    Pulmonary arterial remodeling revealed by microfocal x-ray tomography

    Animal models and micro-CT imaging are useful for understanding the functional consequences of, and identifying the genes involved in, the remodeling of vascular structures that accompanies pulmonary vascular disease. Using a micro-CT scanner to image contrast-enhanced arteries in excised lungs from fawn hooded rats (a strain genetically susceptible to hypoxia induced pulmonary hypertension), we found that portions of the pulmonary arterial tree downstream from a given diameter were morphometrically indistinguishable. This \u27self-consistency\u27 property provided a means for summarizing the pulmonary arterial tree architecture and mechanical properties using a parameter vector obtained from measurements of the contiguous set of vessel segments comprising the longest (principal) pathway and its branches over a range of vascular pressures. This parameter vector was used to characterize the pulmonary vascular remodeling that occurred in rats exposed to a hypoxic (11.5% oxygen) environment and provided the input to a hemodynamic model relating structure to function. The major effect of the remodeling was a longitudinally (pulmonary artery to arterioles) uniform decrease in vessel distensibility that resulted in a 90% increase in arterial resistance. Despite the almost uniform change in vessel distensibility, over 50% of the resistance increase was attributable to vessels with unstressed diameters less than 125 microns

The corrections derived and applied to the Seasat radar altimeter data over ice are described in detail, including the editing and retracking algorithm to correct for height errors caused by lags in the automatic range tracking circuit.     A gridded surface-elevation data set and a geo-referenced data base for the Seasat radar altimeter data over Greenland are described. This is a user guide to accompany the data provided to data centers and other users. The grid points are on a polar stereographic projection with a nominal spacing of 20 km. The gridded elevations are derived from the elevation data in the geo-referenced data base by a weighted fitting of a surface in the neighborhood of each grid point. The gridded elevations are useful for the creating of large-scale contour maps, and the geo-referenced data base is useful for regridding, creating smaller-scale contour maps, and examinating individual elevation measurements in specific geographic areas. Tape formats are described, and a FORTRAN program for reading the data tape is listed and provided on the tape

    ADVANCING LIBRARY AND INFORMATION LITERACY (LIL) IN THE NIGERIAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

    Information literacy is a pertinent aspect of any developing or developed society, hence the need to make it an integral part of the education system of any aspiring great society. This article x-rays the library and information literacy in the Nigerian educational system and how it can be advanced. Common approach to libraries in Nigerian educational system, which cuts across the primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, is seen as the reason for the laxity in library and information real time advancement. The article also looked at the discrepancies between the theory and practice in library literacy in accessing necessary information and the difficulties experienced in the process in the Nigerian educational system. The position of the National Education Policy (NPE), according to this article, should go beyond its theoretical placements and make the needed changes so as to practically accommodate the Library and Information Centres. This paper is based on the longitudinal (observatory) studies of the author aided with secondary data to buttress the positions made. It posits that the seeming laxity (common approach) of students’ literacy on library and information centres is primarily because of the lacuna at their early levels of education. Such gaps presented pertinent suggestions for improving library and information literacy. This prompted a useful yard stick for the paper to present workable recommendations that in its opinion will be of immense help to solving it

    The value of outdoor behavioral healthcare for adolescent substance users with comorbid conditions

    The damage inflicted on our society by mental health and substance use issues is reaching epidemic proportions with few signs of abating. One new and innovative strategy for addressing these comorbid issues has been the development of outdoor behavioral healthcare (OBH). This study compared the effectiveness of three post-acute adolescent substance use situations: OBH, treatment as usual (TAU), and no structured treatment (NST). The simulated target population was 13-17 years old with comorbid substance use and mental health issues. When costs were adjusted for actual completion rates of 94% in OBH, 37% in TAU, and 0forNST,theactualtreatmentcostsperpersonwere0 for NST, the actual treatment costs per person were 27 426 for OBH and 31113forTAU.OBHalsohadacostbenefitratioof60.431 113 for TAU. OBH also had a cost–benefit ratio of 60.4% higher than TAU, an increased Quality in Life Years (QALY) life span, societal benefits of an additional 36 100, and 424% better treatment outcomes as measured by the Youth Outcome Questionnaire (YOQ) research instrument

The ZnII atom lies on a twofold rotation axis and the ligands are arranged tetra­hedrally around this atom. The benzene­thiol­ate ligand and the biquinoline ligand are nearly perpendicular to one another, making a dihedral angle of 84.09 (5)°. The biquinoline ligand is nearly planar, with a maximum deviation of 0.055 (3) Å from the mean plane of the ring system. In the crystal, the mol­ecules pack in a manner such that the biquinoline ligands are parallel to one another, with a π–π inter­action [interplanar distance = 3.38 (1) Å] with the neighboring biquinoline ligand

    Uncertainties in the land-use flux resulting from land-use change reconstructions and gross land transitions

    Land-use and land-cover (LUC) changes are a key uncertainty when attributing changes in measured atmospheric CO2 concentration to its sinks and sources and must also be much better understood to determine the possibilities for land-based climate change mitigation, especially in the light of human demand on other land-based resources. On the spatial scale typically used in terrestrial ecosystem models (0.5 or 1°) changes in LUC over time periods of a few years or more can include bidirectional changes on the sub-grid level, such as the parallel expansion and abandonment of agricultural land (e.g. in shifting cultivation) or cropland–grassland conversion (and vice versa). These complex changes between classes within a grid cell have often been neglected in previous studies, and only net changes of land between natural vegetation cover, cropland and pastures accounted for, mainly because of a lack of reliable high-resolution historical information on gross land transitions, in combination with technical limitations within the models themselves. In the present study we applied a state-of-the-art dynamic global vegetation model with a detailed representation of croplands and carbon–nitrogen dynamics to quantify the uncertainty in terrestrial ecosystem carbon stocks and fluxes arising from the choice between net and gross representations of LUC. We used three frequently applied global, one recent global and one recent European LUC datasets, two of which resolve gross land transitions, either in Europe or in certain tropical regions. When considering only net changes, land-use-transition uncertainties (expressed as 1 standard deviation around decadal means of four models) in global carbon emissions from LUC (ELUC) are ±0.19, ±0.66 and ±0.47 Pg C a−1 in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, respectively, or between 14 and 39 % of mean ELUC. Carbon stocks at the end of the 20th century vary by ±11 Pg C for vegetation and ±37 Pg C for soil C due to the choice of LUC reconstruction, i.e. around 3 % of the respective C pools. Accounting for sub-grid (gross) land conversions significantly increased the effect of LUC on global and European carbon stocks and fluxes, most noticeably enhancing global cumulative ELUC by 33 Pg C (1750–2014) and entailing a significant reduction in carbon stored in vegetation, although the effect on soil C stocks was limited. Simulations demonstrated that assessments of historical carbon stocks and fluxes are highly uncertain due to the choice of LUC reconstruction and that the consideration of different contrasting LUC reconstructions is needed to account for this uncertainty. The analysis of gross, in addition to net, land-use changes showed that the full complexity of gross land-use changes is required in order to accurately predict the magnitude of LUC change emissions. This introduces technical challenges to process-based models and relies on extensive information regarding historical land-use transitions

    MESSENGER observations of the dayside low‐latitude boundary layer in Mercury’s magnetosphere

    Observations from MErcury Surface Space ENvironment GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER)’s Magnetometer and Fast Imaging Plasma Spectrometer instruments during the first orbital year have resulted in the identification of 25 magnetopause crossings in Mercury’s magnetosphere with significant low‐latitude boundary layers (LLBLs). Of these crossings 72% are observed dawnside and 65% for northward interplanetary magnetic field. The estimated LLBL thickness is 450 ± 56 km and increases with distance to noon. The Na+ group ion is sporadically present in 14 of the boundary layers, with an observed average number density of 22 ± 11% of the proton density. Furthermore, the average Na+ group gyroradii in the layers is 220 ± 34 km, the same order of magnitude as the LLBL thickness. Magnetic shear, plasma β and reconnection rates have been estimated for the LLBL crossings and compared to those of a control group (non‐LLBL) of 61 distinct magnetopause crossings which show signs of nearly no plasma inside the magnetopause. The results indicate that reconnection is significantly slower, or even suppressed, for the LLBL crossings compared to the non‐LLBL cases. Possible processes that form or impact the LLBL are discussed. Protons injected through the cusp or flank may be important for the formation of the LLBL. Furthermore, the opposite asymmetry in the Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability (KHI) as compared to the LLBL rules out the KHI as a dominant formation mechanism.
