Corporate governance effects on market volatility:empirical evidence from portuguese listed firms
Purpose
This study examines the relationship between internal corporate governance mechanisms and firm risk-taking.
Design/methodology/approach
This research comprises a sample of 38 non-financial Portuguese firms listed on Euronext Lisbon, over the period from 2007 to 2017. To test the formulated hypotheses we use panel-corrected standard errors (PCSE) models.
Findings
Our results provide evidence that, in the Portuguese context, bigger and younger firms, with larger boards of directors and a greater number of independent directors, present higher levels of systematic risk. Our results are consistent across the robustness checks.
Originality/value
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a robust incremental effect of board size on firm systematic risk is reported. This result contradicts the prevailing literature and opens up a new debate, from a financial markets viewpoint, on the benefits of larger boards of directors in terms of mitigating market volatility.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Board gender diversity and capital structure: Evidence from the Portuguese listed firms
This investigation analyzes the impact of board gender diversity on the financial policies of non-financial Portuguese listed firms between 2010-2019. The study applies the two-step Generalized Method of
Moments (GMM) for econometric analysis. The results show that board gender diversity affects firms’ capital structure. While female directors have no determinant role in defining firm indebtedness levels, they significantly contribute to its structure. Our results demonstrate that female directors, particularly those with executive roles, consistently contribute to reducing firms’ long-term debt and prefer to issue short-term debt. Moreover, female directors tend to manage trade over financial debt, especially in older firms.
Independent female directors play a significant role in smaller firms by decreasing long-term and financial debt. The study supports the notion that gender diversity on the board contributes differently to the firms’ financial policies. Additionally, the findings are in line with the assumptions of agency, resource dependence, and pecking order theories. This study shows that gender diversity promotes short-term debt as a substitute for bank loans to avoid increasing firms’ risk, which ultimately impacts the definition of financial debt levels.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
referidos, os jovens devem ser encorajados a por em prática: a responsabilidade e integridade;
a excelência e exigência; a curiosidade, reflexão e inovação; a cidadania e participação e a
liberdade. The public announcement of a document containing the desirable Portuguese students profile
when they leave compulsory schooling (Perfil dos Alunos à Saída da Escolaridade Obrigatória),
which has given rise to Order No. 6478/2017 of July 26, presents the guiding main lines to be
considered in order to structure Education for the 21st century regarding its principles, vision,
values and key skills. This document also follows UNESCO's global vision for Education and other
European organizations responsible in that area, which refer the importance of preparing
students for this century skills and specific know-how. The absolute need to change the
paradigm of Education is emphasized: classes guided by traditional models do not fit this new
vision and it is necessary to prepare students for key skills as creativity, communication, critical
thinking, innovation and the ability to solve problems through cooperation, besides knowledge.
This proposal necessarily implies "changes in pedagogical and didactic practices in order to
adapt the overall educational action to the purposes of the students' skills profile."
From these references, a research and reflection work was developed and it suggests, whenever
possible, the opportunity of an experiential learning in Philosophy which will be anchored in
three dimensions: the valuation of the students' personal experiences in order to consolidate
this secondary education subject curriculum, the practical application of Philosophy subject
curriculum items in real situations, and finally, the involvement of students in value projects
organized when learning, reflecting and discussing Philosophy. It is expected, teaching
Philosophy this way, to contribute to the students’ education in the principles, vision, values
and key skills outlined in that public document without forgetting to train fundamental
intellectual operations in Philosophy: conceptualization, questioning and argumentation, as
well as analysis, interpretation, commentary of a written text and dissertation.
The herein presented reflections are also intended to be considered as an appeal to the
necessity of innovating in Philosophy didactics regarding the values that, according to the
mentioned global vision of Education, young people should be encouraged to put into practice:
responsibility and integrity, excellence and demand, curiosity, reflection and innovation,
citizenship and freedom
No
The Plastic Injection Mold Industry in Portugal is a sector that has been growing and gaining
international projection in the last decades. It is an industry driven by external demand and recognized
worldwide for quality and competitiveness. With an increasingly dynamic market where “time is
money”, accomplish customer lead times is seen as a crucial point in the entire process. To achieve this
goal, it is necessary to optimize the production processes in order to obtain the highest possible
productivity, consequently reducing the delivery time and even enabling better prices for the product.
It is in this sense that this dissertation studies the process of penetration erosion in order to optimize one
of the most time consuming and costly processes of the machining phase of a mold.
A brief introduction was made in which the objectives of the dissertation are presented and a little of the
history of the design of experiments.
This is followed by the history of the mold industry sector in Portugal, the mold is described and the
main stages it goes through in its production. A brief explanation of these phases is also given, giving
greater emphasis to the machining phase, specifically to erosion processes. The following chapter
explains Taguchi's method and its application to electroerosion.
Then we move to the planning of the trials where the quality characteristics that we want to study are
identified, the parameters to be optimized from among the possible ones always identified in view of
the quality characteristics to improve. The Taguchi method is applied and the trials are performed.
With the obtained results an analysis is made and proposed machining models that are also tested and
the appropriate conclusions are drawn
Objectivo: O objectivo desta investigação é testar a validade do modelo cultural Global
Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) apresentado por House et
comportamentos/práticas de gestão medidos pelo LPI.Purpose: The aim of this investigation is to study the validity of the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) cultural model presented by House et al.
(2004) in the prediction of leadership practices, measured by the Leadership Practices
Inventory (LPI) created by Kouzes and Posner (2003).
Design/methodology/approach: In this investigation we selected a quantitative approach.
The data was collected from 1628 master students in the management area, from 54
Universitary Institutions in fourteen countries. We conducted Multigroup Confirmatory
Factor Analysis to validade the LPI questionnaire and to analyse the results of the Hypotheses
we used correlation and comparison of means tests.
Findings: The results of our study support the scientific perspective that transformational
leadership is both a universal and a culturally contingent phenomenon. This research proposes
the use of a shorter version of LPI questionnaire in multy-country studies. This new version
was designated by Transformed LPI. We found empirical evidence that In-Group
Collectivism, Assertiveness and Uncertainty Avoidance are important contextual moderator
factors for Encourage the Heart, Inspire a Shared Vision and Enable Others to Act leadership
practices. Our study indicates that a reorganization of GLOBE’s Bands in the four cultural
dimensions investigated increase the ability of the model to predict leadership practices. The
Cultural Clusters are also a good tool for researchers to predict similarities and differences
among countries.
Practical Implications: This study provides evidence for a partial external validation of
GLOBE model to predict leadership practices and suggests new lines for cross-cultural
research based on the proposed reorganization of Cultutal “Bands” and the original model of
Cultural Clusters.
Originality/Value: This investigation tries to fulfill a gap in the literature related to the
validation of GLOBE´s cultural model and provides information about countries that
normally do not appear in the literature. It is also one of the biggest studies using GLOBE’s
cultural model to predict leadership practices measured by the Leadership Practices Inventory
Liderança intercultural. As dimensões culturais de G. Hofstede e as práticas de liderança do LPI
The aim of this study is to realise if the leadership practices of the master students fit
with the characterization of the Portuguese culture made by G. Hofstede. This
characterization results from the interpretation of the Portuguese scores presented in
cultural dimensions defined by him, in 1980. The study also tries to find gender
differences in leadership practices.
To proceed with these goals it was distributed the Leadership Practices Inventory – 3rd
Edition, developed by M. Kouzes and B. Posner, to 116 master students from ISCTE.
In the study it was confirmed that the master students engage more in Model the Way
practices than in Challenge the Processes practices. This fact is consistent with the
Portuguese scores in Power Distance and Uncertainty Avoidance cultural dimensions.
No significant gender differences in Enable others to Act and Encourage the Heart
practices were found.
The results of the study allow us to characterize the master students as leaders that: treat
their collaborators with dignity and respect; respect promises and commitments;
develop cooperative relationships with the people they work with; appreciate the
contributions of their team and praise people for the job well done. The master students
are also leaders that neither promote nor share a group vision.ISCT
An ecological and fishing approach to support management decisions

Live crab bait in traps was used up to 2010 and banned in 2012. Such regulation, based on co-management advice, was not established under a scientific fundament. As a result, a long-standing controversy ensued with some fishing associations claiming that live crab bait increased fishing effort and exploitation rates and therefore risked the octopus stock status, while other fishers denied all these alleged impacts. The issue has not been resolved so far due to lack of scientific studies. In this study, we resolve the controversy conducting experimental fishing to determine by-catch and octopus catch rates using live crab bait versus other types of baits based on fish and assess the stock status of octopus over-time with constant parameters (hypothesis of no effect of the use of live crab bait) versus time-varying parameters (hypothesis of raised exploitation rates and riskier stock status). Bycatch was very low regardless of bait type. Our experimental fishing trials showed that fish-based baits increase bycatch and octopus catch rates. Stock assessment models showed that exploitation rates and stock status do not worsen in years of use of crab bait. We conclude that the use of crab bait in octopus fishery does not lead to increased exploitation rate or risks for stock sustainability status. Other considerations involving fishing costs and fishing operations further highlight the advantages of lifting the ban on the use of live crab bait in the Algarve octopus fishery.publishersversionpublishe
Ecological sensitivity and vulnerability of fishing fleet landings to climate change across regions
The degree of exposure of fishing communities to environmental changes can be partially determined by the vulnerability of the target species and the landings composition. Hence, identifying the species that ecologically most contribute to the vulnerability of the landings are key steps to evaluate the risk posed by climate change. We analyse the temporal variability in intrinsic sensitivity and the ecological vulnerability of the Portuguese fisheries landings, considering the species proportions derived both from the weights and revenues. To account for the diversification of species of each fleet, we explored the species dependence of the fishery in combination with the vulnerability of them. The analyses were carried out separately for three fleet typologies and three regions. Opposite to what has been observed at a global scale, the ecological sensitivity of the fisheries landings between 1989 and 2015 did not display a decline across areas or fishing fleets. Considering each fleet independently, for trawling, where average vulnerability was lower than in the other fleets, the sensitivity of the landings increased since the 2000s. On the other hand, the high vulnerability found in multi-gear fleets was compensated by diversification of the species caught, while purse-seine fleets targeted low vulnerability species but presented a high fishery dependence on few species. The results highlight the importance of combining information on ecological vulnerability and diversification of fishing resources at a regional scale while providing a measure of the ecological exposure to climate change.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia | Ref.
