    Perfectionism and Self-Stigma: The Moderating Effects of Exposure to Mental Illness

    Mental health statistics show that Canadian university students have elevated reports of stress, anxiety, depression, attempted and completed suicides. Yet, despite the rising statistics, only a small percentage of these individuals are seeking help for their concerns. This disconnect has been attributed to the barriers, both systemic and personal, experienced when seeking psychological help. One of these barriers, self-stigma, has been correlated with a decreased likelihood of seeking help. Research has found that individuals exhibiting higher levels of perfectionism are more likely to experience self-stigma, making these individuals especially vulnerable to not seeking assistance. However, a recent study (Zeifman et al., 2015) reported that contact with mental illness impacted this relationship in a sample of high school students, which prompted the research question: what are the moderating effects of contact with mental illness on the relationship of perfectionism to self-stigma of seeking psychological help (in a university sample)? A group of university students (N=180) completed an online survey questionnaire comprised of a demographic questionnaire, the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS, Hewitt & Flett, 1990), the Self-Stigma of Seeking Psychological Help scale (SSOSH, Vogel et al., 2006), and a Level of Contact Report (Holmes et al., 1999). Moderation analyses generated several findings. When level of contact with mental illness was low, for both self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism, there was no relationship between perfectionism and self-stigma. However, when contact with mental illness reached medium or high levels, there was a significant positive relationship between both types of perfectionism and self-stigma for seeking psychological help. As such, individuals who have a high exposure to mental illness who also exhibit high levels of either self-oriented or socially prescribed perfectionism are the most likely to experience self-stigma, and are therefore the least likely to seek psychological help. These findings are contrary to previous research, and are concerning given the vulnerable position of individuals high in perfectionism to various psychological concerns. Implications of these findings for practice and directions for future research are discussed

    A ROLE FOR RESEARCH IN INITIAL TEACHER EDUCATION ADMISSIONS: A CASE STUDY FROM ONE CANADIAN UNIVERSITY

    This article argues for the importance of broad and on-going research to support initial or pre-service teacher education program admissions. Examples from a large initial teacher education program at one Canadian university illustrate the contributions of research to the evaluation and refinement of admission processes. These examples include anonymous surveys and confidential interviews of current pre-service teachers about their experiences of answering application questions about their social identity, how they decided to apply to and attend the program, and their expectations of teacher education and teaching. Research studies about the perspectives of and agreement among the application raters are also discussed. Finally, how the operational needs of the admission processes shape the research agenda and the emerging research findings in turn shape the admission processes is explored

    Male involvement interventions and improved couples’ emotional relationships in Tanzania and Zimbabwe: ‘When we are walking together, I feel happy’

    Male involvement in maternal and child health is recognised as a valuable strategy to improve care-seeking and uptake of optimal home care practices for women and children in low- and middle-income settings. However, the specific mechanisms by which involving men can lead to observed behaviour change are not well substantiated. A qualitative study conducted to explore men’s and women’s experiences of male involvement interventions in Tanzania and Zimbabwe found that, for some women and men, the interventions had fostered more loving partner relationships. Both male and female participants identified these changes as profoundly meaningful and highly valued. Our findings illustrate key pathways by which male involvement interventions were able to improve couples’ emotional relationships. Findings also indicate that these positive impacts on couple relationships can motivate and support men’s behaviour change, to improve care-seeking and home care practices. Men’s and women’s subjective experiences of partner relationships following male involvement interventions have not been well documented to date. Findings highlight the importance of increased love, happiness and emotional intimacy in couple relationships – both as a wellbeing outcome valued by men and women, and as a contributor to the effectiveness of male involvement interventions

    The domesticated transposase ALP2 mediates formation of a novel Polycomb protein complex by direct interaction with MSI1, a core subunit of Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2)

    A large fraction of plant genomes is composed of transposable elements (TE), which provide a potential source of novel genes through "domestication"-the process whereby the proteins encoded by TE diverge in sequence, lose their ability to catalyse transposition and instead acquire novel functions for their hosts. In Arabidopsis, ANTAGONIST OF LIKE HETEROCHROMATIN PROTEIN 1 (ALP1) arose by domestication of the nuclease component of Harbinger class TE and acquired a new function as a component of POLYCOMB REPRESSIVE COMPLEX 2 (PRC2), a histone H3K27me3 methyltransferase involved in regulation of host genes and in some cases TE. It was not clear how ALP1 associated with PRC2, nor what the functional consequence was. Here, we identify ALP2 genetically as a suppressor of Polycomb-group (PcG) mutant phenotypes and show that it arose from the second, DNA binding component of Harbinger transposases. Molecular analysis of PcG compromised backgrounds reveals that ALP genes oppose silencing and H3K27me3 deposition at key PcG target genes. Proteomic analysis reveals that ALP1 and ALP2 are components of a variant PRC2 complex that contains the four core components but lacks plant-specific accessory components such as the H3K27me3 reader LIKE HETEROCHROMATION PROTEIN 1 (LHP1). We show that the N-terminus of ALP2 interacts directly with ALP1, whereas the C-terminus of ALP2 interacts with MULTICOPY SUPPRESSOR OF IRA1 (MSI1), a core component of PRC2. Proteomic analysis reveals that in alp2 mutant backgrounds ALP1 protein no longer associates with PRC2, consistent with a role for ALP2 in recruitment of ALP1. We suggest that the propensity of Harbinger TE to insert in gene-rich regions of the genome, together with the modular two component nature of their transposases, has predisposed them for domestication and incorporation into chromatin modifying complexes

    Postexposure prophylaxis with rVSV-ZEBOV following exposure to a patient with Ebola virus disease relapse in the United Kingdom: an operational, safety, and immunogenicity report

    Background: In October 2015, 65 people came into direct contact with a healthcare worker presenting with a late reactivation of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the UK. Vaccination was offered to 45 individuals with an initial assessment of high exposure risk. Methods: Approval for rapid expanded access to the recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus–Zaire Ebola virus vaccine (rVSV-ZEBOV) as an unlicensed emergency medicine was obtained from the relevant authorities. An observational follow-up study was carried out for 1 year following vaccination. Results: 26/45 individuals elected to receive vaccination between October 10th and 11th 2015 following written informed consent. By day 14, 39% had seroconverted, rising to 87% by day 28 and 100% by 3 months, although these responses were not always sustained. Neutralising antibody responses were detectable in 36% by day 14 and 73% at 12 months. Common side effects included fatigue, myalgia, headache, arthralgia and fever. These were positively associated with glycoprotein (GP)-specific T-cell but not IgM or IgG antibody responses. No severe vaccine-related adverse events were reported. No-one exposed to the virus became infected. Conclusions: This paper reports the use of the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine given as an emergency intervention to individuals exposed to a patient presenting with a late reactivation of EVD. The vaccine was relatively well tolerated but a high percentage developed a fever ≄37.5oC necessitating urgent screening for Ebola virus and a small number developed persistent arthralgia
