The Brazilian Tunable Filter Imager for the SOAR telescope
This paper presents a new Tunable Filter Instrument for the SOAR telescope.
The Brazilian Tunable Filter Imager (BTFI) is a versatile, new technology,
tunable optical imager to be used in seeing-limited mode and at higher spatial
fidelity using the SAM Ground-Layer Adaptive Optics facility at the SOAR
telescope. The instrument opens important new science capabilities for the SOAR
community, from studies of the centers of nearby galaxies and the insterstellar
medium to statistical cosmological investigations. The BTFI takes advantage of
three new technologies. The imaging Bragg Tunable Filter concept utilizes
Volume Phase Holographic Gratings in a double-pass configuration, as a tunable
filter, while a new Fabry-Perot (FP) concept involves technologies which allow
a single FP etalon to act over a large range of interference orders and
spectral resolutions. Both technologies will be in the same instrument.
Spectral resolutions spanning the range between 25 and 30,000 can be achieved
through the use of iBTF at low resolution and scanning FPs beyond R ~2,000. The
third new technologies in BTFI is the use of EMCCDs for rapid and cyclically
wavelength scanning thus mitigating the damaging effect of atmospheric
variability through data acquisition. An additional important feature of the
instrument is that it has two optical channels which allow for the simultaneous
recording of the narrow-band, filtered image with the remaining (complementary)
broad-band light. This avoids the uncertainties inherent in tunable filter
imaging using a single detector. The system was designed to supply tunable
filter imaging with a field-of-view of 3 arcmin on a side, sampled at 0.12" for
direct Nasmyth seeing-limited area spectroscopy and for SAM's visitor
instrument port for GLAO-fed area spectroscopy. The instrument has seen first

Predictors of serum dioxin levels among adolescent boys in Chapaevsk, Russia: A cross-sectional pilot study
BACKGROUND: Toxicological studies and limited human studies have demonstrated associations between exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and adverse developmental and reproductive health effects. Given that children may be particularly susceptible to reproductive and developmental effects of organochlorines, and the paucity of information available regarding childhood exposures to dioxins in particular, we undertook a pilot study to describe the distribution of, and identify potential predictors of exposure to, dioxin-like compounds and dioxins among adolescent boys in Chapaevsk, Russia. The pilot study was also designed to guide the development of a large prospective cohort study on the relationship of exposure to PCDDs, PCDFs, and PCBs with growth and pubertal development in peri-pubertal Chapaevsk boys. METHODS: 221 boys age 14 to 17 participated in the pilot study. Each of the boys, with his mother, was asked to complete a nurse-administered detailed questionnaire on medical history, diet, and lifestyle. The diet questions were used to measure the current and lifetime consumption of locally grown or raised foods. Blood samples from 30 of these boys were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for analysis of dioxins, furans and PCBs. RESULTS: The median (25(th), 75(th )percentile) concentrations for total PCDDs, PCDFs and coplanar PCBs were 95.8 pg/g lipids (40.9, 144), 33.9 pg/g lipids (20.4, 61.8), and 120 pg/g lipids (77.6, 157), respectively. For WHO-TEQs, the median (25(th), 75(th )percentile) for total PCDDs, PCDFs, and coplanar PCBs were 0.29 (0.1, 9.14), 7.98 (5.27, 12.3), and 7.39 (4.51, 11.9), respectively. Although TCDD was largely non-detectable, two boys had high TCDD levels (17.9 and 21.7 pg/g lipid). Higher serum levels of sum of dioxin-like compounds and sum of dioxin TEQs were positively associated with increased age, consumption of fish, local meats other than chicken, PCB 118, and inversely with weeks of gestation. CONCLUSION: The total TEQs among Chapaevsk adolescents were higher than most values previously reported in non-occupationally exposed populations of comparable or even older ages. Dietary consumption of local foods, as well as age and weeks of gestation, predicted dioxin exposure in this population
J-PAS: Forecasts for dark matter - dark energy elastic couplings
We consider a cosmological model where dark matter and dark energy feature a
coupling that only affects their momentum transfer in the corresponding Euler
equations. We perform a fit to cosmological observables and confirm previous
findings within these scenarios that favour the presence of a coupling at more
than . This improvement is driven by the Sunyaev-Zeldovich data. We
subsequently perform a forecast for future J-PAS data and find that clustering
measurements will permit to clearly discern the presence of an interaction
within a few percent level with the uncoupled case at more than when
the complete survey, covering sq. deg., is considered. We found that the
inclusion of weak lensing measurements will not help to further constrain the
coupling parameter. For completeness, we compare to forecasts for DESI and

Dysphoric milk ejection reflex: A case report
Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER) is an abrupt emotional "drop" that occurs in some women just before milk release and continues for not more than a few minutes. The brief negative feelings range in severity from wistfulness to self-loathing, and appear to have a physiological cause. The authors suggest that an abrupt drop in dopamine may occur when milk release is triggered, resulting in a real or relative brief dopamine deficit for affected women. Clinicians can support women with D-MER in several ways; often, simply knowing that it is a recognized phenomenon makes the condition tolerable. Further study is needed
The miniJPAS survey quasar selection IV: Classification and redshift estimation with SQUEzE
We present a list of quasar candidates including photometric redshift
estimates from the miniJPAS Data Release constructed using SQUEzE. This work is
based on machine-learning classification of photometric data of quasar
candidates using SQUEzE. It has the advantage that its classification procedure
can be explained to some extent, making it less of a `black box' when compared
with other classifiers. Another key advantage is that using user-defined
metrics means the user has more control over the classification. While SQUEzE
was designed for spectroscopic data, here we adapt it for multi-band
photometric data, i.e. we treat multiple narrow-band filters as very
low-resolution spectra. We train our models using specialized mocks from
Queiroz et al. (2022). We estimate our redshift precision using the normalized
median absolute deviation, applied to our test sample. Our
test sample returns an score (effectively the purity and completeness) of
0.49 for quasars down to magnitude with and 0.24 for
quasars with . For high-z quasars, this goes up to 0.9 for . We
present two catalogues of quasar candidates including redshift estimates: 301
from point-like sources and 1049 when also including extended sources. We
discuss the impact of including extended sources in our predictions (they are
not included in the mocks), as well as the impact of changing the noise model
of the mocks. We also give an explanation of SQUEzE reasoning. Our estimates
for the redshift precision using the test sample indicate a

and 0.74\% for . Spectroscopic follow-up of the candidates is required

Lab Retriever: a software tool for calculating likelihood ratios incorporating a probability of drop-out for forensic DNA profiles
BACKGROUND: Technological advances have enabled the analysis of very small amounts of DNA in forensic cases. However, the DNA profiles from such evidence are frequently incomplete and can contain contributions from multiple individuals. The complexity of such samples confounds the assessment of the statistical weight of such evidence. One approach to account for this uncertainty is to use a likelihood ratio framework to compare the probability of the evidence profile under different scenarios. While researchers favor the likelihood ratio framework, few open-source software solutions with a graphical user interface implementing these calculations are available for practicing forensic scientists. RESULTS: To address this need, we developed Lab Retriever, an open-source, freely available program that forensic scientists can use to calculate likelihood ratios for complex DNA profiles. Lab Retriever adds a graphical user interface, written primarily in JavaScript, on top of a C++ implementation of the previously published R code of Balding. We redesigned parts of the original Balding algorithm to improve computational speed. In addition to incorporating a probability of allelic drop-out and other critical parameters, Lab Retriever computes likelihood ratios for hypotheses that can include up to four unknown contributors to a mixed sample. These computations are completed nearly instantaneously on a modern PC or Mac computer. CONCLUSIONS: Lab Retriever provides a practical software solution to forensic scientists who wish to assess the statistical weight of evidence for complex DNA profiles. Genetic Analysis of the Individual Contribution to Virulence of the Type III Effector Inventory of Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola
Several reports have recently contributed to determine the effector inventory of the sequenced strain Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola (Pph) 1448a. However, the contribution to virulence of most of these effectors remains to be established. Genetic analysis of the contribution to virulence of individual P. syringae effectors has been traditionally hindered by the lack of phenotypes of the corresponding knockout mutants, largely attributed to a high degree of functional redundancy within their effector inventories. In support of this notion, effectors from Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pto) DC3000 have been classified into redundant effector groups (REGs), analysing virulence of polymutants in the model plant Nicotiana benthamiana. However, using competitive index (CI) as a virulence assay, we were able to establish the individual contribution of AvrPto1PtoDC3000 to Pto DC3000 virulence in tomato, its natural host, even though typically, contribution to virulence of AvrPto1 is only shown in strains also lacking AvrPtoB (also called HopAB2), a member of its REG. This report raised the possibility that even effectors targeting the same defence signalling pathway may have an individual contribution to virulence, and pointed out to CI assays as the means to establish such a contribution for individual effectors. In this work, we have analysed the individual contribution to virulence of the majority of previously uncharacterised Pph 1448a effectors, by monitoring the development of disease symptoms and determining the CI of single knockout mutants at different stages of growth within bean, its natural host. Despite their potential functional redundancy, we have found individual contributions to virulence for six out of the fifteen effectors analysed. In addition, we have analysed the functional relationships between effectors displaying individual contribution to virulence, highlighting the diversity that these relationships may present, and the interest of analysing their functions within the context of the infection
