Floristic and vegetation changes on a small mediterranean island over the last century

A synthetic and updated overview about the vascular flora and vegetation of the Island of Capo Passero (SE‐Sicily) is provided. These data issue from two series of field surveys—the first carried out between 1997 and 2000, and the second between 2005 and 2019 and mostly focused on refining and implementing vegetation data. The current islet’s flora consists of 269 taxa, of which 149 (58%) are annual plants. The Mediterranean species are largely prevailing, 108 (40%) of which have a strictly Mediterranean biogeographical status. The comparison with a species list published in 1919 and updated in 1957 suggest that, despite the overall prevalence of anemochorous taxa, the vertebrate fauna represents an important vector for the plant colonization of the island, while the immigration of myrmechocorous taxa does not compensate the extinction rate. As many as 202 phy-tosociological relevés, 191 of which issue from original recent field surveys, enabled identifying 12 different plant communities. The comparison with a vegetation map published in 1965 suggests a strong reduction in dune habitats (2120 and 2210 according to EU ‘Habitats’ Directive 92/43), as well as a deep disruption in the succession typical of the local psammophilous vegetation series. In order to preserve rare, endangered and protected plant species (such as Aeluropus lagopoides, Cichorium spinosum, Limonium hyblaeum, L. syracusanum, Poterium spinosum, Senecio pygmaeus and Spergularia heldreichii) and to stop the ongoing habitat degradation, urgent and effective conservation measures should be adopted for this tiny, yet precious islet

Measles in Italy, July 2009 to September 2010.

Outbreaks of measles continue to occur in Italy, as in other European countries. We present here details of cases reported through the Italian enhanced measles surveillance system from July 2009 to September 2010. In total, 2,151 cases were reported, 42% (n=895) of which were laboratory confirmed. The median age of cases was 18 years and 1,709 of 1,856 cases (92%) were unvaccinated. Many cases with complications were reported (n=305), including three with encephalitis. A total of 652 of 1,822 cases (36%) were hospitalised. Molecular characterisation revealed circulation of a limited number of measles virus genotypes (D4, D8 and B3), which is consistent with the current epidemiology of the disease in Italy. A national measles elimination plan was approved in 2003 with the aim of interrupting endemic measles transmission by 2007. Since elimination was not achieved, the target date was recently moved to 2015. The emphasis of the new elimination plan, approved in March 2011, is on strengthening surveillance, implementing evidence based-interventions to increase measles-mumps-rubella vaccine uptake in children, adolescents and young adults, and implementing communication activities related to the vaccine. The strategies proposed by the plan should be implemented fully and appropriately by all regions in order to meet the elimination goal by 2015

The present paper is made up of a first part where some preliminary reflections are made about the typologies of the concept of development, delving into the study of its definition and its characteristics. Likewise, a differentiation is made in relation to the concept of growth and economic development is characterized. In particular, the relationship between development and poverty is addressed. Subsequently, the different adjectives that are added to the concept of development are presented: economic, sustainable, sustainable, local, social, social and endogenous development. It seeks to contextualize development based on the analysis of the role of the State in development, both at the national, provincial and local levels. In particular, an analysis is made of the current development situation in the national and provincial context. To finish, an attempt will be made to reach conclusions on the concept of development, its scope, typologies and adjectives, establishing a position on it in the context of the Province of Buenos Aires, to deepen and reflect on finding new ideas for development.Universidad Nacional de La Plat

R&D project for neutrinoless double beta decay in Borexino

    Get PDF
Since the proposal of the Borexino project in the early nineties, the idea to perform a neutrinoless double beta decay experiment with 136Xe dissolved in the scintillator was considered. The beautiful results obtained by the Borexino experiment, which achieved a purity far exceeding design goals, and a new concept for dissolving large quantities of xenon in the scintillator by increasing its pressure make this possibility even more interesting for a new-generation experiment in the next decade. We present the ongoing R&D studies to look for neutrinoless double beta decay using liquid scintillators, discussing the optical properties of the Borexino scintillator when xenon is dissolved in large quantity and with high pressure
