SEGMENT3D: A Web-based Application for Collaborative Segmentation of 3D images used in the Shoot Apical Meristem

The quantitative analysis of 3D confocal microscopy images of the shoot apical meristem helps understanding the growth process of some plants. Cell segmentation in these images is crucial for computational plant analysis and many automated methods have been proposed. However, variations in signal intensity across the image mitigate the effectiveness of those approaches with no easy way for user correction. We propose a web-based collaborative 3D image segmentation application, SEGMENT3D, to leverage automatic segmentation results. The image is divided into 3D tiles that can be either segmented interactively from scratch or corrected from a pre-existing segmentation. Individual segmentation results per tile are then automatically merged via consensus analysis and then stitched to complete the segmentation for the entire image stack. SEGMENT3D is a comprehensive application that can be applied to other 3D imaging modalities and general objects. It also provides an easy way to create supervised data to advance segmentation using machine learning models

Condições do trabalho docente na Educação Especial: primórdios e atualidade

This writing aims to reflect the conditions of teaching work in Special Education, starting from the emergence of this segment of teachers in Brazil until the present day. The methodology consisted of a bibliographic research, in a qualitative approach, based on studies by Gondra and Schueller (2008), Mazzotta (2011), Januzzi (2012), among other authors dealing with the theme. As a result, we found that the beginning of the teaching profession in Special Education was marked by structural, material and financial difficulties, however, with the emergence of the inclusive perspective and the Specialized Educational Service, advances in the working conditions of these teachers are noted, although still signal failures and difficulties of different orders to this day.Este escrito tem por objetivo refletir as condições do trabalho docente na Educação Especial, partindo do surgimento desse segmento de professores no Brasil até os dias atuais. A metodologia consistiu numa pesquisa do tipo bibliográfica, na abordagem qualitativa, baseando-se nos estudos de Gondra e Schueller (2008), Mazzotta (2011), Januzzi (2012), dentre outros autores que tratam da temática. Como resultados, constatamos que o início da profissão docente na Educação Especial foi marcado por dificuldades estruturais, materiais e financeiras, porém, com o surgimento da perspectiva inclusiva e do Atendimento Educacional Especializado, notam-se avanços nas condições de trabalho desses professores, muito embora ainda sinalizem falhas e dificuldades de diferentes ordens até os dias de hoje

Cell Segmentation in 3D Confocal Images using Supervoxel Merge-Forests with CNN-based Hypothesis Selection

Automated segmentation approaches are crucial to quantitatively analyze large-scale 3D microscopy images. Particularly in deep tissue regions, automatic methods still fail to provide error-free segmentations. To improve the segmentation quality throughout imaged samples, we present a new supervoxel-based 3D segmentation approach that outperforms current methods and reduces the manual correction effort. The algorithm consists of gentle preprocessing and a conservative super-voxel generation method followed by supervoxel agglomeration based on local signal properties and a postprocessing step to fix under-segmentation errors using a Convolutional Neural Network. We validate the functionality of the algorithm on manually labeled 3D confocal images of the plant Arabidopis thaliana and compare the results to a state-of-the-art meristem segmentation algorithm.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

The fire management dilemma in the Brazilian Amazon

The agricultural fires observed in the Brazilian Amazon have an inherent duality of being both efficient tools for land preparation and sources of air pollution, global warming and accidental fires. Despite multiple policies, fire management practices are scantily adopted by communities of fire-dependent smallholders. Which is mainly due to a social dilemma where benefits are diffuse, and costs are individually bore. In order to identify causal factors that enable and disable solutions to such a dilemma, the paper analyses case studies of community-based fire management through the lens of institutional economics. The mechanisms through which individual similarity, government and non-government intervention, community turnover and market access influence fire management are detailed. It is concluded that public policy should be redesigned towards community-based and participative approaches, seeking synergy with NGOs and supporting communities on monitoring and sanctioning. Integration of agrarian settlements to the land markets must be reconsidered, especially where land tenure is ill-defined

A ESTRUTURAÇÃO DA FILOSOFIA DE POLÍCIA COMUNITÁRIA E DIREITOS HUMANOS NA PMTO

Este trabalho concentrou-se em propor a estruturação da filosofia de polícia comunitária e direitos humanos na PMTO. Para tanto, pretendeu-se contextualizar a função constitucional da polícia militar face às novas demandas de cidadania do atual Estado Democrático de Direito. Buscou-se identificar as práticas de polícia comunitária e direitos humanos realizadas nas unidades policiais militares, bem como seus respectivos acompanhamentos, por meio da aplicação de questionário estruturado respondido pelos 15 comandos das unidades. Foram realizadas pesquisas doutrinárias, em legislações estaduais e normas de outras unidades da federação que demonstraram a necessidade da presente estruturação. O estudo também objetivou demonstrar a proximidade e afinidade entre as matérias, justificando a criação de um único órgão para desenvolver e divulgar as políticas de polícia comunitária e de direitos humanos. A criação de uma diretriz estadual também revelou-se necessária para nortear a aplicação das ações temáticas e o consequente fortalecimento desta área de atuação na PMTO.   PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Polícia Comunitária; Cidadania; Direitos Humanos; Estruturação; Diretriz.   ABSTRACT This work has focused on proposing the structuring of the community police and human rights philosophy in the MPST. For that, it was intended to contextualize the constitutional function of the military police in face of the new demands of citizenship of the current Democratic State of Right. The aim was to identify the community police and human rights practices carried out in the military police units, as well as their respective follow-ups, through the application of a structured questionnaire answered by the 15 commandos of the units. Doctrinal research was carried out in state legislations and other federation units that demonstrated the necessity of the present structuring. The study also aimed to demonstrate the proximity and affinity between the subjects, justifying the creation of a single body to develop and disseminate community policing and human rights policies. The creation of a state directive was also necessary to guide the application of thematic actions and the consequent strengthening of this area of ​​activity in the MPST.   KEYWORDS: Community Policing; Citizenship; Human rights; Structuring; Guideline.      RESUMEN Este trabajo se centró en proponer la estructuración de la filosofía de policía comunitaria y los derechos humanos en la PMTO. Se realizaron investigaciones doctrinales, en legislaciones estatales y normas de otras unidades de la federación que demostraron la necesidad de la presente estructuración. El estudio también tuvo como objetivo demostrar la proximidad y afinidad entre las materias, justificando la creación de un único órgano para desarrollar y divulgar las políticas de policía comunitaria y de derechos humanos. O jogo enquanto vida moralmente correta: hedonismo utilitário, a ética do jogo?

We play because it’s fun and it gives us pleasure, but what, exactly, does that mean? This article explores the connection between the act of gaming and a philosophy of pleasure, that of utilitarian hedonism. Hedonism in this context is not just a system of thought concerning itself with enjoyment and pleasure, but a way to look at gaming as a moral act. The article poses two main questions: Is it possible to study pleasure, and can gaming be enjoyed not just for its mechanisms and social value, but also for its value as a model for and a part of a morally good life? To facilitate this discussion, this article draws heavily on the philosophy of utilitarian hedonism, positioning hedonism not as a system of reckless indulgence, but as a philosophy of communal effort towards a general increase in the level of enjoyment for all involved. By drawing on experience with as well as research on gamer behavior and knowledge of game systems, this article demonstrates how gaming can be seen as a lesson in the importance of increasing pleasure for all. By looking at the use of and meaning of the concept of pleasure, current game research is drawn into question. The many attempts of research to isolate simple formulas for “the good game” appear flawed and simplistic from this point of view. The philosophy of hedonism argues that “good”, “pleasurable” and “fun” are very subjective concepts, and that while a large group of people may agree that a game is “good”, this agreement may not come from a common agreement about what exactly makes the game good. It is in the nature of pleasure to be individual, subjective and situational, which defies attempts at creating a formula for enjoyment both for researchers and designers.Key words: Game, pleasure, hedonism.Jogamos porque é divertido e porque nos dá prazer, mas exatamente o que isso significa? Esse artigo explora a conexão entre o ato de jogar e a filosofia do prazer, do hedonismo utilitário. Hedonismo, nesse contexto, não é compreendido apenas como um sistema de pensamento sobre si mesmo com prazer e desfrute, mas uma maneira de observar o jogar como um ato moral. É possível estudar o prazer, e o jogo pode ser desfrutado não apenas por seus mecanismos e valores sociais, mas também por seus valores enquanto um modelo para e como parte de uma boa vida moral? Para facilitar essa discussão, o presente artigo está embasado na filosofia do hedonismo utilitário, posicionando o hedonismo não como um sistema de indulgência imprudente, mas como uma filosofia de esforço comum em direção a um aumento geral no nível de fruição por todos os envolvidos. Baseado na experiência como jogador, tanto quanto na pesquisa sobre comportamento dos jogadores e no conhecimento sobre o sistema dos jogos, esse artigo demonstra como jogar pode ser visto como uma lição importante para o aumento de prazer para todos. A presente pesquisa aborda os games através da observação do uso e do significado do conceito de prazer. As muitas tentativas de pesquisa para isolar formulas simples para o “bom jogo” parecem falhas e simplistas a partir desse ponto de vista. A filosofia do hedonismo argumenta que “bom”, “prazeroso” e “divertido” são conceitos muito subjetivos, e que apesar de um grande grupo de pessoas poder concordar que um jogo é “bom”, essa concordância nem sempre se dá no que diz respeito sobre o quê exatamente faz o jogo bom. A natureza individual, subjetiva e situacional do prazer desafia as tentativas de criar uma formula, tanto para pesquisadores como para designers para desfrutar o jogo.Palavras-chave: Jogo, prazer, hedonismo

As redes sociais na WEB são ferramentas muito utilizadas pelos usuários que desejam trocar informações na internet. Essas redes se formam por meio de blogs, comunidades, correntes de e-mail e sites de compartilhamento de arquivos e reúnem pessoas com objetivos e interesses em comum. Além da participação direta do usuário, dando opiniões e idéias, esse tipo de sistema proporciona uma velocidade de acesso a conteúdos de livros, filmes, discos, imagens e arquivos em geral. Essas redes desenvolvem linguagens próprias e maneiras de se comunicarem específicas que unem os códigos daquele determinado grupo fora da internet (em seu território habitual) aos recursos e adaptações dessa linguagem via computador. As redes propõem e tratam de diversos assuntos, tendo a característica de serem cada vez mais específicas e segmentadas, enquanto resultado do fenômeno do estabelecimento da identidade na pósmodernidade
