Analysis of meteorological data from RRS Charles Darwin cruises CD46 and CD47 (BOFS experiment)
The IOSDL MultiMet meteorological instrumentation system was used during the BOFS experiment on RRS Charles Darwin cruises 46 and 47. This report describes and evaluates the quality of the meteorological data obtained. Recommendations for using the data include a 0.45°C correction to the forward dry bulb temperature and the use of wind directions from the main mast wind vane rather than the foremast propellor -vane. The temperature difference between the foremast and wheelhousetop psychrometer measurements was found to be a function of solar radiation and wind speed. A model of this effect was developed. From anemometer comparisons acceleration of the air flow over the ship was estimated to be 4%. The solar radiation sensors
agreed to within a few W/m2 except for anomalous values on two days
Non-perturbative Power Corrections to Ghost and Gluon Propagators
We study the dominant non-perturbative power corrections to the ghost and
gluon propagators in Landau gauge pure Yang-Mills theory using OPE and lattice
simulations. The leading order Wilson coefficients are proven to be the same
for both propagators. The ratio of the ghost and gluon propagators is thus free
from this dominant power correction. Indeed, a purely perturbative fit of this
ratio gives smaller value (MeV) of \Lambda_{\ms} than the one
obtained from the propagators separately(MeV). This argues in
favour of significant non-perturbative power corrections in the
ghost and gluon propagators. We check the self-consistency of the method.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures; replaced with revised version, to appear in JHE
Magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetotransport properties of RSn_{1+x}Ge_{1-x} compounds (R=Gd, Tb, Er; x=0.1)
We have studied the magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetotransport properties
of RSn1+xGe1-x(R=Gd, Tb, Er; x=0.1) series by means of magnetization, heat
capacity and resistivity measurements. It has been found that all the compounds
crystallize in the orthorhombic crystal structure described by the
centrosymmetric space group Cmcm (No. 63). The magnetic susceptibility and heat
capacity data suggest that all the compounds are antiferromagnetic. Large
negative values of {\theta}p in case of GdSn1.1Ge0.9 and TbSn1.1Ge0.9 indicate
that strong antiferromagnetic interactions are involved, which is also
reflected in the magnetization isotherms. On the other hand ErSn1.1Ge0.9 shows
weak antiferromagnetic interaction. The heat capacity data have been analyzed
by fitting the temperature dependence and the values of {\theta}D and {\gamma}
have been estimated. Among these three compounds, ErSn1.1Ge0.9 shows
considerable magnetic entropy change of 9.5 J/kg K and an adiabatic temperature
change of 3.2 K for a field of 50 kOe. The resistivity data in different
temperature regimes have been analyzed and the dominant contributions have been
identified. All the compounds show small but positive magnetoresistance.Comment: 23 pages,11 figure
Coronal mass ejections as expanding force-free structures
We mode Solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) as expanding force-fee magnetic
structures and find the self-similar dynamics of configurations with spatially
constant \alpha, where {\bf J} =\alpha {\bf B}, in spherical and cylindrical
geometries, expanding spheromaks and expanding Lundquist fields
correspondingly. The field structures remain force-free, under the conventional
non-relativistic assumption that the dynamical effects of the inductive
electric fields can be neglected. While keeping the internal magnetic field
structure of the stationary solutions, expansion leads to complicated internal
velocities and rotation, induced by inductive electric field. The structures
depends only on overall radius R(t) and rate of expansion \dot{R}(t) measured
at a given moment, and thus are applicable to arbitrary expansion laws. In case
of cylindrical Lundquist fields, the flux conservation requires that both axial
and radial expansion proceed with equal rates. In accordance with observations,
the model predicts that the maximum magnetic field is reached before the

Quadrupole Instabilities of Relativistic Rotating Membranes
We generalize recent study of the stability of isotropic (spherical) rotating
membranes to the anisotropic ellipsoidal membrane. We find that while the
stability persists for deformations of spin , the quadrupole and higher
spin deformations () lead to instabilities. We find the relevant
instability modes and the corresponding eigenvalues. These indicate that the
ellipsoidal rotating membranes generically decay into finger-like

Law, politics and the governance of English and Scottish joint-stock companies 1600-1850
This article examines the impact of law on corporate governance by means of a case study of joint-stock enterprise in England and Scotland before 1850. Based on a dataset of over 450 company constitutions together with qualitative information on governance practice, it finds little evidence to support the hypothesis that common-law regimes such as England were more supportive of economic growth than civil-law jurisdictions such as Scotland: indeed, levels of shareholder protection were slightly stronger in the civil-law zone. Other factors, such as local political institutions, played a bigger role in shaping organisational forms and business practice
Four-loop renormalization of QCD: full set of renormalization constants and anomalous dimensions
The anomalous dimensions of the gluon and ghost fields as well as the
ghost-ghost-gluon and quark-quark-gluon vertexes are analytically computed in
pQCD. Taken together with already available anomalous dimensions of the
coupling constant, the quark field and the mass the results lead to complete
knowledge of all renormalization constant entering into the renormalization of
the QCD Lagrangian at the four-loop level. As a by-product we get scale and
scheme invariant gluon and ghost propagators at NNNLO. Using a theorem due to
Dudal, Verschelde and Sorella, we also construct the four-loop anomalous
dimension of the ``gluon mass operator'', A^2, in the Landau gauge.Comment: a reference added. Final version accepted for publication in Nucl.

Groundwater recharge influenced by ephemeral river flow and land use in the semiarid Limpopo Province of South Africa
Determining the sustainability of groundwater use in drylands with high climate variability is complex. Central to this determination is an understanding of groundwater recharge and associated processes and controls. Groundwater recharge in drylands can occur by diffuse and focused recharge (focused recharge being associated with intense episodic rainfall events and ephemeral river flow, predicted to increase and intensify with climate change). This study evaluated the relative significance and dominant controls on these two recharge processes. Ten groundwater hydrographs with multidecadal observations were collated from the Limpopo Province, South Africa, based on their proximity to river channels and rain gauges, representing diversity in local climate, landscape, vegetation, and hydrogeological conditions. The hydrographs showed that groundwater-level rises are sensitive to rainfall intensity during the rainy season, with generally larger increases after years with large episodic rainfall events, which disproportionately contribute to groundwater replenishment. Recharge processes and annual recharge volumes were quantified using the water-table fluctuation method and the numerical model HYDRUS-1D. This allowed for the inference of additional recharge contributions from focused recharge in proximity to ephemeral rivers, up to a factor of five relative to diffuse recharge. The analysis revealed synchronicity and linear correlation between annual river discharge and recharge close to the river, substantiating the importance of focused recharge close to the river network. The study showed that recharge in drylands is subject to large spatial and temporal variation and that consideration of focused and episodic recharge is critically important for managing groundwater resources at various scales in these regions
Density functional study of Au (n=2-20) clusters: lowest-energy structures and electronic properties
We have investigated the lowest-energy structures and electronic properties
of the Au(n=2-20) clusters based on density functional theory (DFT) with
local density approximation. The small Au clusters adopt planar structures
up to n=6. Tabular cage structures are preferred in the range of n=10-14 and a
structural transition from tabular cage-like structure to compact
near-spherical structure is found around n=15. The most stable configurations
obtained for Au and Au clusters are amorphous instead of
icosahedral or fcc-like, while the electronic density of states sensitively
depend on the cluster geometry. Dramatic odd-even alternative behaviors are
obtained in the relative stability, HOMO-LUMO gaps and ionization potentials of
gold clusters. The size evolution of electronic properties is discussed and the
theoretical ionization potentials of Au clusters compare well with

Mass Spectra of Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theories in 1+1 Dimensions
Physical mass spectra of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in 1+1 dimensions
are evaluated in the light-cone gauge with a compact spatial dimension. The
supercharges are constructed and the infrared regularization is unambiguously
prescribed for supercharges, instead of the light-cone Hamiltonian. This
provides a manifestly supersymmetric infrared regularization for the
discretized light-cone approach. By an exact diagonalization of the supercharge
matrix between up to several hundred color singlet bound states, we find a
