    The Royal Philharmonic Society of Sydney, formed as the Sydney Philharmonic Society in 1885, represented the rich tradition of amateur choral organisations present in Sydney in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Under the strong leadership of two of their conductors, Roberto Hazon and Joseph Bradley, the Philharmonic Society presented the Sydney and Australian premieres of many choral works, engaged the services of many international vocal soloists, performed for full houses, and was invited to perform at many important civic and state events. Yet this organisation has been forgotten by history and the Sydney music community. Although many issues contributed to the decline of this amateur organisation, the strongest factors included the Philharmonic’s inability to maintain consistency in their leadership in later years, a change in general musical trends from amateur vocal performances to professional orchestral concerts, an increase in competition from other entertainments, the establishment of the ABC, and an ongoing lack of support from the city and state governments. These were further exacerbated by the lack of support from members of the Sydney press, particularly the Sydney Morning Herald. Therefore, an in-depth study into the story of the Royal Philharmonic Society of Sydney not only uncovers the history of a forgotten music organisation, it also contributes to a deeper understanding of the musical performance culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Sydney

    An evaluation of a multi-site community pharmacy based chronic obstructive pulmonary disease support service

    Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive chronic condition which can be effectively managed by smoking cessation, optimising prescribed therapy and providing treatment to prevent chest infections from causing hospitalisation. The government agenda in the UK is for community pharmacists to become involved in chronic disease management and COPD is one area where they are ideally located to provide a comprehensive service. Objective To evaluate the effect of a community pharmacy based COPD service on patient outcomes. Method Patients in one UK location were recruited over a 3 month period to receive a community pharmacy based COPD support service consisting of signposting to or provision of smoking cessation service, therapy optimisation, and recommendation to obtain a rescue pack containing steroid and antibiotic to prevent hospitalisation as a result of chest infection. Data was collected over a six month period for all recruited patients. Appropriate clinical outcomes, patient reported medication adherence, quality of life and NHS resource utilisation were measured. Key findings 306 patients accessed the service and full data to enable comparison before and after was available for 137. Significant improvements in patient reported adherence, utilisation of rescue packs, quality of life and a reduction in routine GP visits were identified. The intervention cost was estimated to be off-set by reductions in the use of other NHS services (GP and A&E visits and hospital admissions). Conclusion Results suggest that the service improved patient medicine taking behaviours and that it was cost-effective

    Investigation of the Repassivation Process of CoCrMo in Simulated Biological Fluids

    A thorough investigation into the repassivation process of CoCrMo in multiple simulated biological environments has been undertaken, looking in detail at both the kinetics and composition of the reformed oxide film. Specific focus of this research was aimed at determining the effect of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on these features. The kinetics of repassivation were obtained by using a variety of electrochemical techniques. The current transients formed were fitted to a second-order decay curve, which accouts for two separate phases: coverage and growth. The reformation of the passive film was fastest in a phosphate buffered saline environment, with the presence of BSA delaying this process because it inhibits the oxygen-reduction reaction as it obstructs the active sites of the alloy when adsorbed onto the surface. The composition of the newly formed film was analyzed with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As expected, the film was primarily composed of chromium (III) oxide with small contributions from cobalt and molybdenum oxides. In the presence of BSA, the quantity of molybdenum within the film was drastically reduced; it was shown to be extracted into the bulk solution via inductively coupled mass spectroscopy. This is observed because BSA is able to complex preferentially to the molybdenum ions when the alloy is exposed, extracting them into solution and altering the composition and integrity of the film

    Infrared dust emission in the outer disk of M51

    We examine faint infrared emission features detected in Spitzer Space Telescope images of M51, which are associated with atomic hydrogen in the outer disk and tidal tail at R greater than R_25 (4.9', ~14 kpc at d=9.6 Mpc). The infrared colors of these features are consistent with the colors of dust associated with star formation in the bright disk. However, the star formation efficiency (as a ratio of star formation rate to neutral gas mass) implied in the outer disk is lower than that in the bright disk of M51 by an order of magnitude, assuming a similar relationship between infrared emission and star formation rate in the inner and outer disks.Comment: 13 pages in manuscript form, 2 figures; download PDF of manuscript with original-resolution Figure 1 at http://www.eg.bucknell.edu/physics/thornley/thornleym51.pd

    COVID-19 Experiences, Behaviors, Beliefs, and Well-Being Among Students and Employees at a University In Rural Appalachia: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Introduction: In response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, most universities experienced drastic operational changes with shifts to online learning, work-from-home policies, and social distancing measures. These changes have caused concern for social isolation and mental health. Purpose: This cross-sectional study explores differences in COVID-19 experiences, behaviors, beliefs, and well-being among students and employees (faculty and staff) at a rural Appalachian university. Methods: Data were collected with an online anonymous survey in September-October 2020 using convenience sampling. The survey measured multiple domains including COVID-19-related 1) beliefs, 2) symptoms and diagnoses, 3) exposure and preventive behavior, and 4) social, mental, and financial health. Chi-square tests and linear regression models were used to determine differences in survey responses between students and employees. Results: The final sample used for analysis included 416 respondents. The majority of respondents believed COVID-19 was a serious disease and followed mask and social distancing guidelines, although employees were more likely to adhere to mask and social distancing guidelines compared to students. Most of the respondents (\u3e50%) reported feeling more stressed, anxious, and sad since the pandemic began. Students were more impacted by the pandemic compared to employees as measured by the mental, social, and financial impact scale. A limitation of this study was that convenience sampling was used instead of a probability sampling technique, which limits the inference that can be made from the results. Implications: There may be a need for greater mental health support among university employees and students. However, future studies should confirm these findings

    Uncovering Spiral Structure in Flocculent Galaxies

    We present K'(2.1 micron) observations of four nearby flocculent spirals, which clearly show low-level spiral structure and suggest that kiloparsec-scale spiral structure is more prevalent in flocculent spirals than previously supposed. In particular, the prototypical flocculent spiral NGC 5055 is shown to have regular, two-arm spiral structure to a radius of 4 kpc in the near infrared, with an arm-interarm contrast of 1.3. The spiral structure in all four galaxies is weaker than that in grand design galaxies. Taken in unbarred galaxies with no large, nearby companions, these data are consistent with the modal theory of spiral density waves, which maintains that density waves are intrinsic to the disk. As an alternative, mechanisms for driving spiral structure with non-axisymmetric perturbers are also discussed. These observations highlight the importance of near infrared imaging for exploring the range of physical environments in which large-scale dynamical processes, such as density waves, are important.Comment: 12 pages AASTeX; 3 compressed PS figures can be retrieved from ftp://ftp.astro.umd.edu/pub/michele as file thornley.tar (1.6Mbytes).     Pain and Function in the Runner a Ten (din) uous Link

    A male runner (30 years old; 10-km time: 33 min, 46 sec) had been running with suspected insertional Achilles tendinopathy (AT) for ~2 years when the pain reached a threshold that prevented running. Diagnostic ultrasound (US), prior to a high-volume stripping injection, confirmed right-sided medial insertional AT. The athlete failed to respond to injection therapy and ceased running for a period of 5 weeks. At the beginning of this period, the runner completed the Victoria institute of sports assessment-Achilles questionnaire (VISA-A), the foot and ankle disability index (FADI), and FADI sport prior to undergoing an assessment of bi-lateral gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscle architecture (muscle thickness (MT) and pennation angle (PA); US), muscle contractile properties (maximal muscle displacement (Dm) and contraction time (Tc); Tensiomyography (TMG)) and calf endurance (40 raises/min). VISA-A and FADI scores were 59%/100% and 102/136 respectively. Compared to the left leg, the right GM had a lower MT (1.60 cm vs. 1.74 cm), a similar PA (22.0° vs. 21.0°), a lower Dm (1.2 mm vs. 2.0 mm) and Tc (16.5 ms vs. 17.7 ms). Calf endurance was higher in the right leg compared to the left (48 vs. 43 raises). The athlete began a metronome-guided (15 BPM), 12-week progressive eccentric training protocol using a weighted vest (1.5 kg increments per week), while receiving six sessions of shockwave therapy concurrently (within 5 weeks). On returning to running, the athlete kept daily pain (Numeric Rating Scale; NRS) and running scores (miles*rate of perceived exertion (RPE)). Foot and ankle function improved according to scores recorded on the VISA-A (59% vs. 97%) and FADI (102 vs. 127/136). Improvements in MT (1.60 cm vs. 1.76 cm) and PA (22.0° vs. 24.8°) were recorded via US. Improvements in Dm (1.15 mm vs. 1.69 mm) and Tc (16.5 ms vs. 15.4 ms) were recorded via TMG. Calf endurance was lower in both legs and the asymmetry between legs remained (L: 31, R: 34). Pain intensity (mean weekly NRS scores) decreased between week 1 and week 12 (6.6 vs. 2.9), while running scores increased (20 vs. 38) during the same period. The program was maintained up to week 16 at which point mean weekly NRS was 2.2 and running score was 47
