Made in Almanya: The Birth of Turkish Rap

    Get PDF
Under embargo until: 2022-03-23Turkish rap was born in the late 1980s in the transnational meeting of two mobile groups of people: African American soldiers stationed in Germany during the waning days of the Cold War and the period immediately after its end, and second-generation Turks in Germany, the children of economic migrants. This chapter explores the early history of Turkish hip hop in Germany, showing how second-generation Turkish migrant youth used rap music as a vehicle for constructing a sense of identity in the context of systematic marginalization within German society. As in youth cultures of leisure throughout the world, music and dance played significant roles in the lives of migrant youth. Turkish rap in Germany can be seen as a subcategory within the broader genre of migrant rap that emerged in the late 1980s, including other significant groups such as Advanced Chemistry.acceptedVersio

Inhaled particle counts on bicycle commute routes of low and high proximity to motorised traffic

Frequent exposure to ultrafine particles (UFP) is associated with detrimental effects on cardiopulmonary function and health. UFP dose and therefore the associated health risk are a factor of exposure frequency, duration, and magnitude of (therefore also proximity to) a UFP emission source. Bicycle commuters using on-road routes during peak traffic times are sharing a microenvironment with high levels of motorised traffic, a major UFP emission source. Inhaled particle counts were measured along popular pre-identified bicycle commute route alterations of low (LOW) and high (HIGH) motorised traffic to the same inner-city destination at peak commute traffic times. During commute, real-time particle number concentration (PNC; mostly in the UFP range) and particle diameter (PD), heart and respiratory rate, geographical location, and meteorological variables were measured. To determine inhaled particle counts, ventilation rate was calculated from heart-rate-ventilation associations, produced from periodic exercise testing. Total mean PNC of LOW (compared to HIGH) was reduced (1.56 x e4 ± 0.38 x e4 versus 3.06 x e4 ± 0.53 x e4 ppcc; p = 0.012). Total estimated ventilation rate did not vary significantly between LOW and HIGH (43 ± 5 versus 46 ± 9 L•min; p = 0.136); however, due to total mean PNC, accumulated inhaled particle counts were 48% lower in LOW, compared to HIGH (7.6 x e8 ± 1.5 x e8 versus 14.6 x e8 ± 1.8 x e8; p = 0.003). For bicycle commuting at peak morning commute times, inhaled particle counts and therefore cardiopulmonary health risk may be substantially reduced by decreasing exposure to motorised traffic, which should be considered by both bicycle commuters and urban planners

    UNFOLDING FINITIST ARITHMETIC

The concept of the (full) unfolding \user1{{\cal U}}(S) of a schematic system SS is used to answer the following question: Which operations and predicates, and which principles concerning them, ought to be accepted if one has accepted SS? The program to determine \user1{{\cal U}}(S) for various systems SS of foundational significance was previously carried out for a system of nonfinitist arithmetic, NFANFA; it was shown that \user1{{\cal U}}(NFA) is proof-theoretically equivalent to predicative analysis. In the present paper we work out the unfolding notions for a basic schematic system of finitist arithmetic, FAFA, and for an extension of that by a form BRBR of the so-called Bar Rule. It is shown that \user1{{\cal U}}(FA) and \user1{{\cal U}}(FA + BR) are proof-theoretically equivalent, respectively, to Primitive Recursive Arithmetic, PRAPRA, and to Peano Arithmetic, $PA

Emerging Technology IS Course Design: Blockchain for Business Example

    Get PDF
IS curricula require constant updating to accommodate the emergence of new technologies. Designing and delivering effective emerging technology courses within the constraints of existing programs remains an important challenge faculty face. This paper presents a template for approaching these courses from a learning theory perspective. Results of tests of this template, developed for teaching blockchain, indicate that it successfully strikes the balance needed in an IS program while simplifying the work of designing the structure of an emerging technology course. Additionally, this design was able to deliver this success in an online format, which can be a more challenging format for observing application of knowledge. Blockchain is a disruptive emerging technology opportunity for businesses to unlock value through trusted and “smart” peer-to-peer transactions, wherein smart means businesspeople can custom design processes for verification and transfer of assets. The blockchain example provided here includes a flexible 7-scenario design targeted to enable a constructive, project-based learning approach focused on authentic learning experiences. The template as applied to blockchain may be used directly or adapted for easier development of other emerging technology courses

ISRO Polyol - The Versatile Binder for Composite Solid Propellants for Launch Vehicles and Missiles

    Get PDF
A family of propellants based on a low cost hydroxy terminated binder has been developed and proved in large size motors. It can meet the requirements of Apogee motors as well as large boosters. The system offers advantages comparable with HTPB propellants in terms of high ballistic performance, stringent mechanical properties, ease and reliability of cure even at ambient conditions and high storage stability. The near-Newtonian flow behaviour, simplicity and processing characteristics of this saturated binder propellant are particularly note-worthy
