components were examined throughout a season. Results implied that at a concentration of 0.165 mg/kg, nCo significantly increased germination rates, plant heights, total pods per plant, number of pods having 3 seeds, and crop productivity compared to both the control and seeds treated with a highter concentration of 16.5 mg per kg of seed. However, no significant differences were found between treatments in terms of growth level and seed nutrient contents, including moisture, ash content, mineral (K, Mg and Fe) and crude protein components. In seeds treated with higher concentration, the Ca content was dramatically lower than that of the control and seeds treated with a low concentration, but bean quality was not affected. This study contributes to the effective and sustainable application of nanomaterials in Vietnamese agriculture.
Dynamic association between energy transition technologies, renewable energy production, trade openness, green investment, carbon tax, and carbon neutrality: empirical evidences from China
The existing millennium documents the most adverse consequences
of global warming which in contrast to pre-industrial era are
more devastating. Thus, these prevailing consequences raise
numerous concerns regarding the well-being of future and current
generation. Scholars, in this regard, are putting efforts punctiliously
towards methods that could halt the surging emissions. This paper
also attempts to contributes to existing literature by reporting the
empirical evidences regarding the role of energy transition technologies,
renewable energy production (REP), trade openness, green
investment, and carbon taxes in carbon neutrality in Chinse economy
covering the time span of 1980â2020. By employing Dynamic
Auto-regressive Distributed Lags (DARDL) model to check the association,
findings exposed that electricity production from water
sources, electricity production from solar sources, REP, trade openness,
green investment, and carbon taxes are negatively correlated
with CO2 emissions. Study offers policymakers a help in formulating
policies related to achieve carbon neutrality using renewable
sources of energy production, carbon taxes, and green investmen
Publishing Fake Information Online-Case of Online Vietnam Magazines (Thanhnien Newspaper, Tuoi tre newspaper, Vietnamnet.vn, dantri.com.vn, giaoduc.edu.vn, sctv.com.vn, etc.) From an Approach of German and EU Laws and Cybersecurity Regulations
Publishing fake information have at least three bad effects on the community: creating disinformation, anxiety, and disorder in society.
Still using qualitative analytical methods with synthesis and inductive methods, the authors will address 2 cases of Vietnam magazines: thanhnien. vn and tuoitre.vn, vietnamnet. vn, giaoduc.edu.vn, dantri.com.vn, (online newspapers) and recently sctv.com.vn with their issue of publishing fake news online, which increasing as a problem in recent years 2015-2020. In this paper, we also use the European approach and laws on exploring the issue of publishing and delivering false information via the internet and social media. Last but not least, the views and ideologies of V.I Lenin and Ho Chi Minh on journalism and journalists are mentioned for educating the young generation
Acetate wheat starch improving blood glucose response and bilan lipid on obesity dyslipidemia mice
Resistant starch is particularly concerned with beneficial effects in regulating blood glucose concentration and lipid metabolism, reducing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to validate the effects of wheat starch acetate containing 32.1% resistant starch on postprandial blood glucose response and lipid profile on obesity, dyslipidemia Swiss mice induced by a high-fat diet. The result showed that there was a restriction on postprandial hyperglycemia and remained stable for 2 hours after meal efficiently comparing with the control group fed natural wheat starch. Simultaneously, when maintaining the dose of 5g/kg once or twice a day for 8 weeks, wheat starch acetate to be able to reduce body weight and blood glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol levels compared to the control group (p<0.05)
Strategic Risk Determinants Influencing Growth of SMEs: The Case of Vietnam
Risk is inherent in all business functions and in every kind of activities. This is especially true for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that are most exposed to the harmful effects of the risks, due to limited resources and structural features. Therefore, this study is conducted for identifying the relationship and impact strategic risk determinants including Political risks, Technological risks, Social risks on the growth of 30 small and medium forest enterprises (SMFEs) in Dien Bien as the case study. Political risks, Technological risks, Social risks are independent variables and the growth of SMFEs is a dependent variable. Data were collected through the questionnaire survey and using mean, correlation and regression analysis for this paper. The results show that there is a statistically significant negative correlation between strategic risk determinants on SMFEs growth.
