The decay of Batchelor and Saffman rotating turbulence
The decay rate of isotropic and homogeneous turbulence is known to be
affected by the large-scale spectrum of the initial perturbations, associated
with at least two cannonical self-preserving solutions of the von
K\'arm\'an-Howarth equation: the so-called Batchelor and Saffman spectra. The
effect of long-range correlations in the decay of anisotropic flows is less
clear, and recently it has been proposed that the decay rate of rotating
turbulence may be independent of the large-scale spectrum of the initial
perturbations. We analyze numerical simulations of freely decaying rotating
turbulence with initial energy spectra (Batchelor turbulence) and
(Saffman turbulence) and show that, while a self-similar decay
cannot be identified for the total energy, the decay is indeed affected by
long-range correlations. The decay of two-dimensional and three-dimensional
modes follows distinct power laws in each case, which are consistent with
predictions derived from the anisotropic von K\'arm\'an-Howarth equation, and
with conservation of anisotropic integral quantities by the flow evolution
The decay of turbulence in rotating flows
We present a parametric space study of the decay of turbulence in rotating
flows combining direct numerical simulations, large eddy simulations, and
phenomenological theory. Several cases are considered: (1) the effect of
varying the characteristic scale of the initial conditions when compared with
the size of the box, to mimic "bounded" and "unbounded" flows; (2) the effect
of helicity (correlation between the velocity and vorticity); (3) the effect of
Rossby and Reynolds numbers; and (4) the effect of anisotropy in the initial
conditions. Initial conditions include the Taylor-Green vortex, the
Arn'old-Beltrami-Childress flow, and random flows with large-scale energy
spectrum proportional to . The decay laws obtained in the simulations for
the energy, helicity, and enstrophy in each case can be explained with
phenomenological arguments that separate the decay of two-dimensional from
three-dimensional modes, and that take into account the role of helicity and
rotation in slowing down the energy decay. The time evolution of the energy
spectrum and development of anisotropies in the simulations are also discussed.
Finally, the effect of rotation and helicity in the skewness and kurtosis of
the flow is considered.Comment: Sections reordered to address comments by referee
Measures of Obesity Associated with Asthma Diagnosis in Ethnic Minority Children
Objective. The study objective was to examine relationships between different body size measurements and asthma in ethnic minority children. Methods. We used data from a community-based study of 505 children aged 6-to-8 years old to study the association of percent body fat, fat distribution, and BMI percentile with asthma diagnosis. Poisson regression models were used to compute prevalence ratios (PRs) for sex-specific quintiles of the body fat measures on the main outcome of asthma. Results. When comparing the highest quintile of each body fat measure to the combined lowest two quintiles, higher body mass index percentile, percent body fat, and waist circumference all were associated with a higher likelihood of physician-diagnosed asthma (PR = 1.63 (95% CI 1.12–2.39), 1.50 (95% CI 1.02–2.21), and 1.56 (95% CI 1.04–2.34), resp.). Conclusions. This study found a significant association between increased body size and asthma diagnosis, regardless of the measurement examined
Exposure to fogger trucks and breast cancer incidence in the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project: a case-control study
Background: Few studies have supported an association between breast cancer and DDT, usually assessed with biomarkers that cannot discern timing of exposure, or differentiate between the accumulation of chronic low-dose versus acute high-dose exposures in the past. Previous studies suggest that an association may be evident only among women exposed to DDT during biologically susceptible windows, or among those diagnosed with estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor-positive (ER+PR+) breast cancer subtypes. Self-reported acute exposure to a fogger truck, which sprayed DDT prior to 1972, was hypothesized to increase the risk of breast cancer, particularly among women exposed at a young age or diagnosed with ER+PR+ breast cancer. Methods: We examined these possibilities in the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project (LIBCSP) (1,508 cases, 1,556 controls), which included exposure assessment by structured questionnaire and serum samples collected between 1996–1998, using adjusted logistic and polytomous regression to estimate ORs and 95% CIs. Results: Women with ER+PR+ breast cancer had a 44% increased odds of ever seeing a pre-1972 fogger truck compared to other subtypes (OR = 1.44; 95% CI 1.08-1.93). However, there was little variation in the observed increase in breast cancer risk when considering all women who reported seeing a pre-1972 fogger truck at their residence (OR = 1.16; 95% CI 0.98, 1.37), or during hypothesized susceptible windows. Self-reported acute exposure was not correlated with serum concentrations, a biomarker of long-term exposure. Conclusions: These findings support the hypothesis that seeing a fogger truck, a proxy measure for acute DDT exposure, may be associated with ER+PR+ tumors, the most commonly diagnosed breast cancer subtype among American women
A test of water vapor radiometer-based troposphere calibration using VLBI observations on a 21-kilometer baseline
Simultaneous very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and water vapor radiometer (WVR) measurements on a 21 km baseline showed that calibration by WVRs removed a significant fraction of the effect of tropospheric delay fluctuations for these experiments. From comparison of the residual delay variations within scans and between scans, the total tropospheric contribution t the delay residuals for each of the three 5 to 20 hour sessions was estimated as 1, 17, and 10%, with the first value being uncertain. The observed improvement in rms residual delay from WVR calibration during these three sessions was 4, 16, and 2%, respectively. The improvement is consistent with the estimated 2 to 3 mm path delay precision of current WVRs. The VLBI measurements, of natural radio sources, were conducted in April and May 1993 at Goldstone, California. Dual-frequency (2.3 and 8.4 GHz) observations were employed to remove the effects of charged particles from the data. Measurements with co-pointed WVRs, located within 50 m of the axis of each antenna, were performed to test the ability of the WVRs to calibrate line-of-sight path delays. Factors that made WVR performance assessment difficult included (1) the fact that the level of tropospheric fluctuations was smaller than is typical for Goldstone during these experiments and (2) VLBI delay variations on longer time scales (i.e., over multiple scans) contained uncalibrated instrumental effects (probably a result of slow temperature variations in the VLBI hardware) that were larger than the tropospheric effects
Polychlorinated biphenyls and their association with survival following breast cancer
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are hypothesized to influence breast carcinogenesis due to their persistence and potential to induce estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects. Whether PCBs influence survival following breast cancer is unknown
Multivisceral intestinal transplantation: Surgical pathology
We report the diagnostic surgical pathology of two children who underwent multivisceral abdominal transplantation and survived for 1 month and 6 months. There is little relevant literature, and diagnostic criteria for the various clinical possibilities are not established; this is made more complicated by the simultaneous occurrence of more than one process. We based our interpretations on conventional histology, augmented with immunohistology, including HLA staining that distinguished graft from host cells in situ. In some instances functional analysis of T cells propagated from the same biopsies was available and was used to corroborate morphological interpretations. A wide spectrum of changes was encountered. Graft-versus-host disease, a prime concern before surgery, was not seen. Rejection was severe in 1 patient, not present in the other, and both had evidence of lymphoproliferative disease, which was related to Epstein-Barr virus. Bacterial translocation through the gut wall was also a feature in both children. This paper documents and illustrates the various diagnostic possibilities.. © 1989 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted
Modular symbols in Iwasawa theory
This survey paper is focused on a connection between the geometry of
and the arithmetic of over global fields,
for integers . For over , there is an explicit
conjecture of the third author relating the geometry of modular curves and the
arithmetic of cyclotomic fields, and it is proven in many instances by the work
of the first two authors. The paper is divided into three parts: in the first,
we explain the conjecture of the third author and the main result of the first
two authors on it. In the second, we explain an analogous conjecture and result
for over . In the third, we pose questions for general
over the rationals, imaginary quadratic fields, and global function fields.Comment: 43 page
Cancer in general responders participating in world trade center health programs, 2003-2013
© The Author(s) 2020. Published by Oxford University Press. Background: Following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC), thousands of workers were exposed to an array of toxins known to cause adverse health effects, including cancer. This study evaluates cancer incidence in the WTC Health Program General Responder Cohort occurring within 12 years post exposure. Methods: The study population consisted of 28729 members of the General Responder Cohort enrolled from cohort inception, July 2002 to December 31, 2013. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated with cancer case inclusion and follow-up starting post September 11, 2001 (unrestricted) and, alternatively, to account for selection bias, with case inclusion and follow-up starting 6 months after enrollment in the WTC Health Program (restricted). Case ascertainment was based on linkage with six state cancer registries. Under the restricted criterion, hazard ratios were estimated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models for all cancer sites combined and for prostate cancer. Results: Restricted analyses identified 1072 cancers in 999 responders, with elevations in cancer incidence for all cancer sites combined (SIR = 1.09, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02 to 1.16), prostate cancer (SIR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.11 to 1.40), thyroid cancer (SIR = 2.19, 95% CI = 1.71 to 2.75), and leukemia (SIR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.01 to 1.92). Cancer incidence was not associated with any WTC exposure index (composite or individual) for all cancer sites combined or for prostate cancer. Conclusion: Our analyses show statistically significant elevations in cancer incidence for all cancer sites combined and for prostate and thyroid cancers and leukemia. Multivariable analyses show no association with magnitude or type of exposure
