    A Handheld low-mass, impact instrument to measure nondestructive firmness of fruit

    A portable, handheld impact firmness sensor was designed for nondestructive measurement of fruit firmness while the fruit remain attached to the tree or for use in other remote locations where the use of a benchtop instrument would be impractical. The instrument design was based on the low-mass, constant velocity, impact-type measurement concept. Validation tests of the handheld sensor using `Bartlett' pears from orchards in California and Washington showed excellent agreement (r2 = 0.92 and 0.96, respectively) with both ASAE Standard method S368.2 for determining the apparent modulus of intact fruit and the impact firmness scores from a commercial benchtop impact firmness instrument

    The realisation that eaveryday electronics has ignored the spin of the carrier in favour of its charge is the foundation of the field of spintronics. Starting with simple two-terminal devices based on GMR and tunnel magnetoresistance, the technology has advanced to consider three-terminal devices that aim to combine spin sensitivity with a high current gain and a large current output. These devices require both efficient spin injection and semiconductor fabrication. In this paper, a discussion is presented of the design, operation and characteristics of the only spin transistor that has yielded a current gain greater than one in combination with reasonable output current

    Assessing liner performance using on-farm milk meters

    The primary objective of this study was to quantify and compare the interactive effects of liner compression, milking vacuum level, and pulsation settings on average milk flow rates for liners representing the range of liner compression of commercial liners. A secondary objective was to evaluate a methodology for assessing liner performance that can be applied on commercial dairy farms. Eight different liner types were assessed using 9 different combinations of milking system vacuum and pulsation settings applied to a herd of 80 cows with vacuum and pulsation conditions changed daily for 36d using a central composite experimental design. Liner response surfaces were created for explanatory variables milking system vacuum (Vsystem) and pulsator ratio (PR) and response variable average milk flow rate (AMF=total yield/total cups-on time) expressed as a fraction of the within-cow average flow rate for all treatments (average milk flow rate fraction, AMFf). Response surfaces were also created for between-liner comparisons for standardized conditions of claw vacuum and milk ratio (fraction of pulsation cycle during which milk is flowing). The highest AMFf was observed at the highest levels of Vsystem, PR, and overpressure. All liners showed an increase in AMF as milking conditions were changed from low to high standardized conditions of claw vacuum and milk ratio. Differences in AMF between liners were smallest at the most gentle milking conditions (low Vsystem and low milk ratio), and these between-liner differences in AMF increased as liner overpressure increased. Differences were noted with vacuum drop between Vsystem and claw vacuum depending on the liner venting system, with short milk tube vented liners having the greater vacuum drop than mouthpiece chamber vented liners. The accuracy of liner performance assessment in commercial parlors fitted with milk meters can be improved by using a central composite experimental design with a repeated center point treatment, rotating different clusters to different stalls (milk meters), and adjusting performance estimates for similar claw vacuum and pulsation conditions

    Bound States of Type I D-Strings

    We study the infra-red limit of the O(N) gauge theory that describes the low energy modes of a system of NN type I D-strings and provide some support to the conjecture that, in this limit, the theory flows to an orbifold conformal theory. We compute the elliptic genus of the orbifold theory and argue that its longest string sector describes the bound states of D-strings. We show that, as a result, the masses and multiplicities of the bound states are in agreement with the predictions of heterotic-type I duality in 9 dimensions, for all the BPS charges in the lattice Ī“(1,17)\Gamma_{(1,17)}.Comment: 14 pages, (AMS-)LaTex file using amstex.st

    Southward expansion: The myth of the West in the promotion of Florida, 1876ā€“1900

    This article examines the ways in which promoters and developers of Florida, in the decades after Reconstruction, engaged with a popular myth of the West as a means of recasting and selling their state to prospective settlers in the North and Midwest. The myth envisaged a cherished region to the west where worthy Americans could migrate and achieve social and economic independence away from the crowded confines of the East, or Europe. According to state immigration agents, land-promoters and other booster writers, Florida, although a Southern ex-Confederate state, offered precisely these 'western' opportunities for those hard-working Northerners seeking land and an opening for agrarian prosperity. However, the myth, which posited that, in the west, an individual's labour and thrift were rewarded with social and economic improvement, meshed awkwardly with the contemporary emergence of Florida as a popular winter destination for wealthy tourists and invalids seeking leisure and healthfulness away from the North. Yet it also reflected and reinforced promotional notions of racial improvement which would occur with an influx of enterprising Anglo-Americans, who would effectively displace the state's large African American population.     What makes medical students better listeners?

    Diagnosing heart conditions by auscultation is an important clinical skill commonly learnt by medical students. Clinical proficiency for this skill is in decline [1], and new teaching methods are needed. Successful discrimination of heartbeat sounds is believed to benefit mainly from acoustical training [2]. From recent studies of auditory training [3,4] we hypothesized that semantic representations outside the auditory cortex contribute to diagnostic accuracy in cardiac auscultation. To test this hypothesis, we analysed auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) which were recorded from medical students while they diagnosed quadruplets of heartbeat cycles. The comparison of trials with correct (Hits) versus incorrect diagnosis (Misses) revealed a significant difference in brain activity at 280-310 ms after the onset of the second cycle within the left middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and the right prefrontal cortex. This timing and locus suggest that semantic rather than acoustic representations contribute critically to auscultation skills. Thus, teaching auscultation should emphasize the link between the heartbeat sound and its meaning. Beyond cardiac auscultation, this issue is of interest for all fields where subtle but complex perceptual differences identify items in a well-known semantic context

    Parallel multicentre randomised trial of a clinical trial question prompt list in patients considering participation in phase 3 cancer treatment trials

    Accepted 9 February 2017Objective: To evaluate the effect of a clinical trial question prompt list in patients considering enrolment in cancer treatment trials. Setting: Tertiary cancer referral hospitals in three state capital cities in Australia. Participants: 88 patients with cancer attending three cancer centres in Australia, who were considering enrolment in phase 3 treatment trials, were invited to enrol in an unblinded randomised trial of provision of a clinical trial question prompt list (QPL) before consenting to enrol in the treatment trial. Interventions: We developed and pilot tested a targeted QPL for patients with cancer considering clinical trial participation (the clinical trial QPL). Consenting patients were randomised to receive the clinical trial QPL or not before further discussion with their oncologist and/or trial nurse about the treatment trial. Primary and secondary outcomes: Questionnaires were completed at baseline and within 3Ć¢ ā‚¬..weeks of deciding on treatment trial participation. Main outcome measure: scores on the Quality of Informed Consent questionnaire (QuIC). Results: 88 patients of 130 sought for the study were enrolled (43 males), and 45 received the clinical trial QPL. 49% of trials were chemotherapy interventions for patients with advanced disease, 35% and 16% were surgical adjuvant and radiation adjuvant trials respectively. 70 patients completed all relevant questionnaires. 28 of 43 patients in the control arm compared with 39 of 45 patients receiving the clinical trial QPL completed the QuIC (p=0.0124). There were no significant differences in the QuIC scores between the randomised groups (QuIC part A p=0.08 and QuIC part B p=0.92). There were no differences in patient satisfaction with decisions or in anxiety levels between the randomised groups. Conclusions: Use of a question prompt list did not significantly change the QuIC scores in this randomised trial. ANZCTR 12606000214538 prospectively registered 31/5/2006.     A Comparative Study on the Solution Techniques for Fiber Orientation in Two-Dimensional Converging and Diverging Flows

    The two-dimensional steady flow of both infinite and finite aspect ratio (length to diameter ratio) fibers suspended in a Newtonian fluid is investigated numeri cally. Forty-five-degree convergent and divergent channel geometries are considered for the analysis. Due to symmetry, only half the channel geometry is considered and the ori entation field is assumed to be planar. The analysis is carried out for the creeping flows where the inertia terms are neglected. Numerical grid generation is used to generate the mesh, and the transformed governing equations in terms of the stream function are solved in the computational domain using a finite difference scheme. In this study, several solu tion strategies for solving the orientation field are investigated. The orientation of individ ual fibers are assumed to be governed by Jeffery's equation. The orientation field, which can be expressed in different forms (i.e., a unit vector, tensorial quantities, or an orienta tion distribution function), is specified by solving the orientation equations along particle paths. A tracing technique is implemented to obtain these particle paths for each grid point in the flow domain. The solution of the orientation field is obtained by using two basic techniques. First, a large number of fibers are considered, and by using analytical expres sions developed to describe the orientation state of one fiber, a statistical orientation distri bution function is generated. Second, tensorial quantities (both second- and fourth-order orientation tensors) are employed to solve for the orientation field. In order to overcome the closure problem occurring in the resulting orientation equations, quadratic approxima tions are used. Maximum orientation angles are reported from both the techniques, and their accuracies are investigated. The maximum orientation angles (i.e., preferred orienta tion) obtained from the second- and fourth-order tensorial solutions are observed to be identical. On the other hand, the degree of fiber alignments that are specified by the indi vidual tensor components differ considerably. Comparison of the solution techniques shows that the accuracy of the preferred angle obtained from statistical solution is depen dent on the number of fibers considered. In addition, the calculations for the finite fiber aspect ratio revealed some discrepancies between the statistical and tensorial results at the regions of rapid fiber tumbling.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

    Molecular scale contact line hydrodynamics of immiscible flows

    From extensive molecular dynamics simulations on immiscible two-phase flows, we find the relative slipping between the fluids and the solid wall everywhere to follow the generalized Navier boundary condition, in which the amount of slipping is proportional to the sum of tangential viscous stress and the uncompensated Young stress. The latter arises from the deviation of the fluid-fluid interface from its static configuration. We give a continuum formulation of the immiscible flow hydrodynamics, comprising the generalized Navier boundary condition, the Navier-Stokes equation, and the Cahn-Hilliard interfacial free energy. Our hydrodynamic model yields interfacial and velocity profiles matching those from the molecular dynamics simulations at the molecular-scale vicinity of the contact line.     The Symptoms of Varicose Veins: Difficult to Determine and Difficult to Study

    ObjectivesTo investigate the activities which may exacerbate symptoms in patients with varicose veins.MethodsQuestionnaires sent to patients before clinics and at least six months later.ResultsBoth questionnaires were returned by 149 of 203 patients (74%) but only 124 contained adequate data for comparison ā€“ 55 from patients who had surgical treatment and 69 who had no surgery. At initial presentation, worsening of discomfort attributed to varicose veins was common during (58%) or after (48%) standing and in hot weather (44%), but less when sitting with the feet down (31%), and after (31%) or when walking (19%). Surgery significantly reduced the total number of symptoms reported by patients at follow-up (p<0.02). However, none of the symptoms reported during specific activities was significantly lessened by surgery compared with no treatment ā€“ possibly because the attrition of patients during the study resulted in small numbers for analysis.ConclusionsSymptoms are a common indication for treating varicose veins and it is therefore important to be sure that they are due to the veins, rather than other causes. This report highlights traditional and logical questions which may help to identify symptoms caused by varicose veins but illustrates the difficulty of validating them
