    Adolf Hitler has been called many things since his rise to power in 1933 – cruel, maniacal, crazy, evil, just to name a few. Today’s youth, however, know him as “funny.” They associate him not with the Holocaust or World War II, but rather, with the Der Untergang YouTube parody videos in which he stars. It is these videos, along with a handful of other humorous Hitler facsimiles that represent contemporary society’s shift in their stance on the dictator. Though these videos were created to incite laughter, they have provided a glimpse into the way that many people deal with a tragic situation from which they are far removed: humor. The purpose of this Thesis explores and analyzes the social implications of the popularity of these videos

    C1q acts in the tumour microenvironment as a cancer-promoting factor independently of complement activation

    Complement C1q is the activator of the classical pathway. However, it is now recognized that C1q can exert functions unrelated to complement activation. Here we show that C1q, but not C4, is expressed in the stroma and vascular endothelium of several human malignant tumours. Compared with wild-type (WT) or C3- or C5-deficient mice, C1q-deficient (C1qa(-/-)) mice bearing a syngeneic B16 melanoma exhibit a slower tumour growth and prolonged survival. This effect is not attributable to differences in the tumour-infiltrating immune cells. Tumours developing in WT mice display early deposition of C1q, higher vascular density and an increase in the number of lung metastases compared with C1qa(-/-) mice. Bone marrow (BM) chimeras between C1qa(-/-) and WT mice identify non-BM-derived cells as the main local source of C1q that can promote cancer cell adhesion, migration and proliferation. Together these findings support a role for locally synthesized C1q in promoting tumour growth

    It has been suggested that muskoxen calve earlier with increasing latitude but the available data do not seem to have been thoroughly analyzed. Therefore, estimated conception dates (K=657) from a wide range of latitudes were compared. The results indicate that conceptions occur about a month earlier in the arctic than at temperate latitudes. This conclusion is consistent with reported observations of mating behaviour and calving season

    Gaussian copula modeling of extreme cold and weak-wind events over Europe conditioned on winter weather regimes

    A transition to renewable energy is needed to mitigate climate change. In Europe, this transition has been led by wind energy, which is one of the fastest growing energy sources. However, energy demand and production are sensitive to meteorological conditions and atmospheric variability at multiple time scales. To accomplish the required balance between these two variables, critical conditions of high demand and low wind energy supply must be considered in the design of energy systems. We describe a methodology for modeling joint distributions of meteorological variables without making any assumptions about their marginal distributions. In this context, Gaussian copulas are used to model the correlated nature of cold and weak-wind events. The marginal distributions are modeled with logistic regressions defining two sets of binary variables as predictors: four large-scale weather regimes and the months of the extended winter season. By applying this framework to ERA5 data, we can compute the joint probabilities of co-occurrence of cold and weak-wind events on a high-resolution grid (0.25 deg). Our results show that a) weather regimes must be considered when modeling cold and weak-wind events, b) it is essential to account for the correlations between these events when modeling their joint distribution, c) we need to analyze each month separately, and d) the highest estimated number of days with compound events are associated with the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (3 days on average over Finland, Ireland, and Lithuania in January, and France and Luxembourg in February) and the Scandinavian Blocking pattern (3 days on average over Ireland in January and Denmark in February). This information could be relevant for application in sub-seasonal to seasonal forecasts of such events

    Are Well Performing Catalysts for the Ring Opening Polymerization of l -Lactide under Mild Laboratory Conditions Suitable for the Industrial Process? the Case of New Highly Active Zn(II) Catalysts

    Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is one of the best candidates as a sustainable plastic material for a circular economy, being biodegradable, bio-based, recyclable, and displaying good thermal and mechanical properties. The industrial production of PLA is mainly based on the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of l-lactide (l-LA) promoted by tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate [Sn(Oct)2] in a continuous solvent-free process operating at temperatures between 180 and 200 °C, above the melting point of the resulting isotactic polymer. Despite the huge efforts in the research of alternative catalysts based on less toxic metals, resulting in a plethora of highly active catalysts under laboratory mild conditions, very few candidates can compete with Sn(Oct)2 under industrially relevant conditions. We report a family of new Zn(II) complexes, bearing variously substituted monoanionic [N,O-] (imidazole[1,5-a]pyrid-3-yl)phenolate ligands, as catalysts for the ROP of l-LA under both mild (20 °C, solvent) and industrially relevant (190 °C, in the melt, technical grade unpurified monomer, very low catalyst loading) conditions. Interestingly, the best performing catalyst under mild conditions is the worst performing under harsh conditions, and, on the contrary, the less active catalysts under mild conditions compete well with Sn(Oct)2 under industrially relevant conditions. Kinetic and DFT mechanistic investigations shed light on the non-trivial role of the 2-pyridine substituent in the catalytic performances at different temperatures. Preliminary depolymerization tests on commercial PLLA samples suggested that the new catalysts can also be a suitable candidate for the chemical recycling of PLA under mild conditions

    Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) for the prevention of migraine in adults

    Background: This is an updated version of the original Cochrane review published in 2005 on selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for preventing migraine and tension-type headache. The original review has been split in two parts and this review now only regards migraine prevention. Another updated review is under development to cover tension-type headache. Migraine is a common disorder. The chronic forms are associated with disability and have a high economic impact. In view of discoveries about the role of serotonin and other neurotransmitters in pain mechanisms, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) have been evaluated for the prevention of migraine. Objectives: To determine the efficacy and tolerability of SSRIs and SNRIs compared to placebo and other active interventions in the prevention of episodic and chronic migraine in adults. Search strategy: For the original review, we searched MEDLINE (1966 to January 2004), EMBASE (1994 to May 2003), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL 2003, Issue 4), and Headache Quarterly (1990 to 2003). For this update, we applied a revised search strategy to reflect the broader type of intervention (SSRIs and SNRIs). We searched CENTRAL (2014, Issue 10), MEDLINE (1946 to November 2014), EMBASE (1980 to November 2014), and PsycINFO (1987 to November 2014). We also checked the reference lists of retrieved articles and searched trial registries for ongoing trials. Selection criteria: We included randomised controlled trials comparing SSRIs or SNRIs with any type of control intervention in participants 18 years and older of either sex with migraine. Data collection and analysis: Two authors independently extracted data (migraine frequency, index, intensity, and duration; use of symptomatic/analgesic medication; days off work; quality of life; mood improvement; cost-effectiveness; and adverse events) and assessed the risk of bias of trials. The primary outcome of this updated review is migraine frequency. Main results: The original review included eight studies on migraine. Overall, we now include 11 studies on five SSRIs and one SNRI with a total of 585 participants. Six studies were placebo-controlled, four compared a SSRI or SNRI to amitriptyline, and one was a head-to-head comparison (escitalopram versus venlafaxine). Most studies had methodological or reporting shortcomings (or both): all studies were at unclear risk of selection and reporting bias. Follow-up rarely extended beyond three months. The lack of adequate power of most of the studies is also a major concern. Few studies explored the effect of SSRIs or SNRIs on migraine frequency, the primary endpoint. Two studies with unclear reporting compared SSRIs and SNRIs to placebo, suggesting a lack of evidence for a difference. Two studies compared SSRIs or SNRIs versus amitriptyline and found no evidence for a difference in terms of migraine frequency (standardised mean difference (SMD) 0.04, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.72 to 0.80; I2 = 72%), or other secondary outcomes such as migraine intensity and duration. SSRIs or SNRIs were generally more tolerable than tricyclics. However, the two groups did not differ in terms of the number of participants who withdrew due to adverse advents or for other reasons (one study, odds ratio (OR) 0.39, 95% CI 0.10 to 1.50 and OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.13 to 1.34). We did not find studies comparing SSRIs or SNRIs with pharmacological treatments other than antidepressants (e.g. antiepileptics and anti-hypertensives)

    Photodynamic activity of chloro(5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato)indium(III)

    Photodynamic activity of chloro(5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato)indium(III) (InTPP) in vitro was investigated for possible use in photodynamic therapy (PDT). The quantum yield of singlet oxygen generation in DMSO of InTPP (F D = 0.72) was higher than 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) (F D = 0.52). Binding sites between photosensitizers and bovine serum albumin (BSA) are independent while binding sites with human red blood cells (RBC) are cooperatives, with one and four binding sites per molecule, respectively. Binding constants with BSA are (1.15 ± 0.07) × 10(5) and (2.6 ± 0.1) × 10(4) L mol-1 and with RBC are (2.40 ± 0.05) × 10(7) L mol-1 e (7.2 ± 0.2) × 10(4) L mol-1 for InTPP and PhotofrinÂź, respectively. InTPP was more efficient than PhotofrinÂź in the photooxidation of L-tryptophan(Trp) and BSA when higher concentrations (14 ”mol L-1) of photosensitizers were used. InTPP was 1.37-1.5 times more effective in the photooxidation of RBC than PhotofrinÂź.
