The effect of manganese oxide on the sinterability of hydroxyapatite
The sinterability of manganese oxide (MnO2) doped hydroxyapatite (HA) ranging from 0.05 to 1 wt% was investigated. Green samples were prepared and sintered in air at temperatures ranging from 1000 to 1400 ยฐC. Sintered bodies were characterized to determine the phase stability, grain size, bulk density, hardness, fracture toughness and Young's modulus. XRD analysis revealed that the HA phase stability was not disrupted throughout the sintering regime employed. In general, samples containing less than 0.5 wt% MnO2 and when sintered at lower temperatures exhibited higher mechanical properties than the undoped HA. The study revealed that all the MnO2-doped HA achieved >99% relative density when sintered at 1100โ1250 ยฐC as compared to the undoped HA which could only attained highest value of 98.9% at 1150 ยฐC. The addition of 0.05 wt% MnO2 was found to be most beneficial as the samples exhibited the highest hardness of 7.58 GPa and fracture toughness of 1.65 MPam1/2 as compared to 5.72 GPa and 1.22 MPam1/2 for the undoped HA when sintered at 1000 ยฐC. Additionally, it was found that the MnO2-doped samples attained E values above 110 GPa when sintered at temperature as low as 1000 ยฐC if compared to 1050 ยฐC for the undoped HA
Less is More: Micro-expression Recognition from Video using Apex Frame
Despite recent interest and advances in facial micro-expression research,
there is still plenty room for improvement in terms of micro-expression
recognition. Conventional feature extraction approaches for micro-expression
video consider either the whole video sequence or a part of it, for
representation. However, with the high-speed video capture of micro-expressions
(100-200 fps), are all frames necessary to provide a sufficiently meaningful
representation? Is the luxury of data a bane to accurate recognition? A novel
proposition is presented in this paper, whereby we utilize only two images per
video: the apex frame and the onset frame. The apex frame of a video contains
the highest intensity of expression changes among all frames, while the onset
is the perfect choice of a reference frame with neutral expression. A new
feature extractor, Bi-Weighted Oriented Optical Flow (Bi-WOOF) is proposed to
encode essential expressiveness of the apex frame. We evaluated the proposed
method on five micro-expression databases: CAS(ME), CASME II, SMIC-HS,
SMIC-NIR and SMIC-VIS. Our experiments lend credence to our hypothesis, with
our proposed technique achieving a state-of-the-art F1-score recognition
performance of 61% and 62% in the high frame rate CASME II and SMIC-HS

The heterogeneous effects of CSR dimensions on financial performance -a new approach for CSR measurement
This paper investigates the differential effects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) dimensions on corporate financial performance (CFP) across sectors in China. This research uses a unique data set provided by China Stock Market and Accounting Research (CSMAR), showing expenditure on CSR programs from 568 Chinese publicly traded firm-year observations from 2008 to 2017. Compared to previous studies using scores produced by extra-financial rating agencies, this research quantifies CSR efforts by corporate expenditure on CSR practices, which offers quantitative and precise information in explaining the CSR-CFP link. The results show that the dimension of the environment has negative effects on financial performance in capital-intensive manufacturing industries. The impact of HR expenditure on CFP is negative in the tertiary sector and resource-intensive manufacturing industries. However, CSR investments in the community are positively related to financial performance in resource-intensive industries and other secondary sector (mining, construction, and utilities). Firms, in general, could gain benefits when spending more on business and financial stakeholders
Chandra Observations of Galaxy Zoo Mergers: Frequency of Binary Active Nuclei in Massive Mergers
We present the results from a Chandra pilot study of 12 massive galaxy
mergers selected from Galaxy Zoo. The sample includes major mergers down to a
host galaxy mass of 10 that already have optical AGN
signatures in at least one of the progenitors. We find that the coincidences of
optically selected active nuclei with mildly obscured ( cm) X-ray nuclei are relatively common (8/12), but the
detections are too faint ( counts per nucleus; erg s cm) to reliably separate starburst and
nuclear activity as the origin of the X-ray emission. Only one merger is found
to have confirmed binary X-ray nuclei, though the X-ray emission from its
southern nucleus could be due solely to star formation. Thus, the occurrences
of binary AGN in these mergers are rare (0-8%), unless most merger-induced

Broadband spin-controlled focusing via logarithmic-spiral nanoslits of varying width
This work presents analytical, numerical and experimental demonstrations of light diffracted through a logarithmic spiral (LS) nanoslit, which forms a type of switchable and focus-tunable structure. Owing to a strong dependence on the incident photon spin, the proposed LS-nanoslit converges incoming light of opposite handedness (to that of the LS-nanoslit) into a confined subwavelength spot, while it shapes light with similar chirality into a donut-like intensity profile. Benefitting from the varying width of the LS-nanoslit, different incident wavelengths interfere constructively at different positions, i.e., the focal length shifts from 7.5 ฮผm (at ฮป = 632.8 nm) to 10 ฮผm (at ฮป = 488 nm), which opens up new opportunities for tuning and spatially separating broadband light at the micrometer scale
Search for Intrinsic Excitations in 152Sm
The 685 keV excitation energy of the first excited 0+ state in 152Sm makes it
an attractive candidate to explore expected two-phonon excitations at low
energy. Multiple-step Coulomb excitation and inelastic neutron scattering
studies of 152Sm are used to probe the E2 collectivity of excited 0+ states in
this "soft" nucleus and the results are compared with model predictions. No
candidates for two-phonon K=0+ quadrupole vibrational states are found. A 2+,
K=2 state with strong E2 decay to the first excited K=0+ band and a probable 3+

Search for the Lepton-Number-Violating Decay
A sensitive search for the lepton-number-violating decay has been performed using a sample of hyperons
produced in 800 GeV/ -Cu collisions. We obtain at 90% confidence, improving on the best

Melioidosis: an emerging infection in Taiwan?
From January 1982 to May 2000, 17 infections caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei were diagnosed in 15 patients in Taiwan; almost all the infections were diagnosed from 1994 to May 2000. Of the 15 patients, 9 (60%) had underlying diseases, and 10 (67%) had bacteremic pneumonia. Thirteen (76%) episodes of infection were considered indigenous. Four patients died of melioidosis. Seventeen B. pseudomallei isolates, recovered from eight patients from November 1996 to May 2000, were analyzed to determine their in vitro susceptibilities to 14 antimicrobial agents, cellular fatty acid and biochemical reaction profiles, and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA patterns. Eight strains (highly related isolates) were identified. All isolates were arabinose non-assimilators and were susceptible to amoxicillin-clavulanate, piperacillin-tazobactam, imipenem, and meropenem. No spread of the strain was documented
