    Does certification work in emerging markets? evidence from the Indian IPO market

    There is inconclusive evidence regarding the economic value of certification in the context of IPOs in developed markets. Using a natural experiment of regulator mandated IPO grading requirement, we examine the effects of third-party certification in the Indian IPO market. We summarize our empirical results below. First, underpricing is unaffected by the grading process. Second, stock price informativeness as proxied by idiosyncratic volatility increases significantly due to IPO grading process. Third, retail and institutional subscription levels are significantly positively associated with IPO grades after controlling for other certification mechanisms such as underwriter reputation, group affiliation, analyst recommendation and venture capital backing. Finally, using a pseudo grading process we conclude that IPO grades are not mechanically derivable from publicly available information. In a nutshell, we use our unique setting to examine the usefulness of certification in emerging markets with institutional voids

    Efficient simulations with electronic open boundaries

    We present a reformulation of the Hairy Probe method for introducing electronic open boundaries that is appropriate for steady state calculations involving non-orthogonal atomic basis sets. As a check on the correctness of the method we investigate a perfect atomic wire of Cu atoms, and a perfect non-orthogonal chain of H atoms. For both atom chains we find that the conductance has a value of exactly one quantum unit, and that this is rather insensitive to the strength of coupling of the probes to the system, provided values of the coupling are of the same order as the mean inter-level spacing of the system without probes. For the Cu atom chain we find in addition that away from the regions with probes attached, the potential in the wire is uniform, while within them it follows a predicted exponential variation with position. We then apply the method to an initial investigation of the suitability of graphene as a contact material for molecular electronics. We perform calculations on a carbon nanoribbon to determine the correct coupling strength of the probes to the graphene, and obtain a conductance of about two quantum units corresponding to two bands crossing the Fermi surface. We then compute the current through a benzene molecule attached to two graphene contacts and find only a very weak current because of the disruption of the π-conjugation by the covalent bond between the benzene and the graphene. In all cases we find that very strong or weak probe couplings suppress the current

    Non-close-packed breath figures via ion-partitioning-mediated self-assembly

    We report a one-step method of forming non-close-packed (NCP) pore arrays of micro- and sub-micropores using chloroform-based solutions of polystyrene acidified with hydrogen bromide for breath figure (BF) patterning. As BF patterning takes place, water vapor condenses onto the polystyrene solution, forming water droplets on the solution surface. Concurrently, preferential ion partitioning of hydrogen bromide leads to positively charged water droplets, which experience interdroplet electrostatic repulsion. Self-organization of charged water droplets because of surface flow and subsequent evaporation of the droplet templates result in ordered BF arrays with pore separation/diameter (L/D) ratios of up to 16.5. Evidence from surface potential scans show proof for preferential ion partitioning of HBr. Radial distribution functions and Voronoi polygon analysis of pore arrays show that they possess a high degree of conformational order. Past fabrication methods of NCP structures typically require multi-step processes. In contrast, we have established a new route for facile self-assembly of previously inaccessible patterns, which comprises of only a single operational step

    Effect of Extracellular pH on Selectin Adhesion: Theory and Experiment

    AbstractSelectins mediate circulatory leukocyte trafficking to sites of inflammation and trauma, and the extracellular microenvironments at these sites often become acidic. In this study, we investigated the influence of slightly acidic pH on the binding dynamics of selectins (P-, L-, and E-selectin) to P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) via computational modeling (molecular dynamics) and experimental rolling assays under shear in vitro. The P-selectin/PSGL-1 binding is strengthened at acidic pH, as evidenced by the formation of a new hydrogen bond (seen computationally) and the observed decrease in the rolling velocities of model cells. In the case of L-selectin/PSGL-1 binding dynamics, the binding strength and frequency increase at acidic pH, as indicated by the greater cell-rolling flux of neutrophils and slower rolling velocities of L-selectin-coated microspheres, respectively. The cell flux is most likely due to an increased population of L-selectin in the high-affinity conformation as pH decreases, whereas the velocities are due to increased L-selectin/PSGL-1 contacts. In contrast to P- and L-selectin, the E-selectin/PSGL-1 binding does not exhibit significant changes at acidic pH levels, as shown both experimentally and computationally

    Population Pharmacokinetic Modeling To Estimate the Contributions of Genetic and Nongenetic Factors to Efavirenz Disposition

    Efavirenz pharmacokinetics is characterized by large between-subject variability, which determines both therapeutic response and adverse effects. Some of the variability in efavirenz pharmacokinetics has been attributed to genetic variability in cytochrome P450 genes that alter efavirenz metabolism, such as CYP2B6 and CYP2A6. While the effects of additional patient factors have been studied, such as sex, weight, and body mass index, the extent to which they contribute to variability in efavirenz exposure is inconsistently reported. The aim of this analysis was to develop a pharmacometric model to quantify the contribution of genetic and nongenetic factors to efavirenz pharmacokinetics. A population-based pharmacokinetic model was developed using 1,132 plasma efavirenz concentrations obtained from 73 HIV-seronegative volunteers administered a single oral dose of 600 mg efavirenz. A two-compartment structural model with absorption occurring by zero- and first-order processes described the data. Allometric scaling adequately described the relationship between fat-free mass and apparent oral clearance, as well as fat mass and apparent peripheral volume of distribution. Inclusion of fat-free mass and fat mass in the model mechanistically accounted for correlation between these disposition parameters and sex, weight, and body mass index. Apparent oral clearance of efavirenz was reduced by 25% and 51% in subjects predicted to have intermediate and slow CYP2B6 metabolizer status, respectively. The final pharmacokinetic model accounting for fat-free mass, fat mass, and CYP2B6 metabolizer status was consistent with known mechanisms of efavirenz disposition, efavirenz physiochemical properties, and pharmacokinetic theory.     Determination of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Javanica and Leptospira interrogans serovar Bataviae as the persistent Leptospira serovars circulating in the urban rat populations in peninsular Malaysia

    Background: Leptospirosis is an emerging infectious disease of global significance, and is endemic in tropical countries, including Malaysia. Over the last decade, a dramatic increase of human cases was reported; however, information on the primary vector, the rat, and the Leptospira serovars circulating among the rat population is limited. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to isolate Leptospira and characterise the serovars circulating in the urban rat populations from selected main cities in Peninsular Malaysia. Methods: Rat trappings were carried out between October 2011 to February 2014 in five urban cities which were chosen as study sites to represent different geographical locations in Peninsular Malaysia. Microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and PCR were carried out to identify the Leptospiral serogroup and determine the pathogenic status of the isolates, respectively while pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR were used to characterize the isolates. Results: Three rat species were identified from the three hundred and fifty seven rats captured with Rattus rattus, being the dominant rat species (285, 80 %) followed by Rattus norgevicus (53, 15 %) and Rattus exulans (19, 5 %). Only 39 samples (11.0 %) were positive by culture and further confirmed as pathogenic Leptospira by PCR. Significant associations were shown between host infection with locality, season, host-age and species. Based on MAT, two serogroups were identified in the population namely; L. borgpetersenii serogroup Javanica (n = 16) and L. interrogans serogroup Bataviae (n = 23). Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) distinguished the two serovars in the urban rat populations: L. borgpetersenii serovar Javanica (41 %), and L. interrogans serovar Bataviae (59 %). RAPD-PCR yielded 14 distinct patterns and was found to be more discriminative than PFGE. Conclusions: This study confirms two Leptospira serovars circulating among the urban rats population in Peninsular Malaysia namely; L. borgpetersenii serovar Javanica and L. interrogans serovars Bataviae. Despite the low number of isolates obtained from the rat population, this study suggests that rodent control programs and disease surveillance may help to reduce the possible risk of disease transmission

    Quality of life of older rectal cancer patients is not impaired by a permanent stoma

    AbstractBackgroundThe current study was undertaken to investigate the impact of a stoma on the HRQL with a special focus on age.Materials and methodsUsing the Eindhoven Cancer Registry, rectal cancer patients diagnosed between 1998 and 2007 in 4 hospitals were identified. All patients underwent TME surgery. Survivors were approached to complete the SF-36 and EORTC QLQ-C38 questionnaires. HRQL scores of the four groups, stratified by stoma status (stoma/no stoma) and age at operation (<70 and ≥70), were compared. The SF-36 and the QLQ-CR38 sexuality subscale scores of the survivors were compared with an age- and sex-matched Dutch norm population.ResultsMedian follow-up of 143 patients was 3.4 years. Elderly had significantly worse physical function (p = 0.0003) compared to younger patients. Elderly (p = 0.005) and patients without a stoma (p = 0.009) had worse sexual functioning compared to younger patients and patients with a stoma. Older males showed more sexual dysfunction (p = 0.01) when compared to younger males. In comparison with the normative population, elderly with a stoma had worse physical function (p < 0.01), but slightly better mental health (p < 0.05). Elderly without a stoma had better emotional role function (p < 0.01), and younger patients had worse sexual functioning and enjoyment (both p < 0.0001).ConclusionsOlder patients with a stoma have comparable HRQL to older patients without a stoma or the normative population, indicating the feasibility of a permanent stoma for elderly patients with a low situated rectal carcinoma. The negative impact of treatment on sexual functioning as found in the current study calls for further attention to alleviate this problem in sexually active patients

    In the context of emerging infectious diseases, enteric fever caused by Salmonella paratyphi A deserves increased attention and vigilance, although its severity is often milder than that of S. typhi disease. Outbreaks associated with this organism are exceedingly rare but have recently been reported in India (1) and Thailand. In India, the first reported outbreak of disease associated with S. paratyphi A (1) provided an opportunity to study the molecular epidemiology of infection caused by this organism
