    The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship Workers’ Remittances, poverty, and economic growth in Sub-Saharan African countries. Workers’ Remittances seem to affect the economic development of recipient countries in the same way as Official Development Aid and Foreign Direct Investment. To achieve this objective, we use the fixed effects panel regression models to determine the link between Remittances and poverty on the one hand, Remittances and growth on the other. Recourse to the instrumental variables method turned out to be better for the estimation of the poverty model, while the standard error correction method proved to be well suited for the estimation of the growth model. Empirical results reveal that, Remittances inflows do not contribute significantly to the reduction of poverty. However, it is important to note that Workers’ Remittances seem to be a key element in boosting economic growth in the same manner as investment. Thus, if decision makers allocate a substantial percentage of the fruits derived from this growth to investment in the development of human capital, physical and basic social infrastructures, it is very likely that poverty will be reduced in the long term

    Predicting Incremental and Future Visual Change in Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration Using Deep Learning

    PURPOSE: To evaluate the predictive utility of quantitative imaging biomarkers, acquired automatically from optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans, of cross-sectional and future visual outcomes of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) starting anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: Treatment-naïve, first-treated eyes of patients with neovascular AMD between 2007 and 2017 at Moorfields Eye Hospital (a large, UK single-centre) undergoing anti-VEGF therapy METHODS: Automatic segmentation was carried out by applying a deep learning segmentation algorithm to 137,379 OCT scans from 6467 eyes of 3261 patients with neovascular AMD. After applying selection criteria 926 eyes of 926 patients were taken forward for analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Correlation coefficients (R2) and mean absolute error (MAE) between quantitative OCT (qOCT) parameters and cross-sectional visual-function. The predictive value of these parameters for short-term visual change i.e. incremental visual acuity [VA] resulting from an individual injection, as well as, VA at distant timepoints (up to 12 months post-baseline). RESULTS: VA at distant timepoints could be predicted: R2 0.80 (MAE 5.0 ETDRS letters) and R2 0.7 (MAE 7.2) post-injection 3 and at 12 months post-baseline (both p < 0.001), respectively. Best performing models included both baseline qOCT parameters and treatment-response. Furthermore, we present proof-of-principle evidence that the incremental change in VA from an injection can be predicted: R2 0.14 (MAE 5.6) for injection 2 and R2 0.11 (MAE 5.0) for injection 3 (both p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Automatic segmentation enables rapid acquisition of quantitative and reproducible OCT biomarkers with potential to inform treatment decisions in the care of neovascular AMD. This furthers development of point-of-care decision-aid systems for personalized medicine

    Quantitative analysis of optical coherence tomography for neovascular age-related macular degeneration using deep learning

    PURPOSE: To apply a deep learning algorithm for automated, objective, and comprehensive quantification of optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans to a large real-world dataset of eyes with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and make the raw segmentation output data openly available for further research. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of OCT images from the Moorfields Eye Hospital AMD Database. PARTICIPANTS: 2473 first-treated eyes and another 493 second-treated eyes that commenced therapy for neovascular AMD between June 2012 and June 2017. METHODS: A deep learning algorithm was used to segment all baseline OCT scans. Volumes were calculated for segmented features such as neurosensory retina (NSR), drusen, intraretinal fluid (IRF), subretinal fluid (SRF), subretinal hyperreflective material (SHRM), retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), hyperreflective foci (HRF), fibrovascular pigment epithelium detachment (fvPED), and serous PED (sPED). Analyses included comparisons between first and second eyes, by visual acuity (VA) and by race/ethnicity, and correlations between volumes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Volumes of segmented features (mm3), central subfield thickness (CST) (μm). RESULTS: In first-treated eyes, the majority had both IRF and SRF (54.7%). First-treated eyes had greater volumes for all segmented tissues, with the exception of drusen, which was greater in second-treated eyes. In first-treated eyes, older age was associated with lower volumes for RPE, SRF, NSR and sPED; in second-treated eyes, older age was associated with lower volumes of NSR, RPE, sPED, fvPED and SRF. Eyes from black individuals had higher SRF, RPE and serous PED volumes, compared with other ethnic groups. Greater volumes of the vast majority of features were associated with worse VA. CONCLUSION: We report the results of large scale automated quantification of a novel range of baseline features in neovascular AMD. Major differences between first and second-treated eyes, with increasing age, and between ethnicities are highlighted. In the coming years, enhanced, automated OCT segmentation may assist personalization of real-world care, and the detection of novel structure-function correlations. These data will be made publicly available for replication and future investigation by the AMD research community

    Circulating complement component 4d (C4d) correlates with tumor volume, chemotherapeutic response and survival in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma

    Only limited information is available on the role of complement activation in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Thus, we investigated the circulating and tissue levels of the complement component 4d (C4d) in MPM. Plasma samples from 55 MPM patients, 21 healthy volunteers (HV) and 14 patients with non-malignant pleural diseases (NMPD) were measured by ELISA for C4d levels. Tissue specimens from 32 patients were analyzed by C4d immunohistochemistry. Tumor volumetry was measured in 20 patients. We found no C4d labeling on tumor cells, but on ectopic lymphoid structures within the tumor stroma. Plasma C4d levels did not significantly differ between MPM, HV or NMPD. Late-stage MPM patients had higher plasma C4d levels compared to early-stage (p = 0.079). High circulating C4d was associated with a higher tumor volume (p = 0.047). Plasma C4d levels following induction chemotherapy were significantly higher in patients with stable/progressive disease compared to those with partial/major response (p = 0.005). Strikingly, patients with low C4d levels at diagnosis had a significantly better overall survival, confirmed in a multivariate cox regression model (hazard ratio 0.263, p = 0.01). Our findings suggest that circulating plasma C4d is a promising new prognostic biomarker in patients with MPM and, moreover, helps to select patients for surgery following induction chemotherapy

    Direct Regulation of CLOCK Expression by REV-ERB

    Circadian rhythms are regulated at the cellular level by transcriptional feedback loops leading to oscillations in expression of key proteins including CLOCK, BMAL1, PERIOD (PER), and CRYPTOCHROME (CRY). The CLOCK and BMAL1 proteins are members of the bHLH class of transcription factors and form a heterodimer that regulates the expression of the PER and CRY genes. The nuclear receptor REV-ERBα plays a key role in regulation of oscillations in BMAL1 expression by directly binding to the BMAL1 promoter and suppressing its expression at certain times of day when REV-ERBα expression levels are elevated. We recently demonstrated that REV-ERBα also regulates the expression of NPAS2, a heterodimer partner of BMAL1. Here, we show that REV-ERBα also regulates the expression another heterodimer partner of BMAL1, CLOCK. We identified a REV-ERBα binding site within the 1st intron of the CLOCK gene using a chromatin immunoprecipitation – microarray screen. Suppression of REV-ERBα expression resulted in elevated CLOCK mRNA expression consistent with REV-ERBα's role as a transcriptional repressor. A REV-ERB response element (RevRE) was identified within this region of the CLOCK gene and was conserved between humans and mice. Additionally, the CLOCK RevRE conferred REV-ERB responsiveness to a heterologous reporter gene. Our data suggests that REV-ERBα plays a dual role in regulation of the activity of the BMAL1/CLOCK heterodimer by regulation of expression of both the BMAL1 and CLOCK genes

    The neural basis of video gaming

    Video game playing is a frequent recreational activity. Previous studies have reported an involvement of dopamine-related ventral striatum. However, structural brain correlates of video game playing have not been investigated. On magnetic resonance imaging scans of 154 14-year-olds, we computed voxel-based morphometry to explore differences between frequent and infrequent video game players. Moreover, we assessed the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task during functional magnetic resonance imaging and the Cambridge Gambling Task (CGT). We found higher left striatal grey matter volume when comparing frequent against infrequent video game players that was negatively correlated with deliberation time in CGT. Within the same region, we found an activity difference in MID task: frequent compared with infrequent video game players showed enhanced activity during feedback of loss compared with no loss. This activity was likewise negatively correlated with deliberation time. The association of video game playing with higher left ventral striatum volume could reflect altered reward processing and represent adaptive neural plasticity

    Protective Ag :TiO2 thin films for pressure sensors in orthopedic prosthesis: the importance of composition, structural and morphological features on the biological response of the coatings

    DC reactive magnetron sputtered Ag:TiO2 nanocomposite thin films were developed to be used as protective coatings in pressure sensor devices. The coatings, with Ag content varying from 0 to about 30 at.%, were prepared and characterized in order to study their biological response. The as-deposited samples were annealed in vacuum at 500 °C in order to evaluate the influence of their morphological and structural differences over the response elicited upon contact with simulated bodily fluids and cultured human cells, as well as selected microorganisms. The results showed that the annealing treatment produced less porous films with an enhanced structure, with a significant reduction in structural defects and improved crystallinity. Additionally, samples with higher Ag contents (≥12.8 at.%) exhibited Ag agglomerates/clusters at the surface, a result anticipated from the XRD data. The crystallization of the TiO2 matrix was also observed by XRD analysis, albeit delayed by the dispersion of Ag into the matrix.     TRY plant trait database - enhanced coverage and open access

    Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives

    Temporal Variability of Surface Reflectance Supersedes Spatial Resolution in Defining Greenland’s Bare-Ice Albedo

    Ice surface albedo is a primary modulator of melt and runoff, yet our understanding of how reflectance varies over time across the Greenland Ice Sheet remains poor. This is due to a disconnect between point or transect scale albedo sampling and the coarser spatial, spectral and/or temporal resolutions of available satellite products. Here, we present time-series of bare-ice surface reflectance data that span a range of length scales, from the 500 m for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer’s MOD10A1 product, to 10 m for Sentinel-2 imagery, 0.1 m spot measurements from ground-based field spectrometry, and 2.5 cm from uncrewed aerial drone imagery. Our results reveal broad similarities in seasonal patterns in bare-ice reflectance, but further analysis identifies short-term dynamics in reflectance distribution that are unique to each dataset. Using these distributions, we demonstrate that areal mean reflectance is the primary control on local ablation rates, and that the spatial distribution of specific ice types and impurities is secondary. Given the rapid changes in mean reflectance observed in the datasets presented, we propose that albedo parameterizations can be improved by (i) quantitative assessment of the representativeness of time-averaged reflectance data products, and, (ii) using temporally-resolved functions to describe the variability in impurity distribution at daily time-scales. We conclude that the regional melt model performance may not be optimally improved by increased spatial resolution and the incorporation of sub-pixel heterogeneity, but instead, should focus on the temporal dynamics of bare-ice albedo
