Putting the Team in STEAM: The Art of Robot Making
What began as a life partnership has evolved into an early learning STEAM team. Artist, David Thompson, uses science, technology, engineering and math, on a daily basis, to create robots and much more. Teresa Day Walker is an assistant professor of early childhood education. Through necessity they discovered their combined talents could be used to promote STEAM in early childhood. David and Teri teamed up to provide a nearly impromptu robot making demonstration for 100 kindergarten students. After reading their co-authored book, Robot Hide and Seek, both, clay based and 3-D modeled images were used to generate interest and discussion. Ultimately, Boom, a resin robot, took center stage during the engaging hands-on casting demonstration as he evolved from two separate chemicals, into his combined liquid state, and finally his solid self
A multi-method investigation of the association between emotional clarity and empathy.
Higher emotional clarity, the extent to which people unambiguously identify, label, and describe their own emotions, is related to a host of positive intrapersonal factors but its relation to interpersonal factors is unexplored. We hypothesized that emotional clarity would be related to cognitive empathy (i.e., perceiving others' emotions) and to accurately understanding others' negative affect (NA), but not positive affect (PA), in the context of a stressful situation. After completing self-reports of trait emotional clarity and cognitive and affective empathy (i.e., one's emotional reaction to others), participants (N = 94 undergraduate students; i.e., perceivers) viewed a series of video clips of adults (i.e., targets) completing a stressful laboratory task in a previous research study. Before and after the stress task, targets reported their state NA and PA. While viewing the recordings, perceivers rated how they thought the targets were feeling at the corresponding time points. Correspondence between perceivers' and targets' affect ratings were used as indices of the outcome variable, performance-based cognitive empathy. As expected, self-reported emotional clarity was related to the self-reported cognitive, but not affective, empathy. Moreover, perceivers' emotional clarity was related to higher cognitive empathy for NA not PA after the stressful task. Our findings provide preliminary support for the importance of emotional clarity in the ability to accurately understand others' affective experiences, which has important interpersonal implications. Effect of Cultivar on Chlorophyll Meter and Canopy Reflectance Measurements in Cucumber
Optical sensors can be used to assess crop N status to assist with N fertilizer management. Differences between cultivars may affect optical sensor measurement. Cultivar effects on measurements made with the SPAD-502 (Soil Plant Analysis Development) meter and the MC-100 (Chlorophyll Concentration Meter), and of several vegetation indices measured with the Crop Circle ACS470 canopy reflectance sensor, were assessed. A cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) crop was grown in a greenhouse, with three cultivars. Each cultivar received three N treatments, of increasing N concentration, being deficient (N1), sufficient (N2) and excessive (N3). There were significant differences between cultivars in the measurements made with both chlorophyll meters, particularly when N supply was sufficient and excessive (N2 and N3 treatments, respectively). There were no consistent differences between cultivars in vegetation indices. Optical sensor measurements were strongly linearly related to leaf N content in each of the three cultivars. The lack of a consistent effect of cultivar on the relationship with leaf N content suggests that a unique equation to estimate leaf N content from vegetation indices can be applied to all three cultivars. The Use of Chlorophyll Meters to Assess Crop N Status and Derivation of Sufficiency Values for Sweet Pepper
Chlorophyll meters are promising tools for improving the nitrogen (N) management of vegetable crops. To facilitate on-farm use of these meters, sufficiency values that identify deficient and sufficient crop N status are required. This work evaluated the ability of three chlorophyll meters (SPAD-502, atLEAF+, and MC-100) to assess crop N status in sweet pepper. It also determined sufficiency values for optimal N nutrition for each meter for pepper. The experimental work was conducted in a greenhouse, in Almería, Spain, very similar to those used for commercial production, in three different crops grown with fertigation. In each crop, there were five treatments of different N concentration in the nutrient solution, applied in each irrigation, ranging from a very deficient to very excessive N supply. In general, chlorophyll meter measurements were strongly related to crop N status in all phenological stages of the three crops, indicating that these measurements are good indicators of the crop N status of pepper. Sufficiency values determined for each meter for the four major phenological stages were consistent between the three crops. CTQ 839: Candidate for the Smallest Projected Separation Binary Quasar
We report the discovery of the new double quasar CTQ 839. This B = 18.3,
radio quiet quasar pair is separated by 2.1" in BRIH filters with magnitude
differences of delta m_B = 2.5, delta m_R = delta m_I = 1.9, and delta m_H =
2.3. Spectral observations reveal both components to be z = 2.24 quasars, with
relative redshifts that agree at the 100 km/s level, but exhibit pronounced
differences in the equivalent widths of related emission features, as well as
an enhancement of blue continuum flux in the brighter component longward of the
Ly alpha emission feature. In general, similar redshift double quasars can be
the result of a physical binary pair, or a single quasar multiply imaged by
gravitational lensing. Empirical PSF subtraction of R and H band images of CTQ
839 reveal no indication of a lensing galaxy, and place a detection limit of R
= 22.5 and H = 17.4 for a third component in the system. For an Einstein-de
Sitter cosmology and SIS model, the R band detection limit constrains the
characteristics of any lensing galaxy to z_lens >= 1 with a corresponding
luminosity of L >~ 5 L_*, while an analysis based on the redshift probability
distribution for the lensing galaxy argues against the existence of a z_lens >~
1 lens at the 2 sigma level. A similar analysis for a Lambda dominated
cosmology, however, does not significantly constrain the existence of any
lensing galaxy. The broadband flux differences, spectral dissimilarities, and
failure to detect a lensing galaxy make the lensing hypothesis for CTQ 839
unlikely. The similar redshifts of the two components would then argue for a
physical quasar binary. At a projected separation of 8.3/h kpc (Omega_matter =
1), CTQ 839 would be the smallest projected separation binary quasar currently

CGM2, a Member of the Carcinoembryonic Antigen Gene Family is Down- Regulated in Colorectal Carcinomas
We have determined the precise chromosomal location, the exon structure, and the expression pattern of CGM2, a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family. CGM2 cDNA was amplified by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT/PCR) from the colon adenocarcinoma cell line, LS174T. A defective exon is missing from this cDNA clone, leading to a novel domain organization for the human CEA family with two immunoglobulin-like domains. The derived C-terminal domain predicts that the CGM2 protein is membrane-bound through a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol anchor. RT/PCR analyses identified CGM2 transcripts in mucinous ovarian and colonic adenocarcinomas as well as in adjacent colonic tissue, but not in other tumors including leukocytes from six chronic myeloid leukemia patients. Thus, unlike several other family members, CGM2 is not expressed in granulocytes but reveals a more CEA-like expression pattern. Northern blot analyses identified a 2.5-kilobase CGM2 mRNA that is strongly down-regulated in colonic adenocarcinomas compared with adjacent colonic mucosa, suggesting a possible tumor suppressor function. In addition, a 3.2- kilobase transcript was observed in a number of colon tumors that is not detectable in normal colonic tissue. This mRNA species could represent a tumor-specific CGM2 splice variant
Circulating C-reactive protein and breast cancer risk – systematic literature review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies
We conducted a systematic literature review to explore the association between circulating C-reactive protein (CRP), a low-grade inflammation biomarker, and breast cancer risk. Relevant prospective studies in women were identified in PubMed and Web of Science until February 2015. Random-effects dose-response metaanalysis was conducted, overall and in post-menopausal women. Twelve out of 15 studies identified were included in the meta-analysis on any breast cancers (3,522 cases, 69,610 women) and nine on postmenopausal breast cancer (2,516 cases, 36,847 women). For each doubling of CRP concentration, a 7% (95% CI: 2%–12%) and 6% (95% CI: 1%–11%) increased risk was observed (I2=47% and 32%; P heterogeneity=0.04 and 0.17), respectively. The association was linear over most of the range of CRP concentrations. Positive associations remained in the studies that examined the exclusion of early years of follow-up. Associations were attenuated in studies adjusted for lifestyle factors, which partly explained the significant heterogeneity between studies in the overall analysis. On average, the associations in studies adjusted or not adjusted for body mass index were similar. Low-grade inflammation may have a role in breast cancer development. Additional prospective studies are needed to better understand confounding and effect modification from lifestyle factors
