Studying the Nature of Dark Energy with Galaxy Clusters
We report on the status of our effort to constrain the nature of dark energy
through the evolution of the cluster mass function. Chandra temperature
profiles for 31 clusters from a local cluster sample are shown. The X-ray
appearance of the proto supermassive binary black hole at the center of the
cluster Abell 400 is described. Preliminary weak lensing results obtained with
Megacam@MMT for a redshift z=0.5 cluster from a distant cluster sample are

The First Supernova Explosions: Energetics, Feedback, And Chemical Enrichment
We perform three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations in a realistic cosmological setting to investigate the expansion, feedback, and chemical enrichment properties of a 200M(circle dot) pair-instability supernova in the high-redshift universe. We find that the SN remnant propagates for a Hubble time at z similar or equal to 20 to a final mass-weighted mean shock radius of 2.5 kpc (proper), roughly half the size of the H II region, and in this process sweeps up a total gas mass of 2: 5; 10(5) M-circle dot. The morphology of the shock becomes highly anisotropic once it leaves the host halo and encounters filaments and neighboring minihalos, while the bulk of the shock propagates into the voids of the intergalactic medium. The SN entirely disrupts the host halo and terminates further star formation for at least 200 Myr, while in our specific case it exerts positive mechanical feedback on neighboring minihalos by shock-compressing their cores. In contrast, we do not observe secondary star formation in the dense shell via gravitational fragmentation, due to the previous photoheating by the progenitor star. We find that cooling by metal lines is unimportant for the entire evolution of the SN remnant, while the metal-enriched, interior bubble expands adiabatically into the cavities created by the shock, and ultimately into the voids with a maximum extent similar to the final mass-weighted mean shock radius. Finally, we conclude that dark matter halos of at least M-vir greater than or similar to 10(8) M-circle dot must be assembled to recollect all components of the swept-up gas.Astronom
Observation of particle pairing in a two-dimensional plasma crystal
The observation is presented of naturally occurring pairing of particles and
their cooperative drift in a two-dimensional plasma crystal. A single layer of
plastic microspheres was suspended in the plasma sheath of a capacitively
coupled rf discharge in argon at a low pressure of 1 Pa. The particle dynamics
were studied by combining the top-view and side-view imaging of the suspension.
Cross analysis of the particle trajectories allowed us to identify naturally
occurring metastable pairs of particles. The lifetime of pairs was long enough

Protocol for a mixed-methods exploratory investigation of care following intensive care discharge: the REFLECT study

It is unclear how many of these deaths are preventable. Ward-based management following discharge from ICU is an area that patients and healthcare staff are concerned about. The primary aim of REFLECT (Recovery Following Intensive Care Treatment) is to develop an intervention plan to reduce in-hospital mortality rates in patients who have been discharged from ICU. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: REFLECT is a multicentre mixed-methods exploratory study examining ward care delivery to adult patients discharged from ICU. The study will be made up of four substudies. Medical notes of patients who were discharged from ICU and subsequently died will be examined using a retrospective case records review (RCRR) technique. Patients and their relatives will be interviewed about their post-ICU care, including relatives of patients who died in hospital following ICU discharge. Staff involved in the care of patients post-ICU discharge will be interviewed about the care of this patient group. The medical records of patients who survived their post-ICU stay will also be reviewed using the RCRR technique. The analyses of the substudies will be both descriptive and use a modified grounded theory approach to identify emerging themes. The evidence generated in these four substudies will form the basis of the intervention development, which will take place through stakeholder and clinical expert meetings. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval has been obtained through the Wales Research and Ethics Committee 4 (17/WA/0107). We aim to disseminate the findings through international conferences, international peer-reviewed journals and social media. Synchronization of particle motion in compressed two-dimensional plasma crystals
The collective motion of dust particles during the mode-coupling induced
melting of a two-dimensional plasma crystal is explored in molecular dynamics
simulations. The crystal is compressed horizontally by an anisotropic
confinement. This compression leads to an asymmetric triggering of the
mode-coupling instability which is accompanied by alternating chains of
in-phase and anti-phase oscillating particles. A new order parameter is
proposed to quantify the synchronization with respect to different directions
of the crystal. Depending on the orientation of the confinement anisotropy,
mode-coupling instability and synchronized motion are observed in one or two
directions. Notably, the synchronization is found to be direction-dependent.
The good agreement with experiments suggests that the confinement anisotropy
can be used to explain the observed synchronization process.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Dimensional crossover of the exchange-correlation energy at the semilocal level
Commonly used semilocal density functional approximations for the
exchange-correlation energy fail badly when the true two dimensional limit is
approached. We show, using a quasi-two-dimensional uniform electron gas in the
infinite barrier model, that the semilocal level can correctly recover the
exchange-correlation energy of the two-dimensional uniform electron gas. We
derive new exact constraints at the semilocal level for the dimensional
crossover of the exchange-correlation energy and we propose a method to
incorporate them in any exchange-correlation density functional approximation.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
The Use of Online Panel Data in Management Research: A Review and Recommendations
Management scholars have long depended on convenience samples to conduct research involving human participants. However, the past decade has seen an emergence of a new convenience sample: online panels and online panel participants. The data these participants provideâonline panel data (OPD)âhas been embraced by many management scholars owing to the numerous benefits it provides over âtraditionalâ convenience samples. Despite those advantages, OPD has not been warmly received by all. Currently, there is a divide in the field over the appropriateness of OPD in management scholarship. Our review takes aim at the divide with the goal of providing a common understanding of OPD and its utility and providing recommendations regarding when and how to use OPD and how and where to publish it. To accomplish these goals, we inventoried and reviewed OPD use across 13 management journals spanning 2006 to 2017. Our search resulted in 804 OPD-based studies across 439 articles. Notably, our search also identified 26 online panel platforms (âbrokersâ) used to connect researchers with online panel participants. Importantly, we offer specific guidance to authors, reviewers, and editors, having implications for both micro and macro management scholars
