    Get PDF
This study explored whether pre-service teachers’ (PSTs’) lesson analysis skills during a teacher education course in the country of Turkey were related to their skills of lesson planning. PSTs’ lesson analysis skills during fieldwork were assessed by their attention to and interpretation of student thinking and learning, and how it is influenced by the teachers’ instructional decisions. The PSTs’ lesson analysis scores were significantly and positively correlated with scores in lesson planning task focusing on student thinking. The findings contribute to the literature on whether PSTs’ lesson analysis skills may be transferred to one of the core activities of teaching.WOS:000422904400008Scopus - Affiliation ID: 60105072Social Sciences Citation IndexQ3ArticleUluslararası işbirliği ile yapılmayan - HAYIRŞubat2018YÖK - 2017-1

Promoting active learning in mathematics teacher education: the Flipped classroom method and use of video content

    Get PDF
Teacher educators have a responsibility to help prospective teachers in their professional growth. It is important that teacher educators not only teach prospective teachers about benefits of active learning in student learning, but that they also prepare future teachers in using pedagogical methods aligned with active learning principles. This manuscript provides examples of how mathematics teacher educators can promote prospective teachers’ active learning and professional growth by bringing together the Flipped Classroom method with video content on teaching and learning as well as workplace learning opportunities in a pedagogy course. The professional learning of prospective teachers is framed accord- ing to the components of the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (Park & Olive, 2008; Shulman, 1986). Implications for future trends in teacher education are provided.WOS:000411471200017Scopus - Affiliation ID: 60105072Book Citation Index- Science - Book Citation Index- Social Sciences and HumanitiesArticle; Book ChapterOcak2017YÖK - 2016-1

    Get PDF

Teacher educators in k-12 classrooms: how to nurture professional development and research

    Get PDF
Four mathematics teacher educators taught 5th grade mathematics for one year at a disadvantaged public school in a metropolitan city in Turkey. Teacher educators (TE) met every week for 10 months where they discussed what to teach, how to teach and reflected on implementation of their shared planning (Regular Meetings). In some meetings, there was a special focus on teaching and learning of fractions (Fraction Research Meetings). Videotapes of the first six Regular Meetings and six of the Fraction Research Meetings were analyzed. The focus of qualitative analyses was on how the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) was constructed during meetings. References evidencing TEs' knowledge of students, instructional strategies and assessment were revealed more frequently during the Fraction Research Meetings compared to the Regular Meetings. Findings showed that TEs were more focused on what questions to ask in the classroom and shared their experiences about students' mathematical thinking more frequently. Framing planning and reflection discussions with a focus on conducting research was a productive way of nurturing professional development for TEs. Investigating Pedagogical Content Knowledge-in-Action

    Get PDF
Abstract: This paper investigates the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of a teacher educator who teaches 5th-grade mathematics in a school in the context of a university-school partnership project. PCK is analyzed in a qualitative way through video-taped classroom episodes with focus on interactions between the teacher and the students as well as the teacher’s reflections and pedagogical reasoning on the interactions. The analyses indicate examples of PCK development during teaching, especially refinement in the domain of knowledge of instructional strategies and representations. This knowledge improved as a result of reflection on student questioning and analysis of students’ misconceptions. Different roles of being teacher, teacher educator, and researcher afforded opportunities to gain insights on how to develop knowledge required for teaching and analyze it in order to facilitate future teachers’ learning

Enhancing prospective mathematics teachers’ noticing skills through online laboratory school activities

    Get PDF
This study investigated how prospective mathematics teachers’ (PMT) noticing skills, (i.e., attending, interpretation, and decision-making) were influenced through online laboratory school (OLS) activities. OLS provided PMTs opportunities for online fieldwork and work with students. The activities included lesson planning with peers under the supervision of academicians and experienced teachers, teaching, reflection and getting feedback. PMTs’ reflections on a video-taped lesson served as the pre-post assessment of the intervention. Quantitative analyses of data indicated PMTs showed statistically significant improvement in both interpretation and decision-making. Attending, on the other hand, was improved but not in a statistically significant way.Temmu

Investigating fifth-grade students’ conceptions of fractions on the number line

    Get PDF
In this study, clinical interviews focusing on students’ understanding of fractions as numbers on the number line were conducted with six fifth-grade students both before and after an intervention designed by teacher-researchers. Although in general students demonstrated improved understanding of fraction concepts even in situations requiring reversible thinking, difficulties in finding benchmarks on the number line and a limited awareness of density of fractions on the number line persisted among students

University-school partnership: a lens for school type differences in fractional knowledge

    Get PDF
This study will examine school type differences in fifth-grade students’ fractional knowledge using data from a university-school partnership. The participants will be a total of 203 students from a public school and a private school in two districts willing to collaborate in the University within School Project. International large-scale assessments generally show that private school students outperform public school students in mathematics, science, and reading (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD], 2009). While there is a strong theoretical impetus in the superiority of private schools, in more recent studies, after controlling for student and home background factors there appears to be little to no statistically significant school type differences in standardized test scores (OECD, 2013). In a related vein, Turkey had the largest variance internationally between schools in student performance: The overall achievement gap between the lower and higher achievers was large (OECD, 2007), and that this discrepancy was attributable to the between-school variation while controlling for family background and demographic characteristics (Alacacı & Erbaş, 2010)
