An Analog Model for Quantum Lightcone Fluctuations in Nonlinear Optics
We propose an analog model for quantum gravity effects using nonlinear
dielectrics. Fluctuations of the spacetime lightcone are expected in quantum
gravity, leading to variations in the flight times of pulses. This effect can
also arise in a nonlinear material. We propose a model in which fluctuations of
a background electric field, such as that produced by a squeezed photon state,
can cause fluctuations in the effective lightcone for probe pulses. This leads
to a variation in flight times analogous to that in quantum gravity. We make
some numerical estimates which suggest that the effect might be large enough to
be observable.Comment: 15 pages, no figure
Improved Determination of the Mass of the Light Hybrid Meson From QCD Sum Rules
We calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) -corrections to the
contributions of the condensates and in the
current-current correlator of the hybrid current
g\barq(x)\gamma_{\nu}iF_{\mu\nu}^aT^aq(x) using the external field method in
Feynman gauge. After incorporating these NLO contributions into the Laplace
sum-rules, the mass of the = light hybrid meson is recalculated
using the QCD sum rule approach. We find that the sum rules exhibit enhanced
stability when the NLO -corrections are included in the sum rule
analysis, resulting in a light hybrid meson mass of approximately 1.6
GeV.Comment: revtex4, 10 pages, 7 eps figures embedded in manuscrip
Optically opaque color-flavor locked phase inside compact stars
The contribution of thermally excited electron-positron pairs to the bulk
properties of the color-flavor locked quark phase inside compact stars is
examined. The presence of these pairs causes the photon mean free path to be
much smaller than a typical core radius ( km) for all
temperatures above 25 keV so that the photon contribution to the thermal
conductivity is much smaller than that of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. We also
find that the electrons and positrons dominate the electrical conductivity,
while their contributions to the total thermal energy is negligible.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures. Published versio
Energy calibration of large underwater detectors using stopping muons
We propose to use stopping cosmic-ray muons in the energy calibration of planned and deployed large underwater detectors. The method is based on the proportionality between the incident muon energy and the length of the muon path before it stops. Simultaneous measurements of the muon path and the amplitude of the signal from the photomultiplier tubes allow a relation between the energy deposited in the sensitive volume of the detector and the observed signal to be derived, and also provide a test of detector simulations. We describe the proposed method and present the results of simulations
Constraining fundamental constants of physics with quasar absorption line systems
We summarize the attempts by our group and others to derive constraints on
variations of fundamental constants over cosmic time using quasar absorption
lines. Most upper limits reside in the range 0.5-1.5x10-5 at the 3sigma level
over a redshift range of approximately 0.5-2.5 for the fine-structure constant,
alpha, the proton-to-electron mass ratio, mu, and a combination of the proton
gyromagnetic factor and the two previous constants, gp(alpha^2/mu)^nu, for only
one claimed variation of alpha. It is therefore very important to perform new
measurements to improve the sensitivity of the numerous methods to at least
<0.1x10-5 which should be possible in the next few years. Future
instrumentations on ELTs in the optical and/or ALMA, EVLA and SKA pathfinders
in the radio will undoutedly boost this field by allowing to reach much better
signal-to-noise ratios at higher spectral resolution and to perform
measurements on molecules in the ISM of high redshift galaxies.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Pore-scale Modeling of Viscous Flow and Induced Forces in Dense Sphere Packings
We propose a method for effectively upscaling incompressible viscous flow in
large random polydispersed sphere packings: the emphasis of this method is on
the determination of the forces applied on the solid particles by the fluid.
Pore bodies and their connections are defined locally through a regular
Delaunay triangulation of the packings. Viscous flow equations are upscaled at
the pore level, and approximated with a finite volume numerical scheme. We
compare numerical simulations of the proposed method to detailed finite element
(FEM) simulations of the Stokes equations for assemblies of 8 to 200 spheres. A
good agreement is found both in terms of forces exerted on the solid particles
and effective permeability coefficients
Particle Creation from Vacuum by Lorentz Violation
It is shown that the vacuum state in presence of Lorentz violation can be
followed by a particle-full universe that represents the current status of the
universe. In this model the modification in dispersion relation (Lorentz
violation) is picked up representing the regime of quantum gravity. The result
can be interpreted such that the existence of the particles is an evidence for
quantum effects of gravity in the past. It is concluded that only the vacuum
state is sufficient to appear the matter fields spontaneously after the process
of semi-classical analysis.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Spectrum of non-Hermitian heavy tailed random matrices
Let (X_{jk})_{j,k>=1} be i.i.d. complex random variables such that |X_{jk}|
is in the domain of attraction of an alpha-stable law, with 0< alpha <2. Our
main result is a heavy tailed counterpart of Girko's circular law. Namely,
under some additional smoothness assumptions on the law of X_{jk}, we prove
that there exists a deterministic sequence a_n ~ n^{1/alpha} and a probability
measure mu_alpha on C depending only on alpha such that with probability one,
the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues of the rescaled matrix a_n^{-1}
(X_{jk})_{1<=j,k<=n} converges weakly to mu_alpha as n tends to infinity. Our
approach combines Aldous & Steele's objective method with Girko's Hermitization
using logarithmic potentials. The underlying limiting object is defined on a
bipartized version of Aldous' Poisson Weighted Infinite Tree. Recursive
relations on the tree provide some properties of mu_alpha. In contrast with the
Hermitian case, we find that mu_alpha is not heavy tailed.Comment: Expanded version of a paper published in Communications in
