    Uses of Phonics-Based and Whole Language/Balanced Literacy Tools in Teaching Reading: How Does the Evidence Support Student Success in the Classroom?

    Reading proficiency is a key predictor of life success and yet there is much disagreement in terms of the most effective way to teach children to read. Research around best practices for specific reading skills has been filled with contention for more than 200 years. The term, the Reading Wars, refers to the debate over whether phonics-based instruction or whole language/balanced literacy instruction is the most effective tool for creating proficient readers. This review sets out to clear up misperceptions around these interventions, to outline evidence for and against specific tools from both sides of the debate, and to detail the application of research to classroom, while noting gaps in research and in teacher understanding. Further research, particularly longitudinal studies, into specific instructional interventions to support reading success is indicated. Educating teachers about evidence-based instructional practices can help inform educators’ programming decisions, resulting in increased buy-in and fidelity

    Local Resection of Primary Tumor in Upfront Stage IV Breast Cancer

    Background: This study aimed to identify the association of local surgery of the primary tumor in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients with overall survival (OS) and prognostic factors. Patients and Methods: Patients with primary MBC (1990-2006) were included in our retrospective analysis (n = 236). 83.1% had surgery for the primary tumor. OS was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier estimates. Predictive factors for OS were determined. Results: Median follow-up was 123 months for all patients still alive at the time of analysis. In univariate analysis, patients with surgery of the primary tumor had significantly prolonged OS (28.9 vs. 23.9 months). Within the surgery group, patients with MBC limited to 1 organ system had a better outcome (39.3 vs. 24.9 months), as did asymptomatic patients. Independent risk factors for shorter OS were hormone receptor negativity, symptoms, and involvement of > 1 organ system. Conclusion: Patient selection for local therapy was confounded by a more favorable profile and a lesser tumor burden before surgery, which might implicate a bias. Nevertheless, our univariate results indicate that local surgery of the primary tumor in MBC patients could be considered as part of the therapeutic regimen in selected patients.     Quantified effect of seawater biogeochemistry on the temperature dependence of sea spray aerosol fluxes

    Future change in sea surface temperature may influence climate via various air-sea feedbacks and pathways. In this study, we investigate the influence of surface seawater biogeochemical composition on the temperature dependence of sea spray number emission fluxes. Dependence of sea spray fluxes was investigated in different water masses (i.e. subantarctic, subtropical and frontal bloom) with contrasting biogeochemical properties across a temperature range from ambient (13&ndash;18 &deg;C) to 2 &deg;C, using seawater circulating in a plunging jet sea spray generator. We observed sea spray total concentration to increase significantly at temperatures below 8 &deg;C, with an average 4-fold increase at 2 &deg;C relative to initial concentration at ambient temperatures. This temperature dependence was more pronounced for smaller size sea spray particles (i.e. nucleation and Aitken modes). Moreover, temperature dependence varied with water mass type and so biogeochemical properties. While the sea spray flux at moderate temperatures (8&ndash;11 &deg;C) was highest in frontal bloom waters, the effect of low temperature on the sea spray flux was highest with subtropical seawaters. The temperature dependence of sea spray flux was also inversely proportional to the seawater cell abundance of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus, which facilitated parameterization of temperature dependence of sea spray emission fluxes as a function of Synechococcus for future implementation in modelling exercises.</p

    Standardization of Epidemiological Surveillance of Group A Streptococcal Impetigo

    Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial infection of the superficial layer of skin. Impetigo is caused by group A Streptococcus (Strep A) and Staphylococcus aureus, alone or in combination, with the former predominating in many tropical climates. Strep A impetigo occurs mainly in early childhood, and the burden varies worldwide. It is an acute, self-limited disease, but many children experience frequent recurrences that make it a chronic illness in some endemic settings. We present a standardized surveillance protocol including case definitions for impetigo including both active (purulent, crusted) and resolving (flat, dry) phases and discuss the current tests used to detect Strep A among persons with impetigo. Case classifications that can be applied are detailed, including differentiating between incident (new) and prevalent (existing) cases of Strep A impetigo. The type of surveillance methodology depends on the burden of impetigo in the community. Active surveillance and laboratory confirmation is the preferred method for case detection, particularly in endemic settings. Participant eligibility, surveillance population and additional considerations for surveillance of impetigo, including examination of lesions, use of photographs to document lesions, and staff training requirements (including cultural awareness), are addressed. Finally, the core elements of case report forms for impetigo are presented and guidance for recording the course and severity of impetigo provided

    Autoantibodies against a 43 KDa Muscle Protein in Inclusion Body Myositis

    BACKGROUND: Inclusion body myositis (IBM) is a poorly understood and refractory autoimmune muscle disease. Though widely believed to have no significant humoral autoimmunity, we sought to identify novel autoantibodies with high specificity for this disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Plasma autoantibodies from 65 people, including 25 with IBM, were analyzed by immunoblots against normal human muscle. Thirteen of 25 (52%) IBM patient samples recognized an approximately 43 kDa muscle protein. No other disease (N = 25) or healthy volunteer (N = 15) samples recognized this protein. CONCLUSIONS: Circulating antibodies against a 43-kDa muscle autoantigen may lead to the discovery of a novel biomarker for IBM. Its high specificity for IBM among patients with autoimmune myopathies furthermore suggests a relationship to disease pathogenesis

    Evidence of nitrate-based nighttime atmospheric nucleation driven by marine microorganisms in the South Pacific

    9 pags. 3 figs.Our understanding of ocean-cloud interactions and their effect on climate lacks insight into a key pathway: do biogenic marine emissions form new particles in the open ocean atmosphere? Using measurements collected in ship-borne air-sea interface tanks deployed in the Southwestern Pacific Ocean, we identified new particle formation (NPF) during nighttime that was related to plankton community composition. We show that nitrate ions are the only species for which abundance could support NPF rates in our semicontrolled experiments. Nitrate ions also prevailed in the natural pristine marine atmosphere and were elevated under higher sub-10 nm particle concentrations. We hypothesize that these nucleation events were fueled by complex, short-term biogeochemical cycling involving the microbial loop.     Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context

    Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts
