    Ca-substitution and O-doping effects in superconducting Cu(Ba0.8Sr0.2)2(Yb1-xCax)Cu2O6+z obtained from neutron diffraction refinements

    Distinct calcium and oxygen doping effects were studied in the Cu(Ba0.8Sr0.2)2(Yb1−xCax)Cu2O6+z (Cu−1212:P) system by means of neutron diffraction and superconducting quantum interference device experiments in the wide substitution ranges of 0<~x<~0.35 and 0<z<1. The effectiveness of the two different ways to introduce holes into the CuO2 planes was compared both in respect to the capability to increase Tc and in terms of the hole production as estimated from neutron-diffraction data via bond-valence-sum calculation. Oxygen doping was found to increase the hole concentration less efficiently, and further, at a certain hole concentration value higher Tc values were obtained with calcium substitution than with oxygen doping. The two different hole-doping methods exhibited also different Tc vs Cu-O bond length relations. As a conclusion, the possible roles of the hole distribution in the in-plane Cu-O bond and the flatness of the CuO2 planes in determining the superconducting properties were recognized.Peer reviewe

    Complexes of Zn(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II) with 2'-[1-(2- pyridinyl)ethyhdene]oxamohydrazide (Hapsox) were synthesized and their structures were determined. All the complexes are of a neutral type with two apsox ligands coordinated to Zn(II) and one apsox ligand coordinated to Pd(II) or Pt(II). In each case. the polydentate was coordinated via pyridine and hydrazone nitrogens and alpha-oxyazine oxygen. forming an octahedral geometry around Zn(II). and a square planar one around Pd(II) and Pt(II). The structure determination was performed by IR. H-1-NMR and C-13-NMR spectroscopy, and for the Zn(II) complex by X-ray structure analysis.U ovom radu opisana je sinteza i strukturna karakterizacija kompleksa Zn(II) Pd(II) i Pt(II) sa 2’-[1-(2-piridinil)etiliden]oksamohidrazidom (Hapsox). Sva tri dobijena kompleksa su neutralnog tipa sa dva koordinovana apsox liganda u slučaju kompleksa Zn(II), odnosno jednim apsox ligandom u slučaju Pd(II) i Pt(II) kompleksa. Koordinacija polidentata je u svim kompleksima ostvarena preko piridinskog azota, hidrazonskog azota i α-oksiazinskog kiseonika gradeći oktaedarsku geometriju oko Zn(II), odnosno kvadratno planarnu geometriju oko Pd(II) i Pt(II).Potvrdu za ovakve strukture dobili smo iz IC 1H-NMR i 13C-NMR spektara, dok je za Zn(II) kompleks urađena i rendgenska strukturna analiza

    Structural and magnetic properties of Mn3-xCdxTeO6 (x = 0, 1, 1.5 and 2)

    Mn3TeO6 exhibits a corundum-related A3TeO6 structure and a complex magnetic structure involving two magnetic orbits for the Mn atoms [*]. Mn3-xCdxTeO6 (x=0, 1, 1.5 and 2) ceramics were synthesized by solid state reaction and investigated using X-ray powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. Cd2+ replaces Mn2+ cations without greatly affecting the structure of the compound. The Mn and Cd cations were found to be randomly distributed over the A-site. Magnetization measurements indicated that the samples order antiferromagnetically at low temperature with a transition temperature that decreases with increasing Cd doping. The nuclear and magnetic structure of one specially prepared 114Cd containing sample: Mn1.5(114Cd)1.5TeO6, was studied using neutron powder diffraction over the temperature range 2 to 295 K. Mn1.5(114Cd)1.5TeO6 was found to order in an incommensurate helical magnetic structure, very similar to that of Mn3TeO6 [*].     Uniform magnetic fields in density-functional theory

    We construct a density-functional formalism adapted to uniform external magnetic fields that is intermediate between conventional Density Functional Theory and Current-Density Functional Theory (CDFT). In the intermediate theory, which we term LDFT, the basic variables are the den- sity, the canonical momentum, and the paramagnetic contribution to the magnetic moment. Both a constrained-search formulation and a convex formulation in terms of Legendre–Fenchel transfor- mations are constructed. Many theoretical issues in CDFT find simplified analogues in LDFT. We prove results concerning N-representability, Hohenberg–Kohn-like mappings, existence of minimiz- ers in the constrained-search expression, and a restricted analogue to gauge invariance. The issue of additivity of the energy over non-interacting subsystems, which is qualitatively different in LDFT and CDFT, is also discussed

    Two novel missense mutations in the myostatin gene identified in Japanese patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy

    BACKGROUND: Myostatin is a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth. Truncating mutations in the myostatin gene have been reported to result in gross muscle hypertrophy. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), the most common lethal muscle wasting disease, is a result of an absence of muscle dystrophin. Although this disorder causes a rather uniform pattern of muscle wasting, afflicted patients display phenotypic variability. We hypothesized that genetic variation in myostatin is a modifier of the DMD phenotype. METHODS: We analyzed 102 Japanese DMD patients for mutations in the myostatin gene. RESULTS: Two polymorphisms that are commonly observed in Western countries, p.55A>T and p.153K>R, were not observed in these Japanese patients. An uncommon polymorphism of p.164E>K was uncovered in four cases; each patient was found to be heterozygous for this polymorphism, which had the highest frequency of the polymorphism observed in the Japanese patients. Remarkably, two patients were found to be heterozygous for one of two novel missense mutations (p.95D>H and p.156L>I). One DMD patient carrying a novel missense mutation of p.95D>H was not phenotypically different from the non-carriers. The other DMD patient was found to carry both a novel mutation (p.156L>I) and a known polymorphism (p.164E>K) in one allele, although his phenotype was not significantly modified. Any nucleotide change creating a target site for micro RNAs was not disclosed in the 3' untranslated region. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that heterozygous missense mutations including two novel mutations did not produce an apparent increase in muscle strength in Japanese DMD cases, even in a patient carrying two missense mutations

    Preparation, structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of LaFeO3-PbTiO3 solid solutions

    Solid solutions of (1-x)LaFeO3-(x)PbTiO3 (0<x<1) have been prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. These complex perovskites have been studied by means of X-ray (XRPD) and neutron powder (NPD) diffraction, complemented with dielectric, magnetic, heat capacity and M\"ossbauer measurements. Complete solubility in the perovskite series was demonstrated. The NPD and XRPD patterns were successfully refined as orthorhombic (x \leq 0.7) and tetragonal (x \geq 0.8). A composition-driven phase transformation occurs within the interval 0.7<x<0.8. The samples with x<0.5 showed evidence of long-range magnetic ordering with an G-type antiferromagnetic arrangement of the magnetic moments of the Fe3+ cations in the B-site with propagation vector k = (0,0,0). Based on the obtained experimental data, a combined structural and magnetic phase diagram has been constructed. The factors governing the structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of (1-x) LaFeO3 - (x)PbTiO3 solid solutions are discussed, as well as their possible multiferroicity.Comment: 33 pages, 15 figure
